Replica Frank Lloyd Wright Taliesin 2 Inspired Floor Lamp

In this Instructables, we will be creating a replica Frank Lloyd Wright Taliesin 2 Floor Lamp. The lamp has been scaled down numerous times and had design cuts in order to meet the strict wood resource constraint.

Step 1: Step 1: Buying Wood

At your local hardware store, purchase 2* (2x4x8) wooden boards. 2x4x8ft long.

Step 2: Step 2: Sketching and Cutting the Base

Using one of your boards, measure off 3 sections each stretching 10 in. in length. These will be your 3x 10 in. plates that will be assembled together using wood glue and wood putty. Using clamps, attach the base together and let dry for 24 hours.

Step 3: Step 3: Measuring and Cutting the Spine of the Lamp

The spine / tall rod that holds the lighting enclosed box housing measures 35" in length, and is 1.5"x1.5". We achieved this cut by using a planar to plane off the top face of our 35" board down to only 1.5" in thickness. We then cut it in half to achieve the 1.5" by 1.5" square spine. Attaching the spine closer to one quadrant of the base is recommended due to the boxes and their orientation, however it is ultimately up to you.

To ensure extra support, we have added (2 in total) 4"x3"x1.5" thick wooden blocks to support the spine as it is additional support connecting the spine to the base.

Step 4: Step 4: Measuring and Cutting Boxes for Lighting

Each box has 2 sides, 1 back piece, and 1 top. The sides of the boxes are 7"x3.5"x1" thick. The sides of the boxes have a cutout originating 0.5" from the top and bottom, cutting out 3"x2" box. Do this for all sides (8 in total).

The back plates of the boxes (4 in total) measure 3.5"x3.5"x0.50" thick. The boxes are now ready for assembly using wood glue, or nails to ensure a strong grip.

Additionally, you will need the tops for the boxes (4 in total) measuring 7 3/8"x3.5"x0.50" thick. These tops have a cutout at one end of the rectangle, 1" from each side and measuring 1.5" in depth and width. This will be the square to fit around the spine. The tops of the boxes should be spaced out a relative distance from each other.

Step 5: Step 6: Box Support Pieces

These pieces (8 in total) are attached one on each side (3.5"x2"x1" thick) of the spine of the lamp to ensure resting for the 2 sides of the boxes to rest on. The pieces have a cutout of 1"x"0.75" at the top and bottom of either side for the edges of the boxes to fit in / rest on, providing additional support.

Step 6: Step 7: Adding the Finishing Touches

Once you have your final lamp assembled, using wood putty, wood glue, and sand paper, finalize the finishing touches on your design. Filling in all crevices, gaps, and covering all visible nails to ultimately upgrade the visual appeal of your lamp. Finally, to add the finishing touch to your lamp, you can either paint, stain, or burn your lamp to achieve the color you desire. We used a blow torch to lightly char our lamp to give it a more older and traditional appeal.
