Maker Faire This Weekend!

Is anyone going to be even close to Austin this weekend? If so, drop by our booth and say "hi" on Saturday or Sunday. We'd love to talk to you and give you some stickers. Our stuff is already heading out on a big ol' truck, but Canida and I will be heading out later this week to see what Austin, Texas has to offer and bask in the Texas atmosphere. Hope to see you there.

The Oddity Fair... I Was There

Mutated Mini Fest performed by Les Claypool, Saul Williams, the Secret Cheif's 3, and Devotchka. The concert was at the Agora on the 22 in Cleveland and it cool AND weird at the same time. The songs that were on the PA as they were swaping things out were really weird. I took some videos while I was there of Les Claypool. Would you call Les Claypool Steampunk or not? Jug Hero to be at Maker Faire

The Make Blog has announced that Jug Hero will be at Maker Faire this year. You play the game by blowing over the mouth of the jug in time to the scrolling images similar to Guitar Hero. For extra points you can clink the bottles together. The graphics look to be a little lacking helping you out with the timing, but it's a cool idea. Hopefully it'll get a little fine-tuned for the big event.

Tesla Music at the Maker Faire!

So today I got a sneek peek of the Maker Faire at Young Maker's Day. And with it, something that simply blew me away. This tesla coil demo uses two TALL towers with lightning bolts coming out the top. The lightning bolts are what make the music! And the drums are robotic! That's what's waiting for all who are coming over the weekend. Enjoy! I included a video. Young Maker Day: Amazing Tesla Coil Music! @ Yahoo! Video

Do you think this is fair?

So I have 2 friends who got in a fight about a week ago, after school, and off campus.  Someone videoed it, and put it on their facebook account.  One of the fighters got suspended for school for a week for the fight, despite it being after school, and not on campus. Do you personally think this is an unreasonable punishment, or is it?  What do you think of this situation? I want to hear your opinions here, and encourage a good discussion.

Steam Fair and Eden Project photos.

Right, that's it for a while - I'm away on holiday tomorrow morning, a week in Devon.Beaches, buildings four times older than America, and the Eden Project.I may even get my kites flying! (Edit: No, I didn't. The beaches were too narrow, too crowded or too non-existent to fly from. The one decent beach we found for kiting (Slapton Sands) was windless the day we went) PhotosI've uploaded selected images to my Flickr account:http://www.flickr.com/photos/76333500@N00/sets/There are two sets there, the Steam Fair and the Eden project.Sorry, no stills of the Stirling engines (what was thinking??), just this video.

Anyone remember this?

Hey there everyone! I was just going through some of my old stuff (trying to find loot for new projects), and I came across this gem. I got this for Christmas 25 years ago and I have held onto it for some reason. It wasn't until I started poking around this site and building again, that I realized why i have kept it. This it what got me interested in electronics.....well not really, I believe this was given to me to curb my random destruction of electronics around our house ;). So I want to say thank you to my dad, whom at the time saw an interest and tried to encourage it. So let me know if you remember this and if anyone still has one!

Maker Faire -- I gotta write this down before I forget

Okay, I realized this awhile ago, and its soooo cool, and I keep forgetting to tell people.I don't know if this was intentional, or not, but anyway. If you know French, you'll appreciate "Maker Faire", because faire can* mean "to make".Maker to make! I like the ring ;-)*Normally, its translated "to do", but it can also be translated this way... even though its barely used like this...

How do I make a woodbaby? Answered

Ok ,so when I was younger, I went to a renaissance fair, and there was this puppet stand. They had these things called woodbabies. They are basically realistic animals that are placed on your shoulder and controlled with a wire. They are very cool, and those who know what I am talking about will agree. I saved up all year for next year's fair (I find out later that it wasn't the price, the freaked out my mom at the time), and when the fair came around next year, and my mom finally allowed me to buy one... THE STORE HAD MOVED ON! They completely removed themselves from that renaissance fair because they didn't make enough $ or something... so.. SADNESS. Anyway, I just found what they were called and where to buy them on the internet... but they are really expensive, and I am wondering if anyone knows how to make one / knows instructions on the internet. Trust me, I looked. That or where I can get one relatively low priced.

