Pandora's Box Arcade SuperGun Button and Joystick Upgrades

This instructable will show how to upgrade a Pandora's Box 4S/4X/etc arcade console SuperGun system with better quality Sanwa pushbuttons and joystick. This type of arcade system usually has lot of games built into a metal enclosure with arcade controls. You then plug it into a TV or monitor with HDMI/VGA inputs.

You can view a video of the process on this Youtube video

Step 1: Sanwa Push Buttons

The stock buttons on most Pandora's Box arcade superguns are 30mm Sanwa clones. You can use Sanwa OSBF-30 or OSBN-30 pushbuttons. OSBF-30 are the snap in type, while OSBN-30 are screw ins. Both will work but OSBF-30 are probably more ideal.

Step 2: Sanwa JLF Joystick

The stock arcade stick is also a Sanwa clone but you it can easily be replaced with a real Sanwa JLF-TP-8YT. The stock joystick has a round restrictor plate but square plates are probably more common. There are also octogon gates available separately. Depending on the type of game you play, you can customize it even more.

Step 3: Remove Stock Joystick

Most Sanwa joysticks are connected to the harness with a 5pin connect, unplug it.

You must also remove the ball top by using a screw driver to hold the shaft from spinning as you unscrew the red ball top.

Then you can unscrew the 6 screws holding the base plate in place.

Step 4: Install Real Sanwa JLF Joystick

Screw the new Sanwa JLF in place

Step 5: Replace Push Buttons

Unplug the 2 wires connected to the buttons

Use a flathead screwdriver to push the tabs that hold the buttons in place

Put in new buttons and connect the 2 wires

Step 6: Finish

The buttons and joystick are new replaced with official Sanwa ones which will make them feel a lot better than stock.

Question 2 months ago on Step 6

I bought the Pandora's 6 model. The joystick has some annoying lags (i.e. when playing pacman or Mortal Combat maneuvers), will replacing with Sanwa improve this? or is the lag a software issue?

I doubt new buttons will fix it. It could be a couple of things. First off, your TV, especially the smart LCD TV's have lag. See if there is a "game" mode for you TV. Also the newer pandora's and clones are not well made as the earlier ones. Prices of the new ones have dropped a lot but quality also went down. I still use the 4S for this reason.

Great mod! Do you know what should I do in case I'd like to embed a Raspberry Pi 3 inside? Mainly related to wiring, etc. Thanks

Do you really need to install the RPi inside? I mean is it more for aesthetics. My understanding is that one the USB ports in the back of the Pandora's box can act like an input for the Pi so you could run it from the Pandora as a joystick input. Is this incorrect?

Do you know if the existing gate is switchable from 8 to 4 way? The upgrade makes even more sense if not. Also, can the PB be used as an external usb ontroller then for PCs? Thanks!
