Introduction: Teaching Music, a MUSIC SHEET That Actually SOUNDS!

About: I am a passionate industrial designer that loves to create all kind of things. I also studied some semesters of Robotics at the university. I love learning and teaching as well. If you have any questions a...

I was thinking about music education, reading music sheets and how difficult it was for me to learn this, so I decided I should make something that would make learning much easier for children. I started studying what could be the biggest problem on this topic and I found that when we read "do" "re" "mi" notes, the sounds we make with our mouths don't really match the sounds of an instrument, we learn to read something with words when we really should understand the sounds. This is why I decided to create with Makey Makey music sheets that sound, so when learning to read them the children also understand how those notes sound.

Step 1: Find a Song

1. Find a song (the music sheet) to reproduce and print it (x2), in my case I use the Song of Joy. (The 5 marks that I left in the upper left correspond to the 5 notes that this melody has and where we will grab the cables of the makey makey)

Step 2: Cutting

2. Cut each circle of each note on one sheet.

Step 3: Metallic Tape

3. On the other sheet tape thin pieces of metallic tape and when you need to pass one over the other, you can put masking tape to make some kind of bridge.

Try to connect all the notes.

Step 4: My Example

4. Actually in doing so it didn´t get as orderly as I expected it to be, I hope you do much better in this part.

Step 5: Gluing

5. Both cards are glued together.

5. Se pegan ambas cartulinas.

Step 6: Makey Makey

6. Now connect to the Makey Makey (taking into account the notes)

Step 7: Play It

7. Play it by touching it (And with the other hand touching the ground on the Makey makey)

Question 22 days ago on Step 3

Hola Lina María, have you tried using magnetic paint on the back of the sheet music 🎶 instead of cutting out the notes?

how would it work? ... I would need to add like small circles on the notes (on the front of the sheet) for them to get "connected" to the magnetic paint?
I just googled magnetic paint because I didn´t know about it... it sounds really interesting for many projects :D
    Thank you :)

The way I would try it is that I would paint dots where the notes are on the front of one sheet of music and on the back of another music sheet and use those dots as your contact with the rest of the circuit...sort of like a press/sandwich switch? I have to stay home a while like a lot of teachers so I’d like to give it a try 😊