When do humans develop abstract reasoning?

This is a great demonstration of abstract reasoning, and the lack thereof in small children. Apparently kids will (almost) always fail this test up to age 4, and almost always pass after age 7. The magic transitional age varies, of course.Parents and siblings, this should give some great hints on how to seem "fair" while still short-changing your child. ;)

Torrenting a movie you own (Legality)? Answered

So, i have been wondering this for a while now, and thought to ask here before I did something stupid and got the feds at my door :) Is it legal to torrent a movie I own? For example, I have an old copy of the Incredibles, but since it was released in 2004, the movie has seen its fair share of use, and at the moment is too scratched to be played (Unfortunately I did not rip a backup...).  So under these circumstances, would it be legal to torrent the movie file, as I have the actual, physical disk of the movie? What about VHS tapes (got my fair share of those). Getting these on my computer would just be some $70 software/recording equipment... it would be faster and cheaper to download them instead of getting shoddy quality off of a 15 year old VHS.  What about for a disc that has been solen? We had our car broken into at one point, and got some 10 DVDs stolen out of it (around 8 of which didnt have a backup)... I would like to be able to get those back, legally, without having to spend $150 re-buying movies already purchased...

how to modify a twin window fan for easy cleaning

Hi, I was given a twin window fan which works just fine but is dirty (dirt and a fair number of ex-gnats).  The manual is no help as it says to wipe the exterior with a damp cloth.  I thought it would be a simple job to just take out the 12 screws holding the two halves together but unfortunately the off-high-low levers (one on each side) are preventing me from separating the two halves.  I can't see any screws holding the lever mechanism in.  I tried rotating one side 90 degrees to see if I could slide the lever out through it's slot but it's too fat. I've had other twin window fans with the same set up and never could get them opened up.  It annoys me that the manufacturers make it so difficult to clean these fans.  I think a fair number of people have this problem and just give up as the local thrift store gets these fans in all the time.  I'm thinking of using my dremel with the cutting wheel and somehow slice off the lever knob.  It would mean we would have a shorter lever on one side but we can live with that.  The lever is kind of wobbly and I'm trying to figure out how to hold it steady without having my fingers so close to the cutting wheel. I know this is a really small problem but it really bugs me that something that should be so easy is difficult.. I'd appreciate any suggestions.

K'nex L98A1 Questions

Ok, So I'm about to start building an L98A1. However, I don't think I should use the cocking handle assembly because K'nex is just too weak to hold up to it. My idea is to use a handle set-up like the SA80, ie. straight into the bolt. I would rather use the rail handle idea though, so if anyone has any suggestions, I'd be happy to hear them. Oh, and some design features: Should have decent range Definitely a curved mag Accurate to about 20 feet Will use a fair few pieces Will have a realistic TMH set-up: ie. Sear behind the mag.

And ALOT of my pieces are broken, so what Id do is seperate the broken from the non broken, and sell the broken one along with the unbroken ones, but obviously, say if it was 1500 broken pieces, id sell em like £5 more? Thats pretty fair, cause you can still use them. But i was just wondering if anyone was interested in buying? But if you want to buy just the non broken knex, just tell me.

I want to have four different guns. I have already planned to use a sniper rifle, a crossbow, a semi-automatic gun, and a pistol, but htat wouldn't be fair to whoever got it (the pistol, I mean). What kind of gun should I use as the fourth type, and does anybody have any suggestions for what gun(s) i should use for each category? They shouldn't use a million pieces. I was also thinking of using a shot-gun. is this a good idea? Suggested guns should not be too powerful, as this war is supposed to be inside.

How do I see how many votes my instructable has for a contest? Answered

So I'm entered in the April fools day project: prank contest with my ible www.instructables.com/id/April-fools-joke-Melting-popsicle-paperweight/ and I was wondering how many votes I have received. I know that people who have voted for you can view the number but since it is considered "not fair play" to vote for your own ible I won't do that. So my question is how many votes do I have en where can I see it? Also does a vote for your own ible count or not? (I read somewhere that that vote just doesn't get count)

Agnostics, Atheists, Skeptics: Help us Christians out!

