gopro camera and gunfire? Answered

Hello, This question is aimed at anyone who has used a gopro near guns. . . . If I make a chest or head mount for a gopro hero, to use on a shooting range does anyone know if the gunshots are likely to damage the microphone ? If not, is the recording likely to sound like a gun shot or will it be just a clipped phut. Thanks

Is it possible to cancel out sound using hi-fi speakers? Answered

I know that noise cancelling headphones exit but is it possible to scale that up and have the out-of-phase noise played through speakers?  If so, and the microphones were against the wall of the offending neighbour and the speakers were to be aimed at that wall, would the noise be noticeably reduced? Thank you.

Collaboration between ModSquad and OpenProsthetics?

Hello! I'm curious whether the ModSquad group has contacted, or explored collaboration with, the Open Prosthetics Project. While the idea of an inexpensive and colorful cosmetic prosthesis is excellent, I wonder whether it might be possible to develop a somewhat functional, while still inexpensive, prosthetic arm as well. For children, it might not need have the complexity or range of motion the OPP is aiming for, but even something might be useful.

Why does K'nex ammo spin out?

I shoot yellow rods, green rods, blue rods, Oodammo, you name it, and they all are unstable and spin out. WHY IS IT SUDDENLY DOING THIS? It's really bothersome, it's messing up my aim and makes my gun looks bad. I have tried fins, but they only work at short distances. I'm only using 4 #64 bands on a black rod hammer, but why is it so unstable?

K'NEX MK5 Smart Pistol

There is no secondary choice when you have a good secondary. I thought I'd just drop by and give you guys a pic of my new Titanfall MK5 Smart Pistol. Essentially what I did was take my bros new FN Five-SeveN and made it into a heavily modded, futuristic, auto-aiming weapon. I'll be finishing this later on, but in the meantime, keep an eye out for my new Galil ARM.

My airsoft gun.

This is my airsoft gun, its a SAS12. it fires at 240fps (1 joule, the max power limit for ireland) and packs a hell of a punch! its very accurate up to about 50-75ft. i painted the top of the barrel, for better looks, and the notches on the ironsights white, for easier aiming. its magazine capacity is 30 rounds. it also featues a safety switch just behind the trigger. it only cost me €50! (€35 for the gun, €10 for the pellets and €5 for the speed loader (holds 100 pellets)) its a brilliant airsoft gun!

To all the archery enthusiasts

So I need some help. I have been shooting for some years now (about 4 or 5) but I still am having one problem. I am using a 70 lb. draw weight on my bow (compound bow) but when I go to shoot and I am aiming low I cant raise my arm up to get the pin on the bulls eye. (This happens when I have the bow drawn). So if any of you have an idea for something that I could do to help please comment me. I will try all ideas at this point.

I get on here at the library every once in a while though. When our computer is working better and I can get on here again hopefully I'll have a new sewing machine! new knex gun coming out acctualy it out now name: morretti SR-4

The gun that can shoot better than Gorkems sniper ,and looks much cooler. here is a linkpic 1 ,2 ,3 ,4,and 5 are all old now. 1st pic is the gun it will be ,sorry it's such a small pic they don't have any bigger ones. ) : 2nd pic is a close up of the scope kinda dark sorry. 3rd pic is it with the new butt/stock ,and for grip.4th pic is tit with a new barrel that still needs work ,and the for grip is a better color.5th pic I added a bi-pod it can fold up it's awesome its not fragile ether!6th pic it now shoots gray rods and can shoot through hardly damp shoe boxes from 15 ft away ,and normal card board at 3 ft. away. and it has a new bi-pod taking inspiration from (knex sniper rifle)s bi-pod it works great now I got my sister to shoot it and she hates knex guns.7th pic It has a newer stronger bi-pod ,and a clip flap. 11th pic just a speciall thing you can add to make it reely beastly it still shoots just as good like that wich is awesome. I now added a flap to close up the mag and changed the front sight. Breaking news I got it to shoot 50ft ,7in. without aiming up I think its the best gun ever.More breaking news I got it to shoot 64 ft. and 5 in. by aiming it up at a 40* angle ,but you won't want to do that it is allot more fun to shoot something 15-20 ft. away without aiming up.It also shot in to an apple and 2 layers of bubble rap not to big of a deal. The mag uses 4 decapitated gray connectors ,or 2 orange connectors because you get two if you use orange connectors. It can use two square plates the size of a yellow rod from corner to corner ,and 2 triangle ones the size of a yellow rod on the biggest side.

PC ARCADE GUN

Ok I've got an idea of a aarcade like gun that could be used for your everyday PC \lappy. I was thinkin that people could probably use the arcade gun for a mouse.   Instead of using it just for game etc it could used to play FPS game and even for FPS creator so instead of using your mouse it could be as if you were the character and the one who is aiming!!! I even noticed that the newer or older? guns with a slide would be cooler.

Home page

I am at a complete loss as to why the most recent projects are not on the home page. Some of the projects shown date back to 2014!!! There seems to be no logic as to what is being shown.I hate to say that the previous version of the site was better when some of the improvements are great and it looks a lot better; HOWEVER, being able to see all the most recent project (whether featured or not) from the home page was great and it gave us makers something to aim at. It now seems that posts will be basically hidden unless someone is following you or the group that you post you.PLEASE bring back a simple way to see all submissions to instructables so that all authors get their moment of glory! Hiding recent and new featured posts within individual feeds does not provide that wide and varied community feel that the website use to have as soon as you opened it. Aaarrgghhh!!! now I can't figure out how to post this without putting it into some unrelated category!!!!

A Discussion and Breakdown of Opinions and Controversy Within The Community

So I had this dumb idea that a few of us "KI"ers, as you call us, could have a fruitful and interesting discussion based on several topics through an audio AMA-type format.  The idea is that you guys post a bunch of questions below, and we answer and elaborate as we see fit after a week or so, putting all the discussion in a nice, short 30-ish minute podcast.  If you're interested in hearing us talk about whatever, whether it be our taste in mechanics, or what happened with KI, or even how you guys feel about us, let us know below and we'll see how this goes.  Again, I aim to approach this with a semi-serious and thoughtful tone, so it's not just going to be 30 minutes of us saying "lol those ibles guys are so silly" and such nonsense. I don't expect much to come out of this, but if we have some fun or start a fluid conversation, it'll be worth it.

