Introduction: Popsicle Cat Bed and Scratcher

popsicle cat bed and scratcher

Is your furry friend melting because of the summer temperatures? make him this pawsome popsicle cat bed. The bed can also be used as a scratcher and the cover is washable. Your cat will be forever grateful (or at least a few minutes until he wants to be fed).

The popsicle consists of a wooden frame and a fleece cover/pillow. Which can be taken apart.

Materials needed:

- multiplex board 800*350*10mm

- sisal rope approx 6 m and 8 mm thick

- reinforced sewing thread

- fleece red, orange and yellow approx 0,5 square meter per colour

- white cotton fabric 0,5*1 meter

- orange sewing thread

- pillow filling

Tools needed

- laser cutter to make the wooden frame (if you don’t have access to a laser cutter you could also use a jigsaw)

- drill

- sewing machine

- scissors

Step 1: Step 1: Making the Wooden Frame

This wooden frame holds the stick of the popsicle (scratching board) in place. It is placed inside a pocket in the cover, this way you only see the stick in the end result. The frame can be removed from the cover so it can be washed.

The frame was lasercut using the added dxf file. If you don’t have access to a laser cutter you could also use a jigsaw to cut the shape.

Step 2: Step 2: Wrapping the Rope

Before you start wrapping the rope around the stick you sould drill 4 small holes on the top and bottom part of the stick. After this you wrap the rope around the stick, make sure it's as tight as possible. The reinforced sewing thread loops through the small holes to attach the sisal rope as shown in the picture. Then cut of the excess pieces of rope.

Step 3: Step 3: Making the Cover

Cut the fabric according to the drawing. The outer cover is made of fleece and the inner one is made of white cotton. Sew the covers separately then attach the bottom parts to the outer cover. After this attach the inner cover to the bottom parts. Make sure you leave a part open so you can fill the cover with pillow filling. after you have filled it and sewn it shut you’re done.