Ok non-believers, Here's your chance! I am genuinely interested in what BEHAVIORS among Christians truly offend or irritate you. I'm not really interested in biblical inspiration, theology, and belief systems here. "Free-will/Predestination", "Creation/Evolution", and "biblical inspiration/made-up-stories" have been done to death, and I don't really want to discuss those issues in this topic. I mostly want to know what attitudes and actions on the part of Christians, really rub you the wrong way. I will not argue: Biblical accuracy, the existence (or not) of God, or church history here. I also won't dispute your individual experiences with "church people". To be honest, I just want to know how to be a better person. So keep the comments: nice, to the point, and constructive. I will give all genuine criticisms a fair shake.

Best Oodammo Pistol Nominations *read or dont' reply*

Alright so I wanted to settle this very simply. Our good buddy Knex lover is willing to build quite a few oodammo pistols, test them personally, and then do a quick, short review of all of them. The process is simple. The MeZak is pretty much a given so I'm going to just put that on the list right away. The next few guns will be chosen by you, the knexers. Nominate any oodammo pistol you wish as long as you give a fair reason for why. You may choose a couple if you wish. Anyone who nominates their own weapon must also pick another as well. They do not have to be posted yet as long as they will be eventually. 3 nominations are required to get on the list. The 5 with the most nominations will be selected. 1. MeZak 2. TBOS (5) 3. OodAst 3.6 (3) 4. Jamoodassault (3) 5. EAP (3)

Rating system

I'd just like to say two things in relation to the new 'view ratings' feature: Firstly, while you can now see who rated your project low, this doesn't mean said person hates you.  They probably don't even remember doing it.  Sure, mention it to them (I myself have sent a few choice PMs), but don't dwell on it.  You have probably done it at some point, and would probably rather forget about it.  See this as a chance to correct your mistakes and give older projects a fair rating if you want. Having said this, I would hate to see people bullied into giving 5* ratings to everything for fear that they may get picked up on the odd 3.5* etc.  As long as you express your honest opinion. But seriously, ratings on this site are typically ridiculously skewed anyway, so I wouldn't get too hung up over it.  Most people don't care about ratings at all.

Discrimination is rampant

I saw this article in the paper the other day and it really ticked me off. it seems we've worked so hard to battle discrimination that now we discriminate only against atheists and white people.why is it that every religion in the world is safe from discrimination by law but if your an atheist you fair game? you can wear a turban instead of a hard hat at work, you can't wear a hat in school....unless your jewish or Muslim...... if its in your religion to wear a certain kinda pants or skirt...you get your uniform altered....... but you were shorts instead of pants when its 100 degrees out you get written up.you can openly wear religious apparel or pray in public places but if I wear a T-shirt that says I pray to the temple of labatt blue I get kicked out of the mall?we strive for equality, my question is how unequal in the opposite direction does it have to get before everyone ELSE is happy?

New Instructables Contest Page Format, Unfair?

I saw, (And hope you have to), the new format for the contest pages. When I say contest pages I mean the Tooltips contest, Share the Love Contest, Anti-yo contest, and any other to come. I dislike the new format for the pages because I feel it gives a few of the instructables members an unfair advantage over everyone else. On the old pages, everyones instructables were listed on one page, but on the new ones, the most popular are the only ones shown on the front page of the contest. And it's so hard to find the "View All" button, that not many people will likely search through the rest of the insturctables. I just think that having a couple of the lead I'bles on the front page will keep them on top and not give everyone a fair advantage by having them on the same page regardless of popularity. I hope someone else feels this way. Thanks Gunk On Floor