Suggestions for high pressure/velocity pumping of diluted tempera paint.

I've received the request to build a theatrical prop that should be able to shoot a diluted tempera paint 30- 50' from the gun. Any suggestions for where to begin looking for a pump capable of that kind of pressure or velocity to shoot a relatively narrow stream great distances? I don't think water pumps would be able to handle the extra viscosity of the diluted paint. This would not be aimed at anyone, but over a dance crowd. Amazingly, people pay money for this experience.  Anyone know what the guy with this green paint is using? Looks like a miniature fire hose. Many thanks for any suggestions! Instructables members are a talented and diverse bunch!  Everyone's answers have been very helpful. Through your suggestions and additional research we have determined that portable fire fighting pumps are the simplest method for moving a diluted paint solution great distances. The suggestions for using pressurized bursts of paint have also been helpful. Thanks everyone!

How make round 5" air duct valves?

We moved into a large (for us) house, and we only use a few rooms. I managed to repair the furnace, but the first bill was astronomical. Beyond the leaking windows and lack of insulation, the problem is that, as it is, we have to heat the whole house. I've discovered a temporary method of blocking vent tubes to unused rooms (by stuffing the tube with a rag), but I want real valves. I've heard they are called air duct dampers.  My vents are on the ceiling aimed down.   So, I've seen these check-valve 5" ones https://goo.gl/8zRGLX but I haven't found any that would open and close manually.  But this doesn't seem like it would be difficult to make. I'm toying with the idea of using a cone-shaped "lid" with some kind of springy cord holding it in. Does anybody have any ideas?  How do I make a manual (or electrical solenoid, I suppose) operated valve for a 5-inch round air duct?

I need help dealing with two bullies at my school......

Heya guys, I desperately need help with two bullies at my school. They ain't strong or anything, but they're good with words. Their names are Jocco and Lucas. And lemme tell you, they are such a pain in my arse. Their targets are usually the new kids, like me and my friend, Danny I know it's just best to just ignore them, don't sink to their level and all that, but when they made my friend cry in more then one occasion, that's going too far. Their jokes are mostly sexual and racist, calling me and Danny gay just for being friends, saying that I have a vagina, and even going so far as to say he f'ed my mother. And his racist jokes are usually aimed at Danny, due to him coming from Czech Republic. I need help, and fast. P.S: Not trying to act like a junior gangsta or anything, but please don't tell me to report this to the teacher or something, because if I do, my popularity will drop faster than I can say Barrack Obama. Thanks in advance.

Warbow

(Sorry for the blurry pictures, it's not very easy to aim a camera that's part of your watch.) Not technically a crossbow, but it's based off the Heavy Crossbow's barrel and trigger. This is not your secondary war weapon. Nor is it your primary. This is your "I'M GONNA FREAKING KILL YOU FOR WHAT YOU JUST DID" gun. It moves a red rod with a grey on one end and a red with a green rod on the other faster than my eye can follow. It doesn't have particularly long range as far as I can tell, but that's because my room isn't very long. It did, however, put a good size dent into what is for other things a nigh-indestructible door with the lightest ammo that it can fire.  I'll post this if enough people want it, which I place at about three for a slideshow showing how the insides work and six for an actual 'ible. Please note that this thing is too complicated to build from the pictures due to the casing of the mechs and the unique way the barrel is made. EDIT Posting tomorrow, have pics. Also has a just-implemented third firing mode, "booby trap", which holds the front trigger at its extreme forward and when the pin is pulled allows the trigger to shoot backward, firing the gun. Basically a game breaker, because it'll end up shooting them in the soft part of their side if it's at a proper height to be set off by walking.

New Side-Arm DMTD (name pending)

Well some of you might have heard dsman and I are making a new side arm mainly by combining our side arms and then adding even more features. Some things we (well I) plan on -Stronger and just as reliable as DMS -Small and as comfortable as TDS -Removable magazine -Slide -A new feature I'm working on. Adjustable site for aiming at distances. So yeah we decided to team up because I honestly just got tired of competing with dsman. I have some questions for you though What ammo do you want us to use? We are leaning towards dark greys. Also what other details do you want? Such as what kind of trigger (true obviously) and also do you want it to be detailed like the gun down below or do you want it to be straight forward like the TDS? Give me any other features you want. This gun isn't what we are working on...yet. We might use it as a base. For anyone curious this gun is my newest version of what used to be the D. Falcon from the video comparing our side arms. It was what I was working on to beat both of them. This is mainly for the concept removable magazine I'm working on.

Alternative knex gun power source

I think this situation has happend to everyone once(pulls pin back)*SNAP!* "dang it, my rubber band broke"and let me say i HATE it when that happens, i got so tired of it that i decided to try an alternative, what did i use? Springs! I bought a pack of springs for $3 and lets say they work perfectly! they made my new sniper rifle fire over 80 feet before it hit the wall, so i dont know the exact range and i though i was set for a month of 2! ...well untill the 3rd day of useing them... the one i was useing got alot weaker i started to realise before i could hit the target on the wall without aiming upwards, now it dose not even reach 60 feet! (i noticed after i did my video) my first reaction was to check the breach load for any fragments of broken cartrages. none to be found. i thought "oh maybe the pin's tape has to be replaced (easy enough) as i took the main gun peice (the part of real barrel and breach load stuff not like handel or stock) it hit me! when i first used the gun my shoulder would pop and i could not get that strong in 3 days. and as i stared at the pin it seemed the spring had stretched! (this is a expantion spring so thats not good) now i am very upset cause i am on the 2nd spring and it took me forever! to get the pin exactly right the first time.so thats why this is here for any good ideas on how to have strong (yet long lasting) power sorces cause lets say RBs dont seem to like me and springs can get anoying and expencive.

