Introduction: Trunk Filing Cabinet
Turn a trunk into a filing cabinet
Step 1: Materials
First you need a trunk to turn into your new filing cabinet. Once you have that you will need the following.
1 x file frame (make sure it fits in your trunk)
4 x table legs (I went with small ones for just a bit of elevation)
4 x top plates (these screw into the bottom of the trunk to attach the legs to)
Drill w/screwdriver bit
Paint or stain to color the legs
Step 2: Attach the Plates
Using the included screws, attach the plates to the bottom of the trunk evenly spaced in the four corners. I did not need to measure as they fit right up next to the metal at the corners of my trunk.
Note: The screws that came with my plates were a tad long and poked through the inside bottom of the trunk. This didn't bother me, but if it is an issue for you, make sure to take this into consideration.
Step 3: Attach the Legs
Just screw the legs into the plate. I didn't like the natural look so I decided to spray paint them for the final product.
Note: If you plan on painting them, ensure they are not in the trunk. A method that worked for me was to drill holes into scrap wood, then screw the legs in and paint.
Step 4: Assemble the File Frame
Put together your file frame and put it into the trunk. Once the files are put in, the frame should relatively stay put. If it moves around too much you can hold it in place with a metal bracket or my favorite Sugru.
Step 5: Done!
Step back and admire your handy work! Now where are those files...