Japan Day 3

Woke up and took a shower. The French couple had left, so it was just Changmi, the Czech couple, and me at the house.I had read the day before that any foreign credit/debit cards will only work at the post office, so that was my first destination this morning. I found what I thought was the nearest post office online, and headed over. My debit card worked, so I took out enough money to last me for a while.Got back to the house, and then went out with Changmi to pick up her friend. On the way to her friends house we stopped off to get some rice balls (onigiri), I picked up a watch at a 99 yen store, and she bought an ice cream bar. After picking up her friend, we all headed back to her house, and she told me they would be filming for a bit, so I headed downtown. I had learned from the Czech couple, that a building in Nagoya Station has a free observation deck, so for the second time I made that my destination. I got to the station, rode up 14 flights of escalators, and took a bunch of pictures. After that I headed over to the osu temple where a local radio station had set up a concert / fair. I stopped to listen to the music for a bit before I checked out an even larger open air market than the one I had seen the day before. After walking around for about an hour or so, I headed back.Back at the house I relaxed in bed for a bit, before Changmi, the Czech dude, and I went to one of her friends bars. Her friends who own the bar have their own band, so we listened to some of their music, the Czech dude played some guitar, we all had some beers, and headed back.*Random note - It is so hot and humid, I decided not to bike around between the cities, because my dehydrated body would be found on the side of the road somewhere. That and the fact that I can get a local (read: non-shinkansen) train to Kyoto for only 25$. Sweet deal.*Random note 2 - They sell fireworks in 7 eleven. How awesome is that.Video of one of the acts at the concert / fair at the temple.

Deleting comments on your own instructable. Good or bad?

I met one of our contributors at Maker Faire in Austin and he had a concern about people posting comments on his own instructable. He wanted to be able to delete comments that he thought were off-topic or rude.We have a flagging system and we do check the flags as often as we can, but there are a lot of comments out there and as Instructables continues to grow it gets harder to keep up.So the question is whether or not we implement our own comment deleting system that some other sites, such as youtube, employ. Is this a good idea or not? Here's how I see it break down:Pros: Dumb or off-topic comments are spotted earlier by users since they get notified of comments on their own instructable. They are also more knowledgeable of the topic and will then know if the comment is correct or not.Cons: Users can squash dissenting opinion. While most Instructables will be speaking from a knowledgeable point of view there are some, it's true, that make Instructables with faulty instructions or are not giving enough information. In these cases it's important to have extra information in the comments. If the user is able to delete objections that are valid, then the result is a weaker compilation of information.Thoughts?

What is the next game in the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII?

After the success of Final Fantasy VII, an entire series about it was made. Starting with the prequel game Before Crisis, a game about the Turks, after that was a movie set 2 years after the original FFVII called Advent Children, next was a sequel to FFVII called Dirge of Cerberus, which is set 3 years after the original game, it is about Vincent Valentine a secret character from FFVII. After that was the prequel game Crisis Core which is about the Zack Fair who weilded the Buster Sword before Cloud. The creator said that the Compilation will continue until the 20th anniversary of FFVII, so what do you think it will be about. WARNING SPOILERS!!   I think it will be a game about Sephiroth's past and his time in SOLDIER leading up to the Nibleheim incident. Or mabey a a game set after dirge of cerberus because in the secret ending of that game Genesis Raphsodos, the villian of Crisis Core picks up the defeated Weiss and says they have much work to do but the creator said that Genesis is trying to save the world so mabey a game about him. Another fun game would be another 3rd person shooter about Cloud Strife's time as a Shinra infantryman leading up to when he met Zack. Tell me what you think will happen next!

AR-4 v3 VS ZKAR V2 Round 2 (Personal experience)

