A rag rug is a good option for a Project. This is because it is an original idea that not many people would think of. It can be made out of any old fabrics. The fashion industry is one of the most wasteful industries in the world so it would be a good way to counter this. Many old clothes are just thrown out and sent to landfill when they could be reused to make something like this. This means that this Project is both easy to make, fun and serves a purpose by created a less wasteful world.

Supplies

What you will need:

Old clothes or fabrics
A sewing needle
Thread

Skills/Knowledge:

You will need to know how to plait
You will need to know how to hand sew
You will need to be able to rip strips of fabric

Hand Sewing: A brief explanation of starting off hand sewing:

To start off hand sewing, you will need to thread the needle. You cut the amount of thread needing and thread one end through the eye of the needle.
Next, poke the needle through the layers of fabric but do not bring through the ends of the fabric. Sew on the spot by placing the needle through the same spot in the fabric two-three times.

Step 1: Begining the Rug

To begin off the rug, you will need to rip three strips of fabric. Ideally, these will be three different colours.
You will need to sew these fabrics together at the top of the three strips by hand sewing.
After that, you can begin to plait the three strips together. Continue plaiting until one or more of the strips is too short to continue. Proceed to Step 2.

Step 2: Adding More Fabrics

Firstly, when the strip of fabric you are plaiting runs out, you will need to prepare another strip of fabric. This can be the same colour, or you can use a different colour if you want to make it a more colourful rug.
After you have got another strip of fabric you will use to add on, you will need to thread your sewing needle. Do this by putting the lengths of thread through the eye of the needle.
Then, you will need to hand sew the new piece of fabric onto the one that has run out.
After that, you can continue to plait like you were before.
Repeat this process as many times as necessary. Then Proceed to Step 3.

Step 3: Beginning to Sew the Circle

Once your plait has become quite lengthy, you can start to sew the circle of the rug. Note: This does not mean you can't plait any more to make it longer. In fact, you will need to continue plaiting to make the rug bigger.
You will need to thread your needle again. For this, you will need a lot of thread. Thread the needle until you have both sides equal. I have been using a double thread technique. This means that there are two lot's of thread holding it together. I just find it supports the weight of the fabric better.
It does take a while to sew the rug, especially if you aren't familiar with hand sewing so just take your time.
