Introduction: Quickly and Easily Remove Fishing Line From a Spinning Reel Spool

About: I enjoy fishing, kayaking, woodworking and making a wide variety of things.

Here is a fast and easy way to remove line from a spinning reel spool. I can remove line much faster this way than I could by pulling it off of the spool by hand. I have embedded my YouTube video in this instuctable if you would like to view that. Step 1: Materials

You will need a spinning reel spool that needs the line removed, a knife, an electric screwdriver or drill with a screwdriver bit, scissors, a piece of foam block (or whatever material you want to use to wind the old line onto) and a screwdriver that has a shaft small enough in diameter to fit inside your spinning reel spool loosely.

Step 2: Making the Foam Despooling Block

I used a piece of foam block to spool the old line onto. You may choose to use something else. I used the foam block because I already had it on hand and it seemed like it would be a good material for the project. To get the foam block ready to use was very simple. First you need to cut a notch in the block with a knife. The notch will hold the end of the line on the block while it spins on the drill bit. Next you need to press the screwdriver bit into the end of the foam block like I did in the pictures. Now you are ready to remove the old line from your spool!

Step 3: Removing the Old Fishing Line

Now, just pull the end of the old fishing line into the notch you cut in the foam block in the previous step. I used a screwdriver that has a shaft diameter small enough to allow the spool to spin freely to hold the spool while I removed the line from the spool. Holding the screwdriver/spool in one hand, use the other hand to operate the electric drill/screwdriver and spool all of the old line onto the foam block. After you have the old line on the block, slide your scissors underneath the fishing line and cut it off the foam block. I store all of my old monofilament in a large ziplock bag that I take into a local sporting goods store for recycling periodically.

Step 4: You Are Done!

That is an easy project that will really save you some time and hassle. I hope you enjoyed this Instructable and found it useful. Happy fishing!