EAP Vs. Oodassault V3

Well the oodassault V3 was in part a challenge to DJ at first. I also challenged the comment by KSC that he could and would make a new oodammo pistol that would be better than mine if I were to make a new one. We seemed a little hard-edged at first but we turned it around into a friendly competition. You guys are the judges. The instructions are simple. Just rate the EAP and the Oodassault V3 both out of 5 of how much you liked each of them. I'll count them up when we have plenty of comments. That way we can see ultimately which people not only prefer but how popular overall they were. I personally think it's pretty close. Feel free to tell us what you want us to improve on so that we could try making the perfect oodammo pistol. Please put your ratings at the very beginning of your post and try to limit other comments so that I can total them up easier. EAP and Oodassault shared Pros -Strong structural designs -Triggers built for power -Comfortable Handles -High cap mags -5 layered with few blue rods sticking out -both can be loaded while half loaded. EAP Pros -Probably a bit stronger structurally -Doesn't require as many black Ys -Stronger magazine -Chances of firing more than one or the magazine breaking are slim -Fast front loading -Internal Mag pusher Cons -Bigger -Harder to aim -Uses Wheels for handle -Best requires a modified piece for trigger Oodassault Pros -Pretty compact aside from magazine -Comfortable handle without use of wheels -Tilting mag that locks back -Can accept stripper clips or detaching rod clips -Trigger guard and safety (simple mod I made later. I can explain it if people really want it) -No modded pieces needed Cons -Uses more Black Ys -Less sturdy magazine -Less reliable firing -External Mag pusher

Oodassault Pistol Review

This is a review of TD's newest pistol on Ibles, the Oodassault Pistol.Review requested by TD.Range: 7/1025-30 feet with 2 64's. Could be better, but not very bad for a pistol.Looks: 9/10Bleh. I don't look for how a gun looks, just reliability and power. But I'd say it looks pretty good. Strength(in terms of holding together) and Comfort: 7/10The back of the pistol exploded once for me. I wouldn't recommend putting too many rubberbands, the back may explode if you do.Also, the thicker part or the handle (middle layer) was pretty flimsy for me, and broke pretty often. After replacing the blue clip with a tan clip, it stayed in place and never broke off. No biggie.Other than that, very sturdy.Handle's very comfy, no rods sticking out anywhere.Reliability: 10/10Not once has this pistol jammed, or the trigger system failed. Power: 8/10Not too bad. Dents my super-special awesome cardboard (with extra reinforcement) a bit from a good 5-10 feet away.Accuracy: 9/10This uses oodammo, of course it's very accurate. I can hit a 3-inch target from about 15-20 feet away (and I suck at aiming lol).Extra Features/Sights: 7/10Sights are kinda unnecessary, but fun use if shooting at stationary targets from a REALLY short distance. Safety is also fun to play with, and pretty innovative. Nice work, TD. Piece Efficiency: 10/10Uses very little parts, and gets the job done.Overall: 8.4/10Very good pistol for playing around and war (for a sidearm). Reliable and powerful (for a pistol), this is a must build for anyone with the pieces. Ible: https://www.instructables.com/id/Oodassault-Pistol/EDIT: I have a bad sense of measuring. My friend with better depth perception came over today. He estimated about 20 feet flat with 2 #64s. Whoops :SAnd TD's right, I do rate too high. :S

K'Nex Guns Need To Move On!

Alright, someone needs to say this so i will. Knex guns are stuck in this sort of, generic handguns, average assault rifles, shotguns with nothing new. We all need to rack our brains and come up with some concepts, then post them. So we can all have a crack at a what would be considered "HARD" concept. We need to be trying new ideas. We're stuck in a dark age of nothing new (only rarely something good might come out) we need to step forward . Basically, I'd much rather see some pics of a failed concept and what you were trying to acheive than, "Removable Mag Handgun" or "M8AR (MegaMetal8's Assault Rifle)" which is just a generic removable mag gun. I Say one of us with quite alot of subs needs to make a ible/forum where EVERYONE has access and can post concepts. Its just getting boring with all this, so for more fun and ideas. Together, LETS DO THIS! Thankyou for reading and together we can make this happen. -MM8

My random bullpup model

So Dr. Richy posted his CAR which drew a little inspiration from this weapon that I posted on Red's wall in hopes he just might be able to turn it into a firing weapon. However, as I suspected, that's just not an easy task and I didn't expect it to happen. So I'm gonna just throw this out there and show anyone that didn't see it. It's made to be convincing, it could probably be turned into a real firearm. It's a bullpup designed to take 5.56 NATO rounds. I designed it to be somewhat ergonomic and compact. It has the front grip from...I don't even know how long that I used on my UMP. It's pretty simple, reasonably comfortable, and lets you quickly attach any front grip or bipod you can come up with. The muzzle was made from a new concept for a rounded barrel that could be used as a real K'nex barrel. This can also take a very cruddy and simple silencer attachment (which is actually just my Master Sword handle that I never wanted to disassemble). Then I added a basic rail on top that allows it to take airsoft or real rail accessories. It's not perfect, but you can get the accessories to grip into the grooves. I added a fake charging handle that is located in a decent, but not optimal position. This flows into a cheek rest of sorts that's rather close to the back of the gun so it can accommodate the charging handle pin. Your head is kinda cramped against your shoulder, but your face itself is comfortable aiming. And the front sight is detachable if you were to add a rail sight. I'm thinking I'll probably make a new one tonight for fun. It'll be shorter to be similar in size to a PDR. However, I might (not a definite) give it exchangeable fake barrels based on this one that allows it to lock in with a single pin. Secondly, I'm going to change the front to include an integrated folding forehandle that will also be comfortable to hold folded. Or so I hope. I'm also going to move the charging handle forward and make the roof one and the same with the rail to slim it down ever so slightly. This will also move the cheek rest forward to a more accurate position like on Dr. Richy's. Finally, I hope to add some nifty features but I'm not sure at all on these. One would be a bolt lock which probably wouldn't be too hard. It'd basically be like the charging handle is a firing pin and the bolt release would be a trigger, just mounted differently on the gun. And then the harder one would be to make a magazine release near the handle like on a PDR instead of the current one I use that makes you have to "strip" the magazine. On a real gun, this would be a great feature for making reloads a lot faster.

