Advice on a wood project

I am looking for some innovative ideas along the lines of the normal Mail sorter / holder / bill organizer. All ideas will be considered....this is a home use project so I can get my financial life back in some kind of symmetry, or more organized at least. What we have now:

Any advice for a packrat?

Step 1: Admit you have a problem.Yep, I have way too much junk.Books, magazines, old computers (some really old), salvaged stuff, furniture we didn't use after a remodeling, tools, parts saved for 'future projects,' camping stuff (how many backpacks do I really need?), old skis, clothing, etc. It's getting bad. Last week I bought a new airbrush, 'cause I couldn't find the other two I already own. And that's certainly not the first tool that's a duplicate. Both our parents (the wife's and my) were the same. My sister and brother-in-law get rid of everything to cope. But they over-compensate-- there's hardly a book or a magazine in their home (so spotless it's creepy.)Any advice? Any former 'packrats?' If so, how did you "get clean?"

How to create a large pencil shaped Pinata out of paper mache?

As a group project for several people at my work, we want to create a pinata(s) for the afterschool program in the shape of a pencil and eraser. We want to do it using paper mache and was wondering if anyone could provide a good detailed instruction on what we should use and how we should go about it. We are aiming at having a group of at least 5 people help out and detailed instructions so that we could split up the tasks would be excellent.

Prank Ideas?

I want to prank a girl who I hate because she's been spreading rumours about me. I'm not really very upset about that but I still think it needs to be justified so I'm looking for some harmless and inconspicuous pranks that won't get me into trouble. My class is going on a school trip for a week and I want to take that opportunity to get back at her.  We're visiting a big city and will be touring around during the day stay in hotel rooms at night. I don't want a HUGE prank because that could get everyone into trouble and ruin the trip altogether. The perfect prank would be something that isn't obvious, so it can be blamed on just dumb luck, but something humiliating or at least bothersome.

Looking for advice on building a horn amplifier for a speaker.

I'm looking to build a backpack or box that will have an MP3 player, speaker and phonograph horn.  I want it to look steampunk/victorian style.  I'm planning on just building a good box, and I'm sure I can find a good speaker out there, but I'm not sure how to attach the horn to the speaker and the audio engineering aspects of that.  I'm considering incorporating a tube amp into the mix, and any advice would be appreciated.

DIY Bluetooth speaker build, advice please

Hi all Apologies for the newbie questions, I've decided to build my first portable speaker system. I was hoping to make my own version of the 'Vintage Audio Suitcase Speaker' e.g. www.vcase.com.au I have found some second hand 6.5 inch 'Response' woofers for a cheap price and I have two spare satellite speakers from my Logitech Z-5500 system. Suitcase should be relatively easy to source. What I'm struggling with is the amp and battery choice. I'd like this to be able to run for a few hours on battery, and be easy to recharge via mains or USB. I don't mind spending a bit of money on the amp as I'd like this to last a good few years. The tricky part is, with my current speaker plan, it would need to run 4 speakers that are rated at 70wrms each. Plus the Logitechs are 8 ohm and the Response woofers are 4 ohm. Is this possible? Advice much appreciated.

I plan to either have the cushion restored or to recover in a soft furnishing for a different look However... I am a total novice to this kind of this so I was just wondering: 1. What I should pay for a chair like this, in this condition? 2. How much would it cost to reupholster both DIY & by a professional? 3. How much it would be worth when finished? Any help and advice given would be much appreciated, as I really am unsure! Thanks!

Arduino Mega WaiveShield 48 Button sampler (Advice ?)

This will be my first project, and original reason I found Arduino in the first place! I was searching for an affordable portable music machine. What has developed in my mind has become progressively bigger, but  I digress. I currently have 2 Mega 2560's, Wave Shield, and an assortment of switches, pots, and buttons robbed from "trash ?". In the mail as I type is a Beat707, QuadRam, R.C. MIDI Shield, Mux 2 Shield, 3x 555 Timers, and a  PT2399 delay. My plan of action was to beef up one mega with the quadram, waive shield, MIDI shield, and Mux 2. If this is possible, it would make a 48 Button sampler with SD card slot, MIDI in and out, and just maby 8-10 bit recording capabilities? Mean wile take the timers and delay and create a funky sounding distortion box that can be positioned anywhere in the circuit. The second Mega is dedicated to the Beat707. Question being, what do you think? I have tons of hardware experience, and soldering hours under my belt, but programming is a new one for me. Im not sure how to judge if the Mega will stand up to the challenge of the first combination, but my biggest requirement going into this, was I wanted something portable, that ran off batteries, but was not just a toy. I started calling it the pocket studio, although I doubt it will fit in a normal pocket.

Please help, need advice for installing engineered hardwood floors?

Hi, I recently purchased some 3/8th Bruce engineered hardwood flooring, and was planning on purchasing a staple gun to install the flooring (like I needed a reason for a new toy!), what gauge stapler would you all recommend? Bruce doesn't have specific instructions, it just says the staples should be at least 1 inch long.  I've heard if you buy too big a staple (15.5 gauge), it will cause issues with bumps in the flooring, but I'm afraid if I get too small a staple then it may not attach properly. Please help! As a side note, how big an air compressor would you all recommend?  I was planning on getting a 6gal, 2.6 scfm at 90 psi compressor, and just want to make sure it will have enough power.

Me asking for girl advice, who wouda thought eh?

