That time of year is coming again! Tomorrow is the first day of April, a.k.a. April Fool's Day. This is the day when you can do whatever you want to your parents, siblings, friends, and family and get away with it. This year, I've decided to stem away from the traditional household pranks and pull something a little more innovative. While looking down my brainstorm list of possible future macaron recipes, I came across a few atypical ideas, one of which was wasabi. It occurred to me that this would be a perfect flavor to use as an April Fool's prank. The result? I may have created the purest essence of evil. Innocent and elegant to the eyes, these little "treats" are a devil to the mouth. Simply tell your friends you're making "green tea matcha" macarons, but instead, fill your cookies with a thick paste of pure wasabi. This is a perfect idea for those of you who have too much time on your hands and want to go over and beyond with your pranks. Step 1: Gather Your Ingredients
Of course, before you begin, you're going to need to buy and gather all the necessary ingredients. For this recipe, you will need...
- 2 Large Egg Whites
- 40g Granulated Sugar
- 120g Powdered Sugar
- Pinch of Salt
- 70g Almond Meal
- 1 tbsp Powdered Wasabi
For the filling, if you're performing the prank, you will need...
- Pure Wasabi Paste or Wasabi Powder
If you are making these cookies to ACTUALLY TASTE GOOD, instead, make a wasabi buttercream as filling. For this buttercream, you will need...
- 1 bar Butter
- 2 cups Powdered Sugar
- 1 tsp Vanilla Extract
- 1 tbsp Heavy Cream
- 1 tbsp Wasabi Powder (adjust to taste)
Step 2: Mix the Dry Ingredients
First, but all your dry ingredients together in a bowl. The dry ingredients for this recipe are the almond meal, the powdered sugar, the pinch of salt, and the wasabi powder. Make sure the ingredients are well mixed together, then sift the mixture multiple times to remove clumps.
Step 3: Deal With the Eggs
Separate your egg whites and put them into the bowl of a stand mixer (or simply put them into a bowl and use a handheld electric mixer). Add in the granulated sugar and beat on medium high speed until still and heavy peaks form.
Step 4: Fold All the Ingredients Together
Sift your dry ingredient mixture into the whipped egg mixture, and fold gently until you get a molten lava texture. The mixture should ribbon well, and slowly flow back into the shape of the bowl, but should not be too runny (see my other videos for more examples).
Step 5: Pipe and Prepare
Fill your macaron batter into a piping bag fitted with a large circular tip, and pipe onto baking sheets either lined with parchment paper or silicon baking mats. Make sure the cookies are spaced apart so as to not conjoin. Tap your baking pans on a counter a few times to remove large air bubbles and to flatten out macarons. Then, simply allow your macarons to sit and dry on a counter until dry to the touch.
Step 6: Bake
Preheat your oven to 300-310 degrees Fahrenheit and bake the pans for 18 minutes or until the cookies can almost be removed cleanly from the pan. Remove pans from oven and allow to cool (they will continue to bake and harden from the heat stored inside the pan).
Step 7: Make the Filling
FOR THE PRANK, simply use wasabi paste, or mix wasabi powder with the right amount of water (see instructions on package).
FOR A TASTY FILLING, put the butter (room temperature) in a mixer bowl, and beat on high speed until light and fluffy. Sift in the sugar and reduce speed to low setttings. Once evenly blended, add in your vanilla extract, and if necessary, your heavy cream. Finally, add in your wasabi powder, and mix until even (food coloring can also be added to enhance the color).
Step 8: Fill Your Macarons
FOR THE PRANK, form the wasabi paste into a ball, and flatten into a disk. Make sure the disk has smooth un-cracked edges and LOOKS like buttercream. Put your disk in between two macaron shells, and serve to your victims.
FOR TASTY MACARONS, fill your buttercream into a piping bag, and pipe small mounds onto the center of your cookies. Sandwich two cookies together.
Step 9: Enjoy and Watch Your Friends Suffer
These macarons are great for parties, gatherings, showing off, being bourgeois, making friends, self-indulgence, or of course, pranking your friends.
