Summer Stylish Dress Using a T-shirt for the Pattern

About: I am married with two children. Spring, summer, and fall are my very favorite times of the year. I enjoy working in the yard, sewing, cooking, quilting, gardening, and creating. I do this to keep my sanity.
I've been blessed to have my son and daughter in law visiting me this week.  My daughter-in-law, being quite the girly girl and fashionably sensitive, was wearing a very adorable designer t-shirt she bought.  After looking at the simplicity of the design I decided to make her a dress using this shirt as the pattern.  This dress turned out incredibly cute and surprisingly easy to make.  I have never really enjoyed sewing with knits but I must say that after making this dress I have a new appreciation for making clothes with these kinds of fabrics.  It makes sewing a dream!

Step 1: Supplies

1 1/2 Yards knit fabric
Favorite t-shirt for the pattern
Matching thread
Yard stick
Sewing machine
Sewing pins

Step 2: Cut Out the Shirt

Cut out the front and back pieces of the shirt.

Step 3: Cut Out the Bottom Section of the Dress

Cut 2 pieces 13 X 17 inches this will be the dress bottom.

Step 4: Pinning the Dress Bottom

With right sides together pin one dress bottom to the shirt  front.
With right sides together pin the remaining dress bottom to the shirt back.

Step 5: Sew the Dress Bottom

Sew the dress bottom to the shirt front.
Sew the dress bottom to the shirt back.
Pin the dress front to the dress back as shown.

Step 6: Sew the Dress

Sew the dress front to the dress back at the sides and shoulders.

Step 7: Neck, Sleeve, and Hem

Pin the hem in,  for the neck, sleeve, and bottom using 1/4 inch double hem.
Sew the neck, sleeves, and bottom hem.
Turn right side out.

Step 8: Sunshiine's Final Thoughts

I will be looking for more opportunities to create new clothes using knits and designer shirts for patterns.  We had an incredible experience creating this stylish dress and I am eager to surprise her with another before she leaves.

In closing I would like to thank  our instructables company, sponsors,  authors, readers, and members, for making this community a great success!  Many hours of time and hard work has been put into making this place the best DIY on the Internet. Have a splendorous day!

Thanks! She owns the store LOL but does not want to reveal her secret where she bought the shirt. That store has so many clothes that look fabulous on her! Thanks for commenting! Have a great day!
