Power a 12V WiFi DSL Router From a PC Power Supply Unit

Do you know what is the worst scenario could internet addicts had ?!

No internet access.

Today I will show you how to power a 12v WiFi DSL Router from a PC power supply unit.

I tried it with a friend and it worked fine.

It was an emergency solution, and we did not pay for another AC adapter, we just used the old cable from the damaged AC adapter.

The AC Adapter out put was: 12V DC , 500 mA.

Step 1: What Do You Need ?

• The old AC adapter cable.

• Molex to SATA connector.

• Cutting tool.

• Duct tape.

• Lighter (optional).

• Soldering iron and solder (optional).

Step 3: Cutting and Soldering the Wires

Cut of the cable from the AC adapter and strip the end.

Cut the wires of the Molex connector, put the SATA connector away.

Strip one black wire and the yellow wire and remove the other two.

Black wire = GND.

Yellow wire = 12V DC.

Solder the wires:

The positive with the yellow wire

The negative with the Black wire

Step 4: Covering the Wires

Cover the soldered areas with a duct tape and apply heat with the lighter.

Step 5: Plug in the Cable

Turn of your computer.

Disconnect your PC from the wall outlet.

Open the case.

Plug in the new cable.

Close the case.

Turn on the PC.

Before you try to plug the connector to the router, you can measure the current and the voltage coming out from the PC PSU with a multimeter.

Now you are ready to be online again.