After reading knexgeek's review, I decided to build the ZKAR to see what my AR-4 was being compared against.  I can't do a side-by-side comparison because I ran out of green rods.  Anyways, Here are the advantages of both guns over the other. ZKAR advantages over AR-4 v3: -ROF -Size (smaller, but weirdly uses more parts than the AR-4) -Comfort -Better trigger -Yes, I guess it does have a nice, clean design AR-4 v3 advantages over ZKAR: -Range (gets a slightly better range than ZKAR with an equal amount of bands, around 5 feet better) -Reload (While you can easily slip rods in at regular intervals on the AR-4, I find it a bit difficult to keep the ammo in before I put the pusher in on the ZKAR) -Sturdier than ZKAR (I find that some parts on the ZKAR break after heavy use, while the AR-4 v3 is just fine) -Farther pin pull Now both guns have their flaws, Let's just list some of them: ZKAR flaws: - The back wall on the mag closest to the trigger can break off.  However, it's a good note that the bolt always touches that back wall so I guess it evens out.  It has only broken once when test firing. - If you somehow pull the bolt back and push it forward twice, you find that it can jam and it's a pain to get it fixed. - Sometimes the bolt breaks.  However, to be fair, it only broke during ROF tests. AR-4 v3 flaws: - Can't be loaded upside down (I don't see this as a major problem, and you can shoot the gun upside down, but idunno why you would wanna) - Sometimes the bolt doesn't go into the chamber without "Help", but then you can just stick your finger in. - A few times, the ammo completely misses the bullet lock.  This is rare though. So I guess that's my comparison.  I do like the ZKAR and it does live up to it's rep, but I think it's all an even playing field with each gun having it's own uses on the field. While I'm at it, here's a ZKAR v2 review (I know there is another ZKAR review, but that was for the first version) Body structure: Stock: 9/10.  Why: very sturdy and comfy Handle: 7/10 Why: Sometimes pinches your hand Trigger: 10/10 Why: Very sturdy and original Body: 9/10 Why: sturdy, but a bit hard to build Mag: 7/10 Why: Small chance that the rear mag wall will break off (that has only happened once to be fair) Bolt: 7/10 Why: Works, but the bottom part that pushes the ammo up to the barrel can break after heavy use. Overall: 8.1/10 Performance: Range: 9/10  Why: 55-60 feet with 2 bands Accuracy: 8/10 Why: Accurate at close quarters, not so much at longer ranges Power: 8/10 Why: puts huge dents in cardboard Reliability: 7/10 Why: Sometimes the bolt catches on the ammo being loaded up in the barrel and causes jams.  This is rare and has only happened to me twice.  Everything else is fine. Overall: 8/10 Final score: 8.1/10 Nice gun zak!

Knex Ball machine Twister - TGKTR3 Entry - Now with video!

Wohoo!I finally finished my ball machine. Its by far my biggest build, eating thousands of pieces and many hours. I'm happy with the result though. It features a few larger elements, such as the "Yin Yang" as seen on KI, a switching element made of ball switchers, a large spiral bowl, a big arm dropper and a 2 stage element. All together it comes to over 90 feet of track! The other main part of this ball machine is the lift mechanism, called "switchers" (I think...)They are really cool. One of the drawbacks is that they require a fair bit of energy to work, so I had to gear my motors down t have enough torque. So its a bit slow, but I think its well worth it.But enough of my biased intro, have a look for yourself!Oh yeah, and thanks to The knex weasel, darth trainman, shadowman39, I used their ideas in this ball machine. Also thanks to Gortess, whom I borrowed a few pieces from.Other cool facts...Took a month and a bit to buildTook 2 hours to take apartUses 7000 piecesHas over 90 feet of track!Enjoy! The video has arrived! Sorry for the wait. Hope you enjoy it.Here's the direct link.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1b6WTZWN23Y I had to repost the video on a different account, so your comments/ratings are gone now, sorry. For anyone interested, there was 400 views when I took it down.

New washing machine waste pipe overflowing Answered

I'm the opposite of knowledgeable when it comes to plumbing however I have done a fair amount of searching through forums to find an answer to my problem and unfortunately still have questions. To make it easier, I have taken a picture of the pipes as well as the actual waste hose behind my machine. The hose from the machine sits in what I believe is called the standpipe on the left and goes approximately half a foot down. I have taken apart the p bend (or u bend - still don't know the difference) and confirmed that there is no blockage. I have run a snake down and around all the pipes with no issues and also used some soda crystals just incase but water flows through the pipes easily. What I believe is the issue is that the output from the machine is producing water faster than it can travel through the pipes which are 40mm in diameter. I believe that if I removed the p bend and just replaced it with a 90° corner, it would work fine but obviously it's there for a reason and particularly with the pipes only a 6 feet from the drain, I'm very reluctant to do that. One more thing to point out is that on the right hand side, there is a pipe which I have capped off. I was wondering if that trapped air could be preventing the water flowing down as quickly and if I need to find some kind of air valve which may allow air out? As it stands, I have just put the waste hose into the sink next to the machine and that has let me at least use it for now. I appreciate any advice people can offer.
