Water Purifier

About: Currently studying environmental sciences at UTEC

1 out of every 7, or 884 million people in the world do not have access to clean water. Annually, approximately four million people die as bacteria such as Salmonella, E. Coli, Hepatitis B, among others are present in many bodies of water. Last year our country Peru went through a natural disaster due to the phenomenon of the child and as a result, drinking water was practically inaccessible. The focus of our project will be to improve a water purifier as a potential solution to combat water insalubrity and help minorities who do not have access to this service.

Step 1: Collecting the Materials and Tools

MATERIALS:

- One plastic container

- Black spray paint

- Cotton

- A plastic tube

- A metal mesh

- Activated carbon

- Silica sand

- Zeolite

TOOLS:

- A pair of safety glasses

- A cutter

- A saw

- Scotch tape

Step 2: Prepare the Container

The first thing we'll do is paint the cointaner with the black spray. We chose to spray it with black paint because it would absorb the sun's rays much better. Paint in a ventilated place and away from objects that we want to avoid painting and let it dry completely.

Then we are going to cut a little hole in the lower part of the container because we´ll fit the plastic spout there. Also we need to cut another hole in the top of the bottle.

Step 3: Prepare the Tube

Then we cut the tube with the saw to fit the bottle. When tha tube it´s ready we proceed to seal one of the sides with the strainer or metal mesh.

Now fill the tube with cotton, then with 20 grams of silica sand, again cotton and activated carbon and finally with zeolite.

Step 4: Put Together the Parts

Finally we just have to fit the tube into the hole located in the upper part and the project it´s ready for use. Remember to change the filter every 15 days to keep it clean.
