Rpi Router. THIS NO LONGER WORKS. I'm Working on a Solution.

Raspberry Pi.
Cut the cord, take your Web contrllolled project with you everywhere you go.
There are many Raspberry pi projects like the web-controlled robot, or webcam server. These require a connection to your home wifi meaning you are restricted to a small distance. If you make the Rpi a wireless router then you could go anywhere with your robot or webcam and be connected all in one unit. Or you can just SSH to your Rpi project and work on your code while at school or work. Your Rpi can be a robot and router at the same time.

You could do all this with a simple shell script and a wifi adapter.

Note; This setup will not provide an internet connection. This was tested with Wheezy but could work with Jessie.

Step 1: Parts Needed

1. Raspberry Pi

2. WIFI adapter compatible with RTL8188cu driver

3. Battery for the Rpi

I will not explain how to install raspian or setup the Rpi, for this you should know how to SSH from your computer.

Step 2: Download the Script

First make sure the wifi adapter is compatible. Open the terminal and type;

This should tell you which driver is being used.

Connect your Rpi to the internet to download and run the script. This script was written by

http://blog.sip2serve.com/post/48420162196/howto-s... and modified by me.

sudo mkdir myfiles

cd myfiles

wget https://www.dropbox.com/s/c5079qa0o33gatg/inst-RTL8188-Rpi.sh

sudo chown root:root inst-RTL8188-Rpi.sh

sudo chmod 755 inst-RTL8188-Rpi.sh

sudo ./inst-RTL8188-Rpi.sh

The script will install the required files and change your wireless ip to static and ethernet ip to static unless you entered something else during the installation. The new wifi network is Raspi and the password is raspberry. If you wish to change these type;

sudo nano /etc/network/interfaces and edit the file.

That's it folks..

    I wonder why your script replace the /usr/sbin/hostapd by downloading a new version from your dropbox account ? Is it really secure ?

    Can you explain your approach ?

    the hostapd was modified to work with the RTL8188cu driver. The original Hostapd was not compatible. Since the latest Jessie upgrade they have made hostapd to be compatible, and no custom hostapd is needed. the link to download hostapad is not mine.

    Thanks GranPI2 for your reply.

    I think it was not a good idea to load a system file from a link such as this one. Doing this opens the door to a simple hacking the operating system. Suggest recompiling hostapd by modifying the configuration is much more reasonable. Nevertheless, thank you for sharing your work.

    I have a bespoke raspberry build on a pi3 for acting as the flight controller in a drone and was wondering if this will work onthe the pi3 with it's built in wifi?

    I don't have RPi3 to test it. But this no longer works after the latest upgrade. I'm looking for a solution.
