Guitar

Well all of you welcome to my little group, heres our first topic, Should there be an instructible about how to create an amplifier? I think so because they are always expensive to buy, to build one though would be fun as well as useful, now you tell me and everyone else your opinion.

headphones for a guitar?

About five minutes ago one of my friends brother told me my friend was annoying him by playing his electric guitar at 7:30PM as loud as he can so it got me to thinking, to make headphones that work on a guitar it couldn't be as simple a swapping the jack right? if i made the cassete player amp instructable and just plugged normal headphones into that, the headphones would work so only the guitar player could hear it right? my music teacher told me that plugging headphones into an amp was a bad idea for some reason so im just using that to try and make headphones for an amp another way

Phone guitar

Phone apps are creeping more into the musical space. Famous musicians have been seen using cell phones with apps to play in their shows. Steffest has combined multiple phones into a guitar and can be seen here playing the results. Now I want to see him add an iPad for the guitar body and make the entire thing touchscreen. via Make

Guitar Headphones

Im in need of help. My friend has a bass guitar but no amp. And instead of buying one he asked me to figure out a way to let him just plug in his headphones. After glancing around at all the instructables for portable guitar amps I hadnt seen one for just plugging in headphones. SO, I'm asking here in hopes of someone else knowing where an instructable is for this, because I can't find one.

Guitar recycling

My well-meaning parents bought me a half-size acoustic guitar as I was adding to my collection. Bad news is, it's useless. It not only has no adjustable truss rod but, as far as I can tell, no neck reinforcement whatsoever, so it's slowly turning itself into a slide guitar. The intonation is so far out that, despite all the useful guides, I despair of bringing it anywhere near something playable, even if I knew what key it was intended to be tuned to (it feels close at a G or an A, but it's still so far out it's crazy). Even if I could fix all of the above, the keys are so loose that three seconds of playing loosens the string anyway. Help! What can I use an unplayable guitar for? :D Should I strip it for parts? Should I turn that lovely sound box into a drum? Turn it into a table? I need inspiration! I'm the kinda gal whose favourite guitar was rescued from a sidewalk, so I don't want it to die; but despite its shape, it's not a guitar. :(

Guitar opinion? Answered

I am hoping to buy decent guitar as soon as I have the money. There are a few that I have looked at alot, but I am having a tough time deciding between them. The guitars? An Epiphone Wilshire ($400), a Fender Squier Jaguar ($300), and a Gretsch Resenator ($360) I would love to have any of the three, and Im interested in many types of music. The White Stripes, Primus, Jack White, Cage the Elephant, Nirvana, Cake, The Black Keys, Linkin Park, Pearl Jam, Tesla, Guns and Roses, and many more. I play both acoustic and electric and I am decent using a slide. Which would you choose? I hope to go to Guitar Center within a couple months to try them out. http://www.guitarcenter.com/Epiphone-Worn-1966-Wilshire-with-Tremotone-Electric-Guitar-106526072-i1819085.gc http://www.guitarcenter.com/Squier-Vintage-Modified-Jaguar-Electric-Guitar-107920662-i2518197.gc http://www.guitarcenter.com/Gretsch-Root-Series-G9200-Boxcar-Round-Neck-Resonator-107623480-i2370633.gc

Helpful Guitar Hints

Guitar soloing and improvisation is one of the most expressive types of guitar playing that a musician can learn. It is a showcase of precision, skill, technique, and creativity that blows the mind and leaves awestruck faces in every crowd.A lot goes into perfecting guitar improvisation and all the techniques that can be used in this style of guitar playing. Guitar improvisation requires dedication, patience, time, and practice, practice, practice. This is a very important tip that everyone can teach, even though it may seem redundant and not very advanced. It's wonderful how many people try to grow as musicians without perfecting their skills and practicing their craft daily.Another tip that can greatly better your guitar improvisation is to play along with a CD. Put on one of your favorite CDs and when there is a stop or a bridge somewhere in the song, strum a few chords or a scale in the key of the song over the music playing in the background. You can also learn the chords to the song and play some arpeggios over the changes in the song. Learning how to play arpeggios is a crucial skill to learn to improve your improvisation technique, and if you don't already know how to play them, you should learn them and put them in your arsenal of improvisational tools.Another great tip for guitar improvisation is to try playing chord scales. When you use this method you are simply using chords instead of scales and melodies. The main idea of this is that you are playing a scale with a chord connected to it.One great method to use when you're trying to improve your improvisation skills is to use guitar backing tracks. Guitar backing tracks are great for improvisation because it's like playing with a whole backing band, and allows you to improvise and put into practice all of your skills and tools in putting together awesome leads to go with the track. Playing along to a backing track will also help you to perfect your timing skills and will increase the enjoyment you get from playing along.Another great tip for guitar player to analyze there performance and to make their audience is to useGuitar TablatureIf you are a serious guitar student who has already mastered the basics of chordtheory and the basic skills of guitar playing, then you're ready.

Guitar Pedal Prototypes

Don't get me wrong, I love acoustic guitars... But I love a good crazily distorted guitar that almost sounds like a synth. Rage against the machine's guitarist Tom Morello epitomizes that wild sound for me. Most good bands have an instantly recognizable sound and one of the ways a guitarist can distinguish zer self is to use a unique set of pedals. Now you could go buy a set and find just the right setup for your taste... or you can build your own. Best part is, there's no soldering involved:Bevis Boardvia:Make

Music box concept + Guitar guts = Player Guitar

Don't know if this specifically needs to go in music but, whatever. for christmas i made my brother a (somewhat poorly constructed) lap steel guitar. seriously, it wasn't that good, but it worked and it was more of a "can i do this project" kind of thing, plus he has a friend who is an ACTUAL luthier so he's going to "redo it".... anywho, i made said guitar using zither pins for the tuning pegs and it got me to thinking. with the zither pins you could theoretcially have a guitar string of any length and use the pin to set that string to any given tone on any particular scale (say the functional length of the string was only 3 inches....you could still theoretically set the tune on that string to a semi permanent desired tone). so, with a bunch of short lengths of various guage strings you could create a guitar music box (probably more of a music barrel but, whatever). now, normal music box has the tone pins (not sure what they're called...but the tuned slivers of metal) stationary along one (or more) fixed planes and a revolving "picking" drum that strikes each pin to make the tone in the order that it needs to be in a piece of music. for whatever reason. so, combine these two ideas and you get a player guitar, or a guitar based music box, whatever. so, obviously this could be acoustic or electric. my personal preference is to lean towards electric, so that's where the question comes in. a normal guitar pickup has 4, 6, or whatever magnets fixed within it's coils so that you can pickup the signal from 4, 6, or whatever strings that are strung paralell(ish) across the guitar. for the music box concept to work (as opposed to a true player guitar that plays across the strings) the individual string pieces (that are all individually tuned etc) wouldn't be able to be parallell to each other like a normal guitar. they'd either be in line on the same plane or spaced out in odd ways (i've got an odd concept for the actual construction...where the strings do the moving and the "strummers" stay put). so, does a single magnet pickup exist? that could just be wired up into the rest of a normal electric guitar's circuitry? or would i have to build such a thing from scratch (and subsequently how would i do that)? would a normal electric guitar's circuitry be able to work the same with more than 6 pickups in play (thinking of a cheap one from a pawn shop...that's what i built the slide guitar from)? also, taking song suggestions and subsequent individual string tuning plans *i do know that there are "better" ways to make a self playing guitar that uses the normal guitar form factor and robotics and such....but this seems more fun. plus, i might make it into a wind powerd thing...electric guitar windchimes anyone?
