Intro: Vibrating Alarm Clock | Sugru
Alarm clocks have one big disadvantage. They are not designed to wake up only one person.
If you need to wake up, most likely you will also wake up your partner and sometimes even neighbours.
In this project we will be making a vibrating alarm clock/receiver.
We will need:
- RC toy car
- Alarm clock
- Battery holder and “CR2032” 3V battery
- Vibration motor (3v)
- Velcro straps
- Small hindges (optional)
- Some cables
- Heat shrink tubing (optional)
- Tools, Soldering iron etc.
- Open your Rc toy car.
- Check the voltage.
- Take out the receiver.
- Replace the battery with “CR2032” battery holder and battery.
(Your RC toy car might use different voltage)
- Replace one of the motors (if more than one) with vibration motor.
- Cut the original antenna, so it fits on the circuit board and solder it.
Everything should fit tight on the board.
If your battery holder and vibration motor does not have a sticky side, just use some hot glue to attach it to the board.
The battery holder I am using is actually from a bicycle led light.
Use “Sugru” to make a case for the receiver.
Attach some velcro straps to the sides and cover it with more “Sugru”.
At this point your creation should look like a watch.
Leave “Sugru” to dry before trying it out.
Open up the transmitter and soldier 2 cables to one of the switches.
Those cables will work as switch when joined.
Open up the alarm clock and take out everything that's on the way,
until you have a good access to the bottom cog.
You can also remove the speaker as you'll not need it.
On the bottom cog you will find a metal ring that looks like a “female symbol”.
When alarm function is activated, part of the metal ring (female symbol)
touches the contact on the board activating the alarm.
Disconnect the contact on the board from rest of the circuit. Use screwdriver to break the connection.
Then, disconnect the metal ring from the battery. I used a little cutter.
Solder a cable to the metal ring.
Solder another cable to the side of the contact you disconnected from the circuit.
Now your alarm function should work as an independent switch.
Join the transmitter with alarm clock. We used small hinges to do that.
Join the cables. We used heat shrink tubing for a neater look.
Put on your “Sugru” receiver.
Set the time you want/need to wake up and go to sleep.
When alarm clock will activate, your “Sugru” receiver will start to vibrate.
