This machete is made from a 30cm ruler i had. It is stainless steel hardened
Step 1: Materials
Metal ruler
Filer/grinder
sharpening stones(one smooth and one rough)
wide string(sorry, don't know what it is called, just found it)
tape
wood
rasp
hack saw
hot glue gun and glue sticks
Step 2: Cutting the Ruler
cut the top of the metal ruler so is on an angle.
Step 3: Create an Edge
Use a grinder or filer to create the edge. i used a filer. The edge should be 25cm long. '
Furthermore, the edge created by the filer should be already quite sharp.
Step 4: Removing the Measurements
I used a small filer of mine is placed the tip agaisnt the ruler and filed off the words.
After the words have been removed, feel free to sand the blade so it is smoother.
Step 5: Sharpening the Edges
First use the rough sharpening stone to sharpen your blade. After the razor sharpness is acheived, move onto the smoother stone.
This is a link to how to sharpen the blade :
http://www.japanesechefsknife.com/HowToSharpen.html
You may have to repeat this process more than what it actually tells you to do.
Step 6: Handle
Take too peices of wood, about 13cm x 2.5cm(its your choice on how long the handle is).
Rasp the edges of the peices of wood so it is round.
Now, put the peices to the blade with. The blade is in the centre and 2 peices around it. You should find that the handle is bigger than how much metal that is provided by the blade itself.
After it had been glued, i filled the gap up with some spare metal i had, you could also do with cardboard.
I linseed oiled my handle later on to acheive a nicer colour.
Step 7: Grip
The handle is done, this is optional. I did the katana grip with my wide string. Here is a tutorial on how to do the grip :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KSYPALS433M&feature=related
After that is done, put some electrical tape below the grip.
I also added a chain to the bottom of my handle just for the looks.
First i got some corrigated cardboard and cut it to the shape of the bottom of the handle
Then, with a chain, i cut it in half so one is in half.
Now, glue the peice of cardboard to the bottom of the handle. Then take the half chain and push it into the middle. This is just to make the holes. If you didn't get a hollow hole, use a knife to do so.
Now, take the rest of your chain, the desired length and put it into the half chain.
Finally, simply glue the half chain into the holes that were made earlier.
I then coloured the cardboard black with my permanent marker.
Step 8: All Finished!
i take no responsibility with what you do with this...

Is it strong enough to stab? Its just metal ruler. I've made dozens of them so I know. Next time, make it shorter or join two piece of metal ruler together to make it stronger (friendly advice) . By the way, your tanto is beautiful. I like your decorations.

dude that looks more like a ninjato to me great idea
Reply 9 years ago on Introduction
No. You obviously know nothing about the ninjato. A ninjato/shinobigatana is a wakizashi-length blade mounted on a katana koshirae.

Did you try any heat treatment with the kives you make from rulers. I am wondering how they turn out.
