For Star

I want to do something for star...as you know, she was arrested for having a "fake bomb" hoodie. Read more here. The problem is that we all live so far apart, we can't have any sort of protest, like was had for the tazed kid at UF. I'm trying to think of things we could do to show our support that doesn't require mass gatherings. So one idea that came to mind was having the front be a picture like what she had on hers, and on the back, some kind of a message. Do you like that idea? Do you have any others? Just like..discuss, and we can try and find the best thing to do. If we do decide to make shirts (iron on paper) maybe we could all wear them monday, or something?

Video with Accent or Sans Accent? - Halloween Contest

This relates to the Halloween 2007 Contest. I'm making a fairly large (I'm calling it Mega) iBle for the contest, in the Decorations category, and wanted videos to go along with it, to help explain. Now, I have a pretty strong accent, and I am afraid that it might not be able to be understood by most of y'all. I figured I have three options with the video, either: A) I talk like I do, and hope y'all can make sense out of it. B) I try my hardest to enunciate, though that might sound as if I'm one of those computer voices. or C) I use text instead of my voice in the video. If y'all need sound clips, I could get them. Thanks, I'm just trying to make this my best one!

Speaker on the blitz

I moved all my stereo equipment around a month ago or so. And I noticed that my speakers never sounded the same as before the move around. Today I got a little fed up with the shitty sound they had, and apon turning my balance on my mac to the left, the music sounds very tonal. It's not very bassy like my right speaker. If I turn it over to the right speaker it sounds normal, and shakes the room, but the left one does not vibrate my room worth 2 cents. I even switched the speakers around to see if it was my left channel on the amp, and it's not, it's the speaker. Anyone have any ideas why it sounds like this?? And yes, it was hooked up correctly, I did try switching the wires around, and it sounded worse, so yes it was connected correctly. These are technics twin woofer floor speakers, thought they were decent but my faith in them is very little right now. Thanks guys for anything you come up with.

Turning instructables into earnables...

Hi - I really enjoy instructables. Seeing all of the cool things people do here inspired me to create a related site. That site is for people who want to post their how-to videos and collect online rental fees. Becoming a publisher is free - the site is supported out of the rental fees (you keep up to 76% of the fees you collect). I won't be tacky (more than I have been already anyway) and post the URL here, but please PM me if you are interested. We're actively looking for publishers who want to earn a few bucks. Thanks, and sorry if this is inappropriate - please delete it if crosses the line. Jeff

There are times when life imitates art. Then there are times when life imitates science fiction. One of the most famous monsters in film history is the extraterrestrial beast of the Alien series. It slowly opened its glistening fangs to reveal a second set of jaws that shot forward to kill its victims.Scientists have now discovered a fish that does the same thing. Liquid Cooling - Body

Its so hot and... well.... I made a device to cool myself down! I might make an instructable, but basically, I took two 20oz bottles with caps, poked 2 holes in the top of one, 1 hole in the other. I then ran tubing between the two, and in the bottle with 2 holes, I added a bit of tubing to put the air intake below water level. I filled the 2'holer up with icewater, and blew a bit on the air intake to get it started. It works very well, to say the least! :P

Cold Cathode Tube Voltage and Speaker Questions

My brother has some cold cathode tubes, some about 6" long, some about 12" or more. I was thinking of hooking them up to my bike, as shown in one of the great Instructables here, but I wasn't sure of the voltage. I don't want to over-power the tube, and bust it. Plus, the two wires coming out of it are in this black connector, so I don't know which is positive or negative. The tubes put out blue light, if that makes any difference.I have an old sports radio, which works pretty good and could be turned up really loud. I desoldered the speaker, and hooked it up to a pair of wires coming from a head phone jack. I plugged it into my iPod, expecting loudness, but no - I had to hold it up to my ear, on full volume, to hear it. Is it because the iPod isn't outputting as much voltage or current to the speaker as my radio was? The radio used 3 AA. I really wanted a portable speaker that actually put out big sound, so I didn't have to have those buds stuck in my ear. Thanks y'all!

