Introduction: Peace Love Joy
Peace Love Joy ornament of children lifting a bell on a snowflake is how I captured the magic of the holidays. The spirit of the bell, words and acts of love by the children, and the magical snowflake of hexagons; no one snow flake is alike. Under a microscope they are truly amazing and a lot of fun to create using CAD.
This ornament was designed for The White House 3D Printed Ornament Design Challenge.
Software: Matrix / Gemvision
Step 1: I first created the snowflake using hexagons and creating various shapes. Then extruded and boolean.
Step 2: I drew the silhouette of my kids holding a ball. Then extruded.
Step 3: I created the bell using a circle, rail revolve, projected curves, words, etc. Thicken the surface, cut the projected curves and finished. A little cylinder should be inserted that is also printed.
Step 4: Booleon all shapes
Step 5: Rendered for silver bell, gold plated children and a silver snowflake.

Step 2: Step 1: Inspiration and Thought Process
The challenge was to create a winter holiday-inspired ornament.
The first things that came to mind were snow, children and the spirit of the holiday.
Step 1: Decided on a snowflake. Did research.
I took a deeper look into snow by going on the NASA website and searching for real photos of snowflakes under a microscope, and I learned a lot. In addition to learning about the shapes and beauty of the flake, I learned how math is involved and how NASA has a spacemath site for kids. Pretty cool!!
So I started with one hexagon and another and another, until I loved the image. I tried to keep the module of the snowflake in mind and how it transforms as it falls from the sky. I was going to bling it out with diamonds or crystals for the shimmering effect of the snow, but I didn't know if that was overboard for the competition. I may still do it.
Doing the research on the snowflake and on the NASA site has inspired me to do other research for near future designs.
Step 3: Children
When I thought of children, I thought of how their pure joy, love, peace and hope is needed and celebrated especially during the holidays.
1) I took a picture of my kids lifting up a ball. I wanted children lifting joy, love, peace and hope.
2) In a view menu, I added their photo with Picture Frame and traced them with curves.
3) Extruded the curves to make a solid. Since it's a silhouette to reflect all boys and girls, I didn't add complicated designs. I wanted to show their simple form.
4) After the snowflake was complete (following a 3x3x3in parameter) I revolved the children on the snowflake for balance of weight and to give it extra depth and dimension.
Step 4: Bell
I wanted the children to hold or lift something. One of my all time favorite children's movie is The Polar Express. I love how it's important to believe have hope. At the end of the story, the children and the boy in particular, cherished the bell because it helped him hold on to hope and believe. That's why I was sure lifting a bell would be perfect.
1) Created a circle with curve
2) Rail revolved curve for a surface
3) Created curves on a surface for the design of the openings
4) Projected the curves
5) Deleted the surface inside the curves
6) Created a curve for the hook
7) created a profile for the ends
8) Profile sweep
9) Boolean the entire bell
Step 5: Putting It Together
When I did the rendering, I first did them unbooleaned. They were 3 separate models. After the rendering, I did a boolean union for all of the models so one model can be grown.
Here you have it, children lifting peace, love and joy to the world. They have hope:-)