K'nex Gun Review - RBLTR V.1 (Red's Breach Loading Tactical Rifle)

Hello All This is a review on 'RBLTR V.1 (Red's Breach Loading Tactical Rifle)'. The RBLTR V.1 was published on the 1st of July 2013, and is considered by red himself to be his most powerful K'nex gun he has ever built. After building the gun and seeing the internals, it uses a pin pull mech and they look very similar to the G36C mech. There are many nice features to this gun that makes it original like the comfort bar and the sights. The gun shoots yellow rods to anyone wondering. STATS Range 10/10 - The range of the gun is rather high than an average gun. I managed to get 50ft accurately and around 80- 90 ft at an angle. It it described that the gun can reach ranges up to 70ft in the original description so I think 70ft is a fair judgement. As I managed to get 80ft plus,  I think the rating is 10/10. Appearance/ Looks 8/10 - The gun at first sight looks pretty hardcore although this does not really matter, I personally liked the comfort bar and the sights. The gun has a solid build so I think around a 8/10. Internals 8/10 - The internals within the gun are rather good, although I have had a few jams so I think 8/10. Broken Pieces 9/10 - The gun does not use any broken pieces however in some places the performance of the gun will exceed if broken pieces are used. That having been said I think a 9/10. Comfort 10/10 - I admire the gun mainly for its comfort of the handle. This helps to make the gun more accurate while aiming therefore a 10/10 without a doubt. Rate of Fire 6/10 - The ROF on this gun is quite good. When reloading this gun it did not take too long but their has been a lot more quicker and so I think a 6/10. Sturdiness/Durability 8/10 - The gun is put together well as I said earlier and I find it firm. When building this and adding the comfort bar is seemed that it was weak but as I added to it, it strengthened. Although the permanent fore-grip is rather weak in my opinion and could be stronger so I think a 8/10. Overall - 59/70 - This gun overall is awesome and I would recommend to build it! Also keep in mind that this is my ratings and opinions of the gun. Be sure to check out The Red Book of Westmarch's other guns. I hope you have enjoyed the review! Thank you! Hunter999

Avoiding Unnecessary Conflict in the Workplace

I was sent this advice by a professional body that aims to provide "work life support" - basically trying to cut the amount of stress suffered by UK teachers (in any one year, around a third of serving teachers will have time off sick with work-related stress).  It's good advice for people in a lot of jobs (such as the infamous cubicles of American office life), so I thought I'd share it: Most of us spend the majority of our time at work, so when we experience conflict in the workplace it can have a huge impact on our lives. Disagreements are commonplace in a working environment, and can be helpful in challenging preconceptions and developing ideas, but this can descend into conflict when agreement cannot be reached, and neither party is prepared to compromise. This can be particularly difficult if one party feels victimised, ignored, belittled or intimidated. Often conflict is the result of miscommunication, and the best communication occurs when all parties are listening well. If we feel heard, we are more likely to want to listen in return, and to reach a better understanding of where the other person is coming from. Active listening will help you to hear and understand exactly what the other person is saying, and will encourage them to share more information. To be a good active listener:   •              Stop talking! You might be tempted to interrupt, but try to wait until the other person has finished saying what they want to say. •              Make sure you are giving good non-verbal signs that you are listening. These include maintaining eye-contact, having a good open posture (not crossing your legs or arms), looking interested and nodding. •              Use silence. If you pause for a few seconds before speaking, you may find that the other person has something more to say. •              Try to catch yourself if you're losing concentration. You might be drifting off, thinking about what you're going to say next, feeling sleepy, planning your dinner... •              Check your understanding frequently. You can do this by asking clarifying questions, repeating back in your own words what has just been said, or summarising what they've said so far. Get the other persons agreement that you've understood them correctly - if you haven't, then ask them to repeat what they've said and try again. •              Use open questions (what, where, who, why, when) if you want to get more information and encourage the other person to speak freely. Use closed questions (those resulting in a yes/no answer) to get specific information or to clarify your understanding. •              Be on the look-out for non-verbal signals - do they look tense? Are they speaking more quietly than usual?   ...we now return you to your usual programming...

TheDunkis's M4 Carbine

Ok well I really wanted to make my own to show my friends and even my dad for self satisfaction but I decided seeing that we don't have an M4 that both looks good and works great that I'd show you guys too. Uh let's see I'll just make my pros and cons list for a basic run down of my gun then I'll explain in better detail below that. Pros -30 white rod rounds med-cap magazine may become detacheable with simple mods (it's set up to be I just fixed in there for more support) -Cocking handle set up on firing pin to reset the pin then slide back automatically so pin is not in your way -4 sided rail system can have many features attached to it -true trigger Cons -Stock is only decently strong as I'm working on making it adjustable -Trigger guard area may be small for bigger hands but easily modable (it's a little tight for me and I have very small hands :( ) -Back sight need's to be secured in it's position while front sight may spin out of place. I'm working on this -Hard to muzzle load anything other that a grey rod and this still requires a tad bit of work -Near mid magazine it might jam if you fill it with ammo to that point -Uh I can't remember anything else but I'll be sure to list any more that I find. OK for details It uses another curved magazine (yes I like curved magazines) although it only uses joints and no bendies. 30 rounds like I said although if you fill it up to a certain point you may potentially jam it unless you watch carefully. It has the potential to become detacheable on how I made it but for now I just added a couple pieces to make sure it wont just fall out or wabble. It uses a basic but strong firing pin with a cocking handle system that is rigged to pull back the firing pin but then slide back into position so that you may rest your cheek to aim without the firing pin in your way. It uses a basic true trigger mechanism that I don't know who invented I just remember seeing it somewhere then I modified it to work in my gun. It uses a pretty simple idea for making a 4 sided rail system. I swear I did not take this idea from any other guns although I've seen one just recently that uses a similar system. For the sights I made a small peep hole for the back and then I just use one of those orange "handle" connectors or whatever you want to call them for the front blade. I'm trying to make the stock adjustable but for now I just have it fixed. Hopefully I get a picture up soon. Hmm either the spell check isn't working or I typed a perfect paragraph! By the way I really want to make another video soon so I might use this gun for a video. I'll most likely only get videos of guns with either a lot of features or ones with a new mechanism.

