Have all your ingredients ready!
In this pie filling recipe you will need:
3/4 cup of brown sugar
1/4 cup of flour
3/4 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
7 fairly large apples (Spartans were used for this recipe)
juice of one lemon (1/4 cup)
Later on you’ll need:
4 teaspoons of confectioners sugar
4 colours of food dye.
And a pie crust of your choosing!
Slice the apples in half, peel and remove their cores. When removing apple cores it is best to use a melon baller, however, you can you a dull knife or paring knife. (NOTE: Get parents to help you when using a knife or hot oven)
Add the lemon juice to the apples. (NOTE: Adding lemon juice to the apples will stop them from turning brown, even if it doesn’t matter for this recipe. Now it is just used for flavour!)
In a separate container, add together the sugar, cinnamon, and flour. Mix thoroughly until there are no clumps.
Add the sugar mix to the apples. Toss until the apples are coated.
(NOTE: this is only an option, however I like to mix a little cinnamon with white sugar to coat the bottom of the pie crust.)
Lay the apple slices around the edge of your chosen pie crust slightly overlapping each other. Do the same in the middle. Add three or four layers depending on the size of your crust.
Place a mound of dough on a flat surface and roll it out until it fits the circumference of your pie tin. (NOTE: circumference is the perimeter of a circle.) Remove the edges of the dough until it makes a nice circle. Place the dough on the pie and crimp down the edges with a fork.
Take extra dough and roll out into an oval. Measure the radius of your pie and use this information to create a triangle out of pie dough. (NOTE: a radius of a circle is half the diameter.) Then place the triangle on top of the pie. Repeat the step 2 but make the triangle slimmer.
Place in each of 4 different cups, a tablespoon of confectioners sugar with three or four drops of food die, and a teaspoon of water. Mix these together until they turn into a thick paint. Paint the colours of the triangles with a brush or knife as shown in pictures.
Again take the scraps of extra dough. This time we will bring you back to your childhood of when rolling play-dough was fun. Roll out two, two inch pieces of dough and one, three inch piece. Flatten the two inch pieces to be the legs of your pi symbol. Roll out your three inch piece and curl the ends. Curl the left side up and right side down, then flatten with your fingers for the top of your pi symbol. Place on pie.
When in the oven the pie will get hot and generate some steam. (NOTE: generate means to make or create.) The steam has to leave the pie so we must poke clever holes in the top so that the pie can breathe. As shown in the picture I poked 3.14 with my fork
Set the oven for 450 degrees F and 230 C. When done preheating, put the pie in the oven for 45 minutes or less.
Step 7... EAT!