I'm not one to ask forumers for girl advice because normally everyone gives "hollywood" advice, but I'm in a jam and don't know who else to ask. I have a girlfriend, believe it or not and Christmas is coming fast. I have nothing for her and no solid ideas. I have a couple really good ideas but I can't pull them off. she asked me for a blender, she seems really serious about it but obviously I can't wake up Xmas morning and feel good about a blender....... covering my bases I got one just so she can't be pissed I didn't get her one...... but I need a main gift. Also, her birthday is on the 28th of December.....this is the first gift giving occasion I have been with her and I have 2 in a row....... infact this is the first time in a good 5 years I cared enough about a girl not to break up with her before a holiday just to avoid gift giving (ya, I know....I'm a prick) my other problem is this........ after only knowing me for about a month my birthday came along........ she went out and tracked down my most prized possession that I foolishly pawned as a teenager.......I had to pay my rent ....... i was 18 and pawning my 5 string Gibson epiphone reverse headstock bass was my only option. she found it in a different pawn shop in town and paid quite a lot of money for it.......... for a guess....... I got a little over $500 for it when I pawned it....... and pawnshops usually double or triple the price tag in there store........ my guess is she paid close to a grand for it. for Christmas she got me concert tickets, a remote control helicopter and something else I don't know about. also for valentines day she bought executive box seats for a licolin park concert (she had to tell me about the concerts so I could take the time off work....) I am not a rich man...... I make a few bucks........ but I'm not loaded........... I have no clue what to get her. some of the ideas I did have were: 1. redo her condo...... paint fix stuff up ...... kinda extreme makeover but not so extreme....... this is something I know would make her happy but I have no idea how to get her out of her condo for 2 days without her knowing whats gong on. 2. book a cruise or all expenses paid vacation........ but like I said I'm not a rich man.......so I'll have to like.....put a down payment on it and then like....... give her the receipt for x-mas and go like 6 months later........ but I don't know if thats stupid or what? the only other thing I can think of is like.......... random junk like the blender and maybe some other crap so she has a few things to open on christmas that she likes and or needs and then take her out for dinner for her B-day and give her a diamond necklace........ but I hate buying jewelry for chicks. I must get 2 separate gifts for her because in conversation she has mentioned how people give her stuff and are like happy b-day / x-mas and she hates it......she also hates b-day presents wrapped in x-mas paper. I know she'd be happy if I gave her a pack of gum from the corner store......she's not materialistic or high maintenance........ but I feel like I have to do something nice and special for her? any idea's? keeping in mind I'm not a rich man

Embracing Failure

Some of the best advice I've received was to "fail faster." You want to get the mistakes out of the way, learn from them, and move on as quickly as possible. Don't live in fear of failure as you'll be stuck before you leave the starting gate. It's been good advice and in the spirit of embracing failure, here's a Fail blog that collects Fail images from all 'round the Internets. Looking for any and all ideas/advice for building my own eco home on the cheap

Hi, I am looking for any and all info related to building my own low cost eco house. Off grid if possible. I moved to France last year and purchased a 1 Ha piece of land. I had a good job and the world was our oyster. Then, on Friday the 13th, 2013 I lost my job. I also lost everything we owned in the world when it burned to the ground along with the storage facility it was in - and almost no insurance. This all happened within 90 minutes. I am not looking for sympathy or charity, just good advice. My wife and I are not going to give up on the dream, we just need to chase it on a much reduced budget!   Currently I am clearing the 2 acres (1 Hectare) which is overgrown with about 3000 pine trees, and, thorn bushes that are 3-4 yards tall in some places. I hope there are some fellow dreamers here willing to share their ideas, designs, experience and knowledge. Thanks so much.

I am looking for advice on thermoforming to make a soaking tub from a 55gal HDPE drum

I thought I could make an inexpensive soaking tub by just fitting up an open top 55 gal plastic drum, but my body will not quite fit when I try to sit in it. I just need a couple more inches for my knees. So after viewing a you-tube on how those barrels are made, I have thoughts that I might be able to re-thermo-form the barrel. The more I think about it, if successful, there are lots of uses. Someone posted that HDPE melts around 265F, so I figure that I could get that air temp easily with a hot air gun, possibly inside the barrel, then using a resealable lid, add air pressure to the barrel and surrounded it with a new rigid mold. If I could figure out how to intrude with parts of the rigid mold, I could even make a seat. As I am imagining, the closer I can get it to the shape of my body in a sitting position, the least amount of water I have to use to fill and heat. And then I could add spray foam to the outside for insulation. Does anyone out their have experience blow molding or other recommendations?

Seeking advice: I'm building fake snow sculptures/figures and want your ideas please!!!

Hi all, (I had posted this question in a different forum but I think this one is the more appropriate one for such questions - thank you CAITLINSDAD for your response, included below) I'm making a series of life-sized figures for a show; they are meant to look like they have been carved from packed snow. The designer has purchased mannequins and would like me to sort out a way to make the clothing stay rigid and the final scenic paint coat to look like snow. I'm seeking your thoughts and ideas, here's what I have so far: 1) wrap blanket foam and chicken wire around the arms, legs and torso and then put the clothes on the mannequin, cover the clothes in epoxy resin or fiberglass. 2) same as above but use FGR Hydrocal 50 instead of resins. 3) expandable spray foam the body and then carve back to sculpt the clothes. 4) forget the mannequins and instead carve the whole figure out of foam blocks. 5) for the final texture coat use spray glue and flocking If you have better ideas, tricks or techniques I would love to hear them please! I'm attaching a reference image I found online - this is pretty much what I'm trying to achieve. Many thanks, Damian. ---------- FROM CAITLINSDAD: "I think you would be fine in creating any armature that would be structurally sound since it will be covered over, flocked or painted. Maybe try a drywall compound sprayer to coat the piece. You can experiment with the styrofoam texture "orange peel ceiling look " additives to give it the snowy icy look. Good luck."