Bolt Action Rotary Magazine Gun (updated with internals)

Alright, it's been a while, forgive me. I work in spurts of an hour or two every few nights. It's not quite finished, but it's at a point I'm comfortable showing. I'm also working with BM, so hopefully he can make some improvements on it before it's posted. This gun is the combination of two different goals I've had. First off, I always wanted to make a bolt action. I came up with the idea for the modern bolt action long ago but was beaten to the punch. So since then, as others have made their own bolt actions, I still struggled to make one up to my own standards. I wanted something sleek and compact with a removable magazine. Second, I went off on a little tangent while building, which then turned into its own project: a rotary magazine. While it's been done before, I don't know if it was ever successfully used in a gun. It's more about the novelty than the practicality, but what it does do is give you more storage in a compact design and act as a decent foregrip. I wanted to make it a decently usable. At first I thought of making just some cruddy gun to show off the concept as a usable magazine, but then I decided I may as well go the full nine yards and make it perform well. So this is what I ended up with. I don't have a real name for it yet, but I've considered calling it the Barackuda, a portmanteau of Barack (Obama) and barracuda because...well why not. I wanted to keep it as compact as possible, so I used a barrel similar to my Oodassault 3 series and a stock connection similar to my PDR. The stock is a bit long compared to the body of the gun, so it may look awkward, but I wanted to give at least enough room to aim the gun without sticking the pin into your eye. The blue connectors in the stock stop the bolt right after the trigger engages. The bolt is somewhat typical. I like how it sits flush with the back of the gun rather than looking like an extension on the back of it. The handle isn't amazing, just a variation of my tried and true handle I've come to like. The trigger also isn't amazing, and in hindsight, I want to block a bit further back still, but it works for the limited space I've got. The magazine on the other hand is magical. Go look at my last topic for details on its operation. This version is for yellow rods. I've added a rotary lock and band. When the middle rod is pushed toward the trigger (like in the pic), it's locked. It can securely contain 10 usable yellow rods while locked, though it can load up to 12, the top 2 can fall out. You insert it into the gun by pressing the top two red rods at an angle into gaps in the grey connectors at the front, then rotate the magazine, slightly pushing in, until you get the white rod in the gaps of the yellow connector. Finally, you push in the middle red rod by the trigger all the way forward to unlock the magazine. Edit (9/10/2015): Made my adjustments and now I'm mostly satisfied with the weapon. Here's the video.

The Instructables Knex Tournament - with Prizes! :D

The Knex TournamentI am NO knexer. At all (I lie, I have a Knex pocket turret I designed sitting next to me right now. Whatever.) I have posted no Knex Instructables, no forum topics besides this, and only have half a blue tub of Knex in my basement. So why the &%! would I post a Knex contest, and offer fabulous prizes (look below)?Recently, for those who don't know, an argument in the Knex section has been going on. Quite a few Knexers, angered by their in-ability to pay for Pro (I need a pro judge! Look below), have left Instructables for a clone known as Knex Innovation, which is a Knex site similar to Instructables, but with higher criteria and no 'Non-Knexers". This gets me down. Instructables is a great site, and a substantial group leaving it makes me angry, esp. as it is over a small issue. However, one of their complaints- that Instructables does not cater to Knex- is completely true. There have been no official contests, and all the user-run ones are small. So here is a contest that I hope will draw those Knexers back to Instructables, while also improving the Knex image. Rules:Your entry MUST be original. No mods on anything existing. Borrowing parts from other builds is allowed with original author's permission. A PM will do.Your Entry must be completely Knex and rubber bands. There will be two non-knexer judges (myself and one Pro person, who is willing to provide prize patches) and two knexer. All entries will be up for judging by the people, and any person who wishes (including judges) can post their three votes IN THE THREAD FOR THAT ROUND. Votes posted anywhere else will be ignored. The top fifteen in the first round will advance, then the top ten. The third round is the judgment round. Dragon Samurai Chapter 3

Here's the third Chapter. The plot is thickening! :-) PLease tell me if there's anything that could be improved! Chapter 3 The dojo It took another few hours before we actually reached the dojo. The girl with the golden hair had come in and out of consciousness during the day. Clouds were starting to surround us and we weren’t far away from the entrance. I was about to ask my dad a question when a kunai shot past my ear and stuck into the ground. I turned my head around to meet a rain of kunai and shuriken. “Father,” I cried. He barely turned his head an inch before catching sight of the ninja weapons. We broke into a gallop and barely escaped the deadly blades of the kunai and shuriken. One shuriken was aimed straight at the girl. I took my bokken and deflected the ninja star. I had practised sword defence several times with my father. Not a second past when a second wave of weapons was launched form the trees. My father drew his katana and deflected several shurikens and I did my best with my bokken. A kunai embedded itself in my bokken and a shuriken grazed my cheek. I winced and held my cheek feeling the warm blood seep out of my veins. We were now metres away from the dojo’s entrance. No ninja would dare enter it. My dad called to the guards to open the gate and they obeyed. The gate creaked open and we rushed in. The gate closed and several kunai and shuriken clanged against the metal gate. Inside the dojo we were safe from any attack. I breathed heavily as I got off the horse. I got the girl down from the horse while clutching my cheek which was still bleeding. My father ordered me to take the girl to the healers. I walked through the dojo admiring the amazing buildings and statues. There was a beautiful fountain in the garden full of birds bathing themselves. I continued walking until I was walking past the training halls. Curious heads popped out of the halls and gasped at the girl with golden hair. The pupils soon returned to their training when the sensei hit one student’s shins with his walking stick. The young boy winced and held his legs. I had a feeling that the sensei’s hit was harder than it looked. We soon arrived at the healing quarters. I laid the girl in one of the beds and a lady carrying medicine rushed into the healing quarters. She quickly opened a door and placed the medicine on one of the benches inside the room. She came out of the room and noticed that I was standing next to the bed here I had laid the girl. “Oh, I am truly sorry for my rushing,” she said. “Now what do we have here.” “My father and I found her unconscious in a forest near here,” I started. “She’s been coming in and out of consciousness during our journey.” She observed the girl and felt the pulse of her blood. “Her blood circulation is running normally. She doesn’t seem to have a fever.” She performed several other medical procedures before she looked at me and said, “She just needs to rest. You on the other hand need to clean your cheek to prevent infection. Run along now.” I bowed and went to the bathrooms to clean my cheek. Inside I found someone I really didn’t expect to see. “Ryu!” cried Hiroshi. “What are you doing here, Hiroshi?” I asked amazed by his presence. “I’m here to train just like you. What happened to your cheek?” “We were attacked on our way here. A shuriken grazed my cheek.” “You also got a kunai in your bokken.” I looked down at my wooden sword. I took out the kunai which had put a hole straight through the bokken. I sighed. I’ll need a new one. I washed my face and told Hiroshi about our journey here. I explained how we found the girl and were attacked by ninjas. Every now and then he would gasp or gulp but I didn’t mind. Once you’ve lived with Hiroshi for over five years you get used to what he does. He always interrupted sentences with a mumble or yawn or any other type of noise including noise that didn’t come out of his mouth. A bell rang in the distance. It was time for dinner. I could smell the cooked rice and the chicken and my mouth started watering. We walked to the dining hall and sat down about halfway down the left side of the table. The teachers sat up on a raised table and my father was sitting on the far right. He was staring straight to the forest. His expression was hard to decipher but he seemed worried and I had a feeling that it had something to do with the ninjas that attacked us. The man in the centre of the raised table stood up and the hall went completely quiet. “Today we welcome several new students to our dojo,” he shouted in a superior tone. “For those of you who are new, I am Sensei Masako. Some of you may already have heard that the Emperor has been kidnapped by the ninjas. The dojo will be doing its best to help in any way possible. Be aware that this will NOT interrupt your training. Without further ado, let us begin to eat our meal.” Within ten seconds everyone was eating their food and talking to friends. My father ate and conversed with some of the sensei’s at the table but every now and then he would stare out into the forest. Something sinister is going on and I had a feeling that the kidnapped emperor was the least of our problems.

