Introduction: Zombie Bug Out Bag

Now of course the chances of a zombie apocalypse actually happening is highly unlikely, but it's still a fun excuse to make a bug out bag! Also, if you're prepared for a zombie apocalypse, then you're pretty much prepared for anything.

Step 1: The Bag

The bag itself is a 40l military rucksack, found on Amazon here: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01AFZBDF0/ref...

It's a great, affordable, durable bag with a lot of space. It is a very comfortable bag to carry that has adjustable and removable straps that go around both your chest and waist, and also has fairly thick padding for the back and shoulders.

It has 4 zipped compartments and plenty of smaller pouches to hold various things. It even has a velcro shut compartment on the back to store more stuff. Obviously you can use any bag of your choice but this is the bag I use and it is highly recommended!

Step 2: Food/Water

The basic necessities.

Food.

Everything here (except for the canteen and smart water) fits comfortably in the smaller front part of the bag. I highly recommend canned goods as they last a good while and foods like beans and fish are high in protein, so is beef jerky, as well as being light.

The wine gums are a personal choice as they are my all time favourite sweets. I also recommend buying ration bars. They are small, lightweight, last a good few years and are also full of essential calories; a great choice for a bug out bag. Another good option are energy pouches. These are small light pouches full of liquid that will give you a well needed energy boost, they are also very cheap to buy.

Water.

To die of thirst whilst surrounded by flesh eating zombies is just plain embarrassing. You want to make sure you have clean water and ways of getting more. I have a metal canteen (great for boiling and carrying water) and two plastic water bottles. I also have a life straw which is a great little device that filters water as you drink it; of course boiling is always highly recommended, this is great in an emergency situation when boiling isn't an option. I also have a water bottle that does the same thing. On top of these, I also carry water purification tablets. The human body can only go for an average of 3 days without water before it will perish, so you want to make sure you have plenty of ways of finding it.

Step 3: Looking After Your Body!

Some of the items I carry are not essential but are seen as luxury items, for example toilet role. There will always be alternatives to toilet roll, but I like to carry one compressed roll with me, just so I can enjoy one of the beautiful things in life a few more times.

I also carry hand sanitiser (your hands are most likely going to be covered in bacteria - not good), pocket tissues, dust masks, toothbrush and tooth paste (dental health is very important), grooming kit (the file can be used as a knife sharpener, also long nails are just going to make things harder), cotton buds (screw what people say about pushing the wax further into your ear, it just feels sooooooo good), surgical spirit (alcohol) for cleaning wounds, protective goggles (do you really want to get zombie blood in your eyes whilst fighting the undead?), insect repellent and last but not least; tampons. They can be used as a make shift emergency water filter, great fire starter and absorbs blood really well (obviously) making it a great alternative for dressing wounds.

Oh, I also carry a small first aid kit, complete with bandages, plasters, anti septic wipes, pain killers and other basic first aid necessities. Something I have included that a lot of people seem to forget about are laxatives and anti diarrhoea tablets. Your food and nutrition intake is going to be abnormal unless you have stocked up properly, so it is normal for your body to get bunged up, or quite the opposite.

Step 4: Basic Weaponary

If you're fighting the undead, you're going to want some weapons to do so. I live in the UK so firearms just aren't an option. However if you live somewhere where they are legal, then they are highly recommended.

I carry with me a fixed blade hunting knife (I have another currently in the post) a crowbar (great for scavenging and caving in the undead), a hatchet, which can be used as a hammer, a tool to chop wood and as a very effective weapon, a sharpened screwdriver (which I heard can be pretty effective, just ask Andrea) and a baseball bat wrapped in barbed wire; inspired by Lucille from the walking dead.

Step 5: Basic Clothing

This is only what I carry in the bag (minus shoes) not what i'd be wearing at all times. What I do have to wear at all times is a good pair of reliable walking trousers with a top and jacket (warm but not completely waterproof).

The first thing i'd like to mention is a good poncho. It tends to rain quite a bit where I live, and the last thing I want to be (other than zombie food) is completely soaked. Your clothes will stay wet (depending on what you're wearing) and that will make you heavy and cold; not fun. So a good waterproof poncho is highly recommended.

The second thing i'd like to advise is a couple pairs of walking socks, alongside a good pair of walking boots. It is important to keep your feet warm and dry. Two words; trench foot. Trench foot is a horrible thing (google it if you dare) that happens if you don't keep your feet dry whilst walking, which is something you'll be doing a lot of. Keeping a couple pairs of socks can make travelling a lot easier and more comfortable, whist you're at it, bring a couple pairs of underwear too.

I've also decided to include a neck balaclava, as where I live tends to get a little cold and this will help to keep me warm!

Step 6: What's Left

The stuff here is just the things that don't really fall into a specific category.

I'm just going to quickly list the stuff I have left:

  • Tarp
  • Wind up, solar panel radio and torch
  • Survival Bag
  • Bear Grylls Survival Kit
  • Rope
  • 550 Paracord
  • Dog Collar (sentimental value)