Back from the Big Peach

Back from Ole Southey, The Sweaty Apple, Ted Turners Bidet. Yep, talking about Atlanta Ga. and thanks to the interweb I can annoy millions with my travel log.If you like you can check out my pix, I took over 1400, but didn't put all of them online, sorry about the low quality and the image tag, I get tired of finding my pix on other's pages. So my wife and I stayed in an inexpensive best western in midtown, alright hotel, great location, thin walls. We visited the Ga Aquarium, we were underwhelmed, perhaps spoiled by multiple trips to the Shedd Aquarium we were disappointed in that it took only three hours to tour the whole facility, TWICE. The whale sharks are cool, but the cafe is to be avoided, the "burgers" I ordered still had ice in the middle. The Atlanta Botanical Garden is an absolute jewel, I've visited dozens of gardens and this one tops the list, the highlight being the Fuqua Conservatory where you share the environs with poison arrow frogs, along with an outstanding orchid house. The High Museum, is hard to judge, we visited the special exhibits only, it was interesting to see a Rembrandt in person, and the Annie Leibowitz gallery was nice. The Fernbank Museum of Natural History, this one I sadly say, pass on. I LIKE dioramas and natural history museums, but without the Imax movie, it would have taken 45 minutes tops to see the whole thing. Finally the Zoo, a must visit, be sure to visit on a week day, Atlanta seems to be populated entirely with soccer moms witha sense of entitlement and double wide strollers. The zoo has pandas, but the red pandas have greater charm and charisma to them, and you don't need a special ticket.FoodThe only restaurant we dined at worth noting was the South City Kitchen, the food was so good you'll mourn that you will never eat that good again, the She Crab Soup and Catfish Ruben are delicious. And Weissenheimer hambergerler, PM me, Okay ?

Swap Meat

I just ran across this thing:http://www.coudal.com/swapmeat/You send them something you made, and they send you something they made. I always have stuff I made that for various reasons I don't want to keep - it's not quite up to my tweaky-high quality standards, or I changed my mind about the color, or it doesn't fit and I don't feel like working on it any more.Normally I would try this first and report my experiences, but since the deadline is Aug 31, I might not have time to ship and receive AND write up! So there it is, not a recommendation but a Mere link. I'll comment here once I've sent them something and again if I get anything back. I plan to send them a Tribble.Has anyone heard of this? Did you send anything? Did you get anything back?

Instructables Internship - Day 9 (AWESOME DAY!)

Thursday: AWESOME DAY!Thursday was just AWESOME! So basically, I learned how to use the Laser cutter today, and cut out THE FIRST INSTRUCTABLES BADGE EVER!(pic after post)After, I worked with Noah on Project X a whole little bit more, and we got it working, baby!I'm excited to see this thing go for real! But seriously, I can't tell you what it is, yet...Today was also the first day that I really got used to COREL draw, which enabled me to make most of the templates for everyone's badges, which I think are all pretty awesome. Everyone's got a customized "logo" and their username on the badge, which makes every Instructables badge original and personalized. Unfortunately, I didn't have time today to etch all of the badges, so that'l just have to wait until tomorrow.Later in the afternoon, Star asked me if I wanted to go sailing, to which I responded "What?" After I agreed to spontaneously go sailing with her and Tim, she brought me outside, where I learned that we were fixing up Tim's old outrigger canoe that he tried to sail to Cuba in. Tim, Star, and I were all working on the outrigger; lashing a makeshift trampoline on with bike innertubes... actually, most of the frame was held together with bike innertubes, including the rudder. Everyone was skeptical about us actually launching at all, assuming that we wouldn't launch in the dark of the night. Although, lucky for us, we were all "crazy" enough to launch in the dark. We geared up in fleeces, windbreakers, and life vests and hauled the outrigger out by hand (it was on castings), and launched it right next to Squid Labs. At first, Tim sailed us out of "port" (in the lagoon) and out into the Bay. It was spectacular. The moon, the stars, the SF skyline, it was all beautiful. Tim told us of his experiences on the outrigger while he was sailing back from almost Cuba, and proceeded to teach us more about boats in general. He then let Star take over the rudder and sail, while he lay down on the main hull. I was lying down on the makeshift trampoline, an old stretcher, by the way. We watched the stars over our heads, and, at first, the occasional passing of a brown pelican. Eventually, we came pretty close to "pelican island," a protected breeding ground for the brown pelican. Yet, the night was still young. We continued to listen to Tim speak about sailing, occasionally contributing to the conversation as well. It was all fascinating, not only what he told us, but the fact that the source of his knowledge was primarily himself. The other amusing part of the entire moonlit ride was the fact that Tim built the outrigger from essentially scratch, and most of it was lashed together with innertubes. Simply amazing. Eventually, I was given the opportunity to take control of the beautifully made outrigger canoe, and sailed us back from the bay, back into the lagoon, and back onto land. The whole trip was a once in a lifetime experience, although I hope I do get to go on a similar one soon enough. Thank you so much, Tim, for taking me out onto the bay, and thank you so much Star, for asking me if I wanted to go sailing in the first place. By the way, we got back to Squid at around 10:00, I believe, which was again, pretty late for a workday ;)I packed up my things and Tim/Star drove me home. That was pretty much it for that awesome day. Quite possibly the best day in the duration of this entire Internship.Cheers,-Muffinator

Fire wood burn time

So I'll be camping in a State Park where you must bring your own wood. Does anyone know the burn time of firewood? We're burning pine and this is something I've never had to consider, as I've normally camped where you can cut your own wood from dead/fell trees... As we have a rather intense upstream kayak journey to get to our campground, we're trying to take "just enough" but not too little :) Thanks :)