Damaged disc(s) in the lower back - what to do and what not ;)

I got diagnosed with a damaged L5 and L6 disc in my lower back about 8 years ago and I thought writing about my experience might helps others facing the same problems. Keeping your back straight when lifting or moving heavy things was a thing I already learned and followed during my school times and as you might have guessed it helped to keep my back healthy - at the expense of my knees... But the knees are a different story, today I want to help you understand lower back problems caused by damaged or bulging discs and how this will affect your life. For me it began with a little shock. One day I got out of bed, wanted to grab something I dropped and got stuck half way up. Knowing that there are some nerves that can cause the same issue and that a simple injection will fix me I called a cab to be dragged laying down on the back seat to my GP. As you might have guessed his diagnosis was a bit worse than what I wanted to hear... Many painful hours and some scans later it was confirmed that my L5 and L6 disk have collapsed on one side and started to push on the nerves next to it. Funny side not that I never really checked was that my doc said not everyone has a L6 disk... Anyways, as with most first "accidents" involving your lower back the so called recovery was long and painful. Sure the painkillers help to numb the worst, the anti inflammatory stuff covers some pain too but actually I did not want the full pain free package deal. Pain is the bodies way to let you know something is wrong, so I kept the pain medication at a level where I got that information when making a wrong move... The first 6 months I was literally confined to my bed, the shower and the toilet. I tried to keep a position with the least amount of pain for as long as possible and for obvious reasons was not too happy that my body not only required food intake but also the disposal of the waste products - getting out of bed and onto the toilet meant experiencing huge amounts of pain every time. But after those 6 months I started to adjust, to the pain as well as what my limited body was now capable of in terms of movement. Needless to say that all this time of not doing anything really meant my scale started to scream tripple digets at me one day... Luckily around the same time my pain levels went to a level that allowed my to walk around 500-600 at slightly slower speeds than normal before the pain got too much. My doctor also got quite concerned about my blood work and body weight recommending to loose a lot if I every intent to get back to a more normal life. So I started to walk several times a day, no matter how bad the weather was, just a bit up and down the street. The distance got longer, the fitness a bit better and the pain levels a bit lower too. Using my old weight lifting belt to keep the back supported helped me a lot during these times, especially when driving or doing housework. During those times I was still on 6-8 panedine forte tablets (paracetamol and codein) plus 2-4 tablets of 20mg oxicontin and not happy about the last anyway. Despite the added levels of pain I started to reduce the level of oxicontin and started to exercise more. My focus was getting the core muscles stronger and to get better support for my back. Also started riding my bike again, although I had to replace it for a bigger model to allow me a more upright position with less stress on the lower back. The kilos started to tumble very slowly but I was already quite proud when I got bak to 90kg. :( Good thing was that I got motivation to continue as every kg I lost and every little bit more on distance I got out of my walks and rides without getting too painful also meant that my average pain level went down too. Two years after it all happened I got rid of the oxicontin completely and reached the 80kg mark. My doc was happy too, my blood work looking good but of course he still suggested to loose a few more kg. Being able to move around again also meant being able to work again and with that came more food, less exercise and a lot more stress. I did manage to hold my 80kg but after about 6 months or working I noticed my back problems started to limit me again. My back belt covered for me and I was able to keep going a while longer but in the end I got hit by another attack on my back. The diagnosis was not good at all as now on top of the pain goind through the back and leg I also hab numbness and a feeling like ants crawl over the leg and chew on it every few mm. As with most lower back "revenges" this one only needed strong pain killers for a few weeks until I was back to something more normal in terms of pain and movability. Sadly the ongoing side effects did not go away the way they did the first time. This meant especiall finding the right position to sleep with the least amount of pain was becoming a nightmare on it's own. Either you got pins and needles keeping you awake, you lost your feeling in the leg to the point where it becomes useless or the pain in the back is just stabbing you all the time. Starting some projects here on Instructables kept my mind busy and gave me some welcome distraction from the daily routine. Eventually I manged to find a job again that allowed me to have enough different movements with only a bit of lifting so things started get back to normal. My doc put me on some amitriptyline to help with the pain at night and although it took some time to get used to the stuff it really started to help after about two weeks. The job was only for a fixed term but it gave me back some confidence that not all is bad or lost. Life went on and I actually manged to get down to just 75kg and only used some painkillers once or twice a week if it was really bad. Then, a few weeks back I started to notice that the top of my foot and the outside of my leg felt different to touch, especially in the shower with some brush or rough sponge. Not being happy already I agreed to some new scans to check if the discs started to cause problems or if the nerves are just inflamed. You might have guessed already, the scan confirmed that my two discs desintegrated further putting more pressure on the already suffering nerves. With the "help" of some quite strong anti inflammatory stuff, cortisone and other meds my doc managed to get me back to "normal" but he also informed me that this won't last forever. The current outcome (without surgery but more on that later on) I have two choices to keep going: a ) I continue with pain killers and other meds to keep the problems at bay. b ) I limit myself to basically not doing anything involving the movemnt of my lower back, keep to a strict calory intake and hope for the best. The first option won't do me any good in the long run except liver, kidney and digestive problems. The second option will allow me some sort of a normal life at the expense of never finding a job to support me again. So once again we soldier on knowing that it will only make things worse as giving up and relying on social services is no option for me. Hoping that you might just had your first encounter with lower back injuries and pain I will give some advise on the things that helped my most so that you might not have to suffer as much I did and still do. So read on please... Diagnosed with a damaged or bulged disc in the lower back - what does it acutally mean? If you check all the available images of the human skelleton you will quickly notice one thing: Our lower back is not really straight and not designed to carry a lot weight when it is put on the wrong way or direction. Noone with a sane mind