Introduction: Plastic Bag Yarn

Give plastic bags a new life! Using Plastic Bag Yarn, you can create woven shopping bags, pouches, and belts. You can also knit and crochet with it.

Supplies

  1. Plastic bags
  2. Scissors

Step 1: Preparing the Bag

Flatten and smooth out a plastic bag. Then trim the bottom seam off. Now the bag should be a tube.

Step 2: Folding the Bag

Lay the bag on a flat surface and smooth out the wrinkles with your hands. With the side of the bag facing you (open ends at either Side), fold the side closest to you over about one inch, smooth it down with your fingers, and fold the folded side over again. Keep smoothing and folding over at one inch increments until you have folded the bag into a long flat roll.

Step 3: Cutting the Loops

Cut this folded plastic bag strip into roughly one inch pieces. Then unfold each piece; this creates loops.

Step 4: Making the Yarn

For clarity, I'm using two different colored plastic bag loops. Take the yellow loop and thread it through the blue. Then pull one end of the yellow through the other end of the yellow. Now pull the knot tight. Continue tying the loops together. Always thread the new loop through the last loop on the chain.

Step 5: Be Creative!

Have fun using up those old plastic bags and turning them into knitted and woven treasures!
