Introduction: Acetone Steamer

About: Un espacio maker trabajando con la ciudadanía y el barrio. Con la intención de acercar las nuevas tecnologías a todo el mundo.

The 3D printers on the market today and available to the general public make parts of high precision, but many of them need a few minor adjustments to finish perfect. This device to evaporate acetone will help us remove the marks of the printed layers and get the piece smooth and bright. The process must be carried out with pure acetone. Although with nail polish remover it can also be done, but in a much slower process. This device goes well to give a final finish to the pieces printed with 3D printer and made with ABS plastic (since PLA does not allow manipulation after printing), but each piece has a unique treatment, so there is no specific time inside the pot to make them look good.

Step 1: Materials | Resources

- Resistances recycled from an old 3D Printer

- Aluminium foil

- Glass Jar

- Recycled Power supply unit

- Grid - pieces support

- Computer fan

- Structure of a mini PC (Recycled)

- A clip

Step 2: Steamer Struture

The structure of the mini PC will be used as a base

of all the machinery, more than anything so that it is not in contact with the table and the transfer of everything is easier. You will see this below.

1. we put the power supply in its place (as if the computer was complete. The power supply doesn't have to be very powerful).

Step 3: Hot Bed

2. On the aluminium piece that we will use as a plate, we make the corresponding holes for the collar, then the four resistors.

3. we solder the cables of the four resistors in series and add to the circuit the power supply for which we need a 12V cable and an earth connection, we will take them from the power supply of the scrapping PC. The colour chart indicates the voltage of each cable.

Step 4: Inside the Steamer

4. We take the grid from a computer fan and fold it under the four pieces that it is normally collapsed with. This way, we will get a small table with the grid. This will be placed inside the glass jar to avoid contact of the piece we want to perfect with the pure liquid acetone.

Step 5: Fan

5. The computer fan will be attached to the inside of the jar lid with four screws. We have to take into account that we have to make a fifth hole to be able to extract the cables from it and thus make the electrical connection (which we will connect to any 5V cable of the source). With this fan that will be on the inside, we will get the acetone steam to move all over the boat.

Step 6: Connection

6. Finally, the magic trick! We will use a clip to make a bridge in the power supply. One end of the clip will be placed on one of the black wires of the power supply and the other end on the green wire. This way, we will get the resistors to start heating and when they are hot they will evaporate the liquid acetone we have in the pot.