would use a support beam shaped like that but the human body adapted to this problem caused by changing from using all four limbs to walking on just two legs. The muscles and tendons in our back work in such a way that they support the fragile construction of discs and bones that keep us upright. Sadly modern life, personal decisions and only too often a busy work shedule prevent us from using our body the wa we should. Be it too much lifting, being far too short for your weight or simply laziness the factors causing our muscle to degrade are too many to count. But once you are in the worst pain you ever felt and your doc tells you that there are damaged discs you suddenly wish you had it all done differently years ago - trust me, I have been there and I have done it ;) Or it might be like in my case that a healthy and fit person just cracks one or more discs for no obvious reason. Either way it means you have to change your life to be able to keep going. Pain killers help to ignore the problem and pretend all is good but they should be used with great care as most are highly addictive and the long term side effects are no fun either. The one thing you must never forget is although being a life sentence it must not mean you will be crippled forever! What can I do once it happened to help the pain and my sanity? Nerve pain is one of the worst pains there is and there are only two more or less working medications to deal with it. The first meds are opiates to literally numb the pain but due to source of the pain very high levels are required until the body adapted to deal with the wrong pain information. The second group of meds that offer help and that are often used together with pain killers are old sty anti depressants like the try-cyclic (was that right?) amitriptyline. Back in the days they were not really good for the advertised job but one of the common side effects was how they worked on the pain centers of the brain. In much lower dosages as used to treat depressions these meds help the brain to deal with the pain caused by the damaged or pinched nerves. As a long term solution they should be prefered over opiates so that the strong pain killers are only taken when really needed. If you are anything like me than not getting enough sleep over weeks on end will take a toll on your mood. So being able to sleep at least a few hours in one go is a real thing to aim for unless you prefer to harm your body with pain killers. What is there to help with the pain so you can sleep? I know that you now already think you tried it all and that nothing good comes out of here but keep reading as you might be surprised... The first thing that jumps into mind when it comes to sleeping is a bed - be it you by yourself or with a partner. And here also is the first point to improve! In many countries a bed for two persons has one bad feature: A single mattress! Any movement from the person next to you is transfered more or less onto your body - you don't want that! So if you own a big bid that you share with someone think about investing into a bed with seperated matresses and support frames. That brings us to the mattress itself. A lot of people think being soft and flexible is a prefered thing, not so much if you have back problems. You want enough support to keep the back straight without everything feeling like you sleep on wooden floorboards. Keep in mind though that when changing from soft matress to something much firmer you will need to adjust. Really the best option is to seek professional advise in a bedding studio or similar. And no, you don't have to go to the most expensive place to buy a mattress, you just try them out, get expert advise and use that new knowledge to find a suitable mattress to fit the budget. With no offence meant: If you are over the normal weight you really want to loose the excess and that means selecting a new matrress on your weight goal and not on your current weight! It is also good to have adjustable supports under the mattress itself, this way you choose a thinner and bit softer mattress but still get the firmness your back requires - again seeking proffessional advise on the right combinations is highly recommended here! Ok, your bed is sorted but still there is that nagging pain in certain positions or the tingling in your leg preventing you to go to sleep. Believe it or not but what you do before you go to bed affects how you feel when you hit the sack. So sitting like a bag full of water in front of your TV until just manage to crawl into bed won't do you any good. Same for having your dinner and hour or two before bedtime... What does help is to move your body and to burn a few kalories! If it helps you use a weight lifting belt but just a walk around the block with a little bit of bending and flexing will get the tension out of muscles. A nice partner giving you a proper massage might help too but I doubt you will get one every night ;) And before you start to complain: Yes, I know there are times where simply can't do any exersise as you will be happy to make it to the toilet or to make some dinner. For those times and especially during times of experiencing higher than normal pain level ther is something you can do to ease the pain. Some doctors will tell you but a lot of them wont: Cold actually helps to numb the pain and the symptoms like tingling, pins and needles or the constant stabbing when you made a slightly wrong move. But you need to apply the cold in the right way to get the benefit! The key here is timing. Using real ice in a suitable wrapper, so no vegetables or meat, you apply the cold where the damage is - not where the pain is! You want to cool down the area around the damaged discs for about 5 to max 10 minutes. Put the icepack back and repeat every hour! Nothing will happen after the first two or three round but then you will notice improvement - how much depends on the individual and extend of the damage of course. When I have bad days I usually start around mid-day and keep going every hour until either the pain is gone or it is time to drag myself to bed. The worst you can do is o apply heat! A warm (not hot!) bath can help to ease some muscular tension but hot packs or heat lamps will make your pain get worse quickly. Just imagine and inflammation somehwere else, the area is already hot and painful so you really don't want to add more heat, do you? ;) What can be done to keep mobile and improve? As said earlier the key is support for the damaged areas and of course a limitation in movements that put additional stress on the damaged dics - this includes weight, be it from your own body in terms of excess fat or simply be lifting things! You will have times of no pain and where you think you are 20 years younger again but never use that as an excuse to think your discs have improved! Once damaged they stay damaged and everything putting more stress on you dsic(s) will make things worse. A friend of mine loves to play golf - if you have back problems you want to find a different hobby! Coming from three digits I can tell you without being offensive in any way that being fat means having problems that you don't want to add to your list caused by a bad back! So like it or not you really need to loose all the excess you can find wobbling around your body! For me every single kg I lost was a step forward to being more fit and being able to more things for longer before my pain got too much. And no, there is no excuse for keeping those kilos if are able to leave the bed for more than a few hours. Turst me, you will feel better, need far less medication and like yourself much better