Votive Greeting Card

Introduction: Votive Greeting Card

  • This is a greeting card with a bonus: it becomes a votive tea light holder. The tea light greeting card will fit into a regular # 10 envelope. The message and visual image can vary, according to the sentiment and occasion.
  • Necessary materials include:

A pencil and eraser

Cardstock or other heavy paper

A ruler or T-square

A craft knife and cutting surface

A tea light, or votive [battery operated is best] *

* If a real candle is to be used, YUPO, or polypropylene "paper" is safer.

Step 1: Make a Pattern or Template.

Cut the cardstock to 3 7/8 inches by 93/4 inches.

From the left, divide the paper into four sections, measuring 2 1/2 inches, 3 inches, 3 inches, and 2 1/2 inches.

These are the points of the folds--it's easiest if notches are cut at the bottom and top of the card.

Make two slits: one 7/8 inches from the left edge, and the second, parallel to it 1 5/8 inches from the left edge.

Use the T-square or ruler to line the openings up with the "tab" on the right edge.

Step 2: Add an Image...

Once the tab and the opening are in place, add an image. The image should extend into sections two and three of the card, but remain attached down the center. Match the image to the sentiment, and add text, if desired.

Step 3: Cut Out the Image...

Using the craft knife, cut out the image, making sure to leave the center of the image intact. Add text, if desired. Using the back edge of the craft knife, gently score the fold lines--connect the notched points in a straight line from top to bottom at three points. Fold along the lines.

Step 4: Insert the Tabs in the Slots, and Add a Tea Light.

Voila! You are finished, and someone who receives the card also gets a lovely tea light holder.

You may wish to inform the recipient of the purpose of the card...An example:

"This is a votive card. Re-fold along the indicated lines, put the tab end into the slots, and card surrounds a votive or tea light. Enjoy the sentiment and the light."
