Make an affordable version of the popular Sputnik Sculpture for your home.

Step 1: What You'll Need

  • 1” to 2.5” smooth foam ball
  • Gold craft paint (Folk Art brand, No. 580 Taupe)
  • 1 - 2 packs of bamboo skewers
  • E6000 glue
  • Plier snips
  • Pencil
  • Preval Sprayer

Note: Our sculpture was made with a 2.5" foam ball. The finished product is the perfect size to hang from the ceiling as an art piece, but it's too large to easily display a shelf. If you'd prefer a smaller sculpture, use the 1" foam ball.

Step 2: Skewer Length and Uniformity

Skewer the foam ball with one stick to determine how long you want the spikes to be. Remove the skewer and cut it. Snip the rest of the skewers to the same length, using a pencil to mark where to cut.

Step 3: Reinforce the Spikes

Next, roll the end of a skewer in E6000 glue and stick it into the foam. Repeat the process until your sculpture is as full as you'd like.

Step 4: Prepare the Preval Sprayer

Our paint was watery, so we added 1.5 oz. of craft paint and 1.5 oz. of water to the jar. If your paint is thicker, pour 1.5 oz. of paint and 2 oz. of water.

Cap, shake and attach the spray can.

Step 5: Spray the Sculpture

Spray the sculpture, taking care to paint it at all angles. Let it dry between coats.
