Introduction: Relief Editing

Now that we know how to create reliefs in ArtCAM Premium, we will not take a glance at editing our reliefs in ArtCAM.

Note: All files can be found at the bottom of each lesson. Feel free to save the files to your own directory.

Step 3: Texture From Image Tutorial

  • Open Model - stone_pattern.png
    • Width = 12”

  • Select the stone_pattern Bitmap Layers in the Project Tree
  • Create Relief Layer (from bitmap layers)
    • New Height = 0.15”
  • Smooth Relief - 20%

Next you are ready to save your new texture by into your clipart folder

  • Open Relief Clipart Library
    • Chose to view the Custom Reliefs clipart folder
    • Using your left mouse button select in your project tree, stone pattern Relief Layer you have just created
    • And drag into the Relief Clipart Library

Step 4: Relief Layer Badge Tutorial

  • Open Relief Layer Badge.art
  • Expand Front Relief Layers and Hide All
  • Show each Relief Layer separately
  • Turn on each Relief Layer, showing how it embosses the other reliefs
  • Toggle on Base layerand HideFlower3 Relief Layer
  • Activate ArtCAMthen create a New Relief Layer, renamed Symbol
  • Open Paste Relief From A File - MedicalSymbol.rlf
    • If model selected from training Data files, no changes required, if opened from Relief Clipart, will need to move and re-size it.
    • Paste

  • New Relief Layer and rename to Banner
  • Relief Clipart Library
    • Banners - Banner1
  • Transform - F9, Scale of 50% all linked
    • Alt drag down
    • More Options page
    • Height = 0.1” , Paste
  • Banner Relief Combine mode = Merge High

Step 5: Grapevine Tutorial

  • Open Grape-Vine.art
  • Toggle Vector Visibility on
  • Vector Layer = Leaf and Construction
  • Relief Layer = 3D Leaf
  • Extrude
    • Drive Curve = diagonal line – use as a centreline
    • Cross Section = bottom curved profile – invert curve in Z
    • Z Modulation = 2nd from bottom curve
    • Apply, Cancel

  • Select leaf vector - Zero Outside Vector
  • Shape Editor – Select leaf vector
    • Add (Round -5º, Start Height=1mm (.05”)
    • Apply
  • Select leaf veins
  • Add (Round -25º, Start Height =-0.5 mm (-0.02”))
  • Apply, Cancel
  • Vector Layer = Vines
  • Relief Layer = 3D Vine
  • Shape Editor – Merge and Apply each vine
  • Sculpting – smooth crease where branches meet main vine
    • Smooth, Mask Material Safety Plane 0.25 mm (0.01”)
  • Vector Layer = Grapes
  • Relief Layer = 3D Grapes
  • Shape Editor – Merge and Apply each set of grapes

Step 6: Eagle Tutorial

  • New Model
    • 300mm (12”) x 300mm (12”)
    • Res 2500 x 2500
  • Relief Clipart - Eagle Head & Body - F9 & Paste
  • Drag & drop in clipart Foot
    • Width = 40mm (1.5”) (lock x & y)
    • Rotate 10° anti-clockwise
    • Unlink Z Range = 2mm (0.08”)
  • Mirror foot – across model
  • Rotated right foot (mirrored) 15° anti-clockwise
  • Paste feet
  • Drag & drop in clipartWing Top - rotate 10° clockwise
  • Polyline (Smooth) through centre of Wing Top
  • Drag & drop in clipartFeather3
    • Width = 15mm (0.625”)
    • Z Range = 2mm (0.08”)
  • Paste Along a Curve - Feather & select Polyline = 25 copies
  • Move feathers down , ungroup
  • Transform 2 end feathers
    • Rotate each clockwise (rotation at top)
  • Move & rotate mid feathers
  • Group feathers
  • Transform feathers - Ctrl & resize Width = 350mm (13.75”)
  • Move copied feathers 1/3 down& aligned on left
    • Z Range = 1mm (0.04”)
  • Ungroup bottom feathers
  • Move 4 right end feathers over left foot
    • Rotate 20° clockwise
    • Rotate end feather anti-clockwise a little§
    • Z Range for all 4 = 0.7mm (0.03”)
  • Mirror clipart – across model
  • Copy and fill in tail feathers
  • Cookie cutter - free up body
  • Resize all to fit
  • Paste down relief
  • Delete vectors

Now we will perform our first distortion by distorting the entire eagle.

  • Cookie cutter – entire relief
  • Envelope Distortion
    • Move both top control points vertically up
    • Move bottom left and right nodes inwards
  • Centre and paste down
  • Undo all until whole eagle was free before distortion
    • Or (Eagle Before Distortion.rlf clipart )
  • Centre and paste down

Now let's distort the eagle's wings

  • Polyline around right wing
  • Cookie cutter – wing
  • Delete vector
  • Envelope Distortion
    • Move right control point angled up 45°
    • Move bottom right node inwards till control points touch
    • Move top right node down & over to right
    • Move top left control point upwards
  • Polyline around left wing
  • Cookie cutter left wing and delete
  • Mirror right wing - across model
  • Select both wings and paste down
