During the warm Spring and Summer months, tons of fresh veggies are available at our local farmer's markets. Always looking for new ways to use them, especially during those holiday cookouts, I discovered this simple and delicious way of preparing turnips that is sure to be a crowd pleaser. The flavor of the turnips, the apple wood smoke, and a sweet & spicy Thai chili sauce are a wonderful combination. The texture is similar to that of fried potatoes and they are excellent as a side dish or as a topping.
- 4-6 Fresh turnips
- 2 Tbsp Thai chili sauce (or your favorite bbq sauce)
- Salt and Pepper (to taste)
- 1 Tbsp olive oil
Step 1: Wash, Slice, Season
Wash turnips well, and peel if they are of the thick skinned variety. Slice the turnips a little thick (they will shrink as they cook) and season lightly with olive oil, salt, and pepper.
Step 2: Smoke and Sauce
Place turnip slices directly on the grate of the smoker, which should be preheated according to your manufacturer's instructions and set to high smoke. Allow to cook for at least one hour. If need be, the slices can be left on longer (smoking them longer won't adversely affect the flavor or texture). Those pictured were actually smoked for over two hours in order to time them with the Smoked Pork Shoulder Roast and Smoked Flat Beef Brisket pictured in the background. About 15-20 minutes before removing them from the smoker, brush them with the Thai chili sauce (or your favorite bbq sauce). Remove from smoker.
Serve and enjoy!