once the benfits of less weight kick in! Exercise is the key to getting your life back to a more or less normal level! If you are a "first offender" than you have a good chance that a change of habbit and maybe job will make sure it stays a single incident and that you can have a pain free life after the initial recovery! Getting a higher core strenght and overall fitness level helps your body to heal but most importantly gives you the option to gain muscles where needed to support your back. You might think there is nothing you can do if you are in pain and can't really move anyway but if you do then you are wrong. I am not a personal trainer but I found a lot of ways to use my muscles without using my back for it... There is enough info on the web for exercise methods without any training gear and if you think "really hard" you might notice you can use a lot of positions to exercise your arms and legs without stressing you back ;) And even for the back you can do good without damage: If you lay flat on your belly you just slightly lift your arms and legs off the ground - this will need the support of the muscles in lower back! No need to actuall lift anything high, just enough to only slightly bend your back up - you might not even notice any bending at all. What you don't want is exercise like running, jogging or even contact sports, really nothing that might force your back to move more than what is possible without stressing your discs... Better fitness and more strenght means you will get better flexibility and movablity but never let that fool you into thinking the damage is gone! I can not stress enough than even if you don't need medication and feel fine a single wrong move can make all null and void! What are the options if despite loosing weight and excercise my pain is not going away or syptoms get worse? Well, we can ignore it, we can hope it all goes away but the sad reality for most is that sooner or later you reach the point where the damage is too much too handle. The first one to tell you that your lower back is now due for a pit stop is your foot. The pain might be more than what you ever experienced the pins and needles might drive you mad but as long as it just that you are fine, really :( For me it was during some light gradening when I got my "first hit" so to say. I brushed it off thinking I tripped over something that got kicked away while I struggled to keep my balance. A few days later I noticed that I had to put some extra efford to prevent my toes from scraping the floor while walking. It was there when I also realised that most of the feeling on top of my foot was gone. Same story for the outside of my calf by the way... For me, thanks to a non working medical system and no private health cover the story ends here... Since you might have more luck: Modern medicine has gone a long way when it comes to minimal invasive operations and they are the key to performing operations that otherwise would be impossible or require months of recovery. For the "treatment" of damaged discs in the lowest part of the spinal area the old conventional treatment was to fuse the bones together using some steel or titanium rods. To give the patient relief the dmaged disc was more or less mutilated to free the damaged nerve(s). Several weeks of bed rest and great loss in movement was the price to pay for less pain. Today we are much further and can use micro instruments to perform operations deemed impossible only a few years ago. One of the operations with the greatest and fastest recovery rates is actually quite smart if you think about it: A small portion of bone is removed to give more room for the nerve and to aid in the healing - without fusing the bones! The next step is remove the part of the disc that is bulging out - without removing the strong support layers around it, only the mashed up bits are taken away. The patient is literally pain free ( from the back pain) right after the operation. Healing takes about 2-3 weeks but by then even the pain from the cut bones will be gone. Some health insurers see these operations as a means to get a person back to work and into a normal life, so they support it. Others use simple math and decide pain killers are cheaper... In any case you should seek professional advice from your doc and health care provider before it is too late! Diagnosed and operated early can mean you get the option to have an almost normal life again, or at least a few years of being able to enjoy life much more than before the operation. There are of course risks involved and an opration might not be an option for every case but knowing your options and what form of treatment might be available for you can be reall life changing... Ok, but what's the worst that can happen to me if a simple operation is no longer an option? One of the first things you will notice after loosing control and feeling for your foot is a more or less contant need to go the toilet. Despite having an empty bladder or just using the toilet minutes ago you can develop the feeling that you really must go the toilet again. Sadly this is only the beginning... If things get worse you can loose control over your bladder and bowel. Simply put it means you no longer control the muscular tension required to keep you vital openings closed when required. Usually at this point your doctor will recommend to operate one way or the other. For you, if affected, this means you have to decide between the risk of an operation that might only last for a few months or years or wearing adult nappies... If you already had one or more operation or the damage to the disc(s) is too severe it can mean that there is no other option but to fuse the bones into place to prevent further damage and allow for some healing. But trust me, for your doc to even consider an operation you need to loose all the weight you can! What are my limitations after having my back bones fused together? Well, as it reads you will be fused together, meaning you level of movement will be severly limited. It also means you beep all the time at the airport security or when entering a court or other place with metal detectors - but that is the least of the worries I guess... The main problem after such operations is getting back to a life as normal as possible. You get a lot of help in rehab and will learn what you can and can't do, plus of course how to keep you fit despite these limits. Some people cope really good with the new limitations but others struggle a lot. This especially true if before the person was really active and doing a lot in terms of sport and outdoor activities. Learning to adapt to the changes allows you have many more years without too much pain or limitations. Sure, Golf is out of the question, playing soccer or riding a normal bike too but life goes on and being a part of it is always better than just looking at it through your bedroom window ;) In any case giving up should not be an option for you! No matter how bad it looks when the pain is too much, there are always more good days than bad days ahead of you! Go ahead, share your experience with back pain, what you do keep going and handle the pain. Share you information about what treatments helped you the most and share how you recovered to where you are now. Be an inspiration for those facing what we already went through! Real back pain based on nerve damage will only be understood by someone who experienced it - what did you do to make the people around you understand it? Whatever helped you might help someone wha just started to learn how to deal with damaged discs and back pain, so sharing is caring! ;)
