I had checked into purchasing some of this-type of Butterflies from an artist in NY, and the price was WAY too much for me to do a wall like this - so I began to think, "I'm creative, with a few different tools, I bet I can do this!"
I tried using a hand-held jigsaw - this vibrates WAY TOO MUCH, and you will likely break the vinyl if you try it! A table-type scroll - or jigsaw is great - but, I don't have one.
So I used the Weller Wood-burning tool - it's a heated razor blade. I actually did 18 - very easy for me I have a very steady hand), but the toxic fumes are not safe. Not only would you want to have completely well ventilated space, you would ALSO need to have a separate FULL FACE MASK - COVERING EYES TOO, and I cannot find one on the market to purchase... otherwise there is a risk. (You might want to speak with 3M, (like I did), or research on internet (as I also did.) Although this is my favorite method - I am NOT interested in self-induced cancer at any point in my life.
The 3rd method I tried was the router tool with cutting discs - they are fragile and although they cut well, the fine curves and thin vinyl points could quickly snap-off if not extremely careful. The finishing touches are required for ALL of the methods.
I made templates from photos I found of Butterflies online... using the block-technique. I tried tracing the shape onto the vinyl - but preferred just keeping the template in place for the cuts, once properly placed.
I have shown in the photos how I placed these, laid out the colors I wanted to make the variety of shapes for the wall, and how they are placed. This is a 17' high wall with 22 butterflies. I added antenna and some legs (especially if the butterfly was carrying another record (45's) up the wall. These I did with hot glue AFTER using a heat gun to bend each butterfly how I wanted it.
Hope you like these. I am available to sell any of these or any new ones. You can contact me here if you have questions, comments, or would be interested in them. There is a significant amount of work in each one - but my prices are very reasonable. Thank you for checking it out!
