headphones for a guitar?

About five minutes ago one of my friends brother told me my friend was annoying him by playing his electric guitar at 7:30PM as loud as he can so it got me to thinking, to make headphones that work on a guitar it couldn't be as simple a swapping the jack right? if i made the cassete player amp instructable and just plugged normal headphones into that, the headphones would work so only the guitar player could hear it right? my music teacher told me that plugging headphones into an amp was a bad idea for some reason so im just using that to try and make headphones for an amp another way

Headphone Question

How are headphones/earbuds powered? Is power sent through the audio port? If so, how many volts go through? This question how always wondered me. Because earbuds are basically mini speakers and speakers require power, so shouldn't headphones need at least a little power?

Guitar Headphones

Im in need of help. My friend has a bass guitar but no amp. And instead of buying one he asked me to figure out a way to let him just plug in his headphones. After glancing around at all the instructables for portable guitar amps I hadnt seen one for just plugging in headphones. SO, I'm asking here in hopes of someone else knowing where an instructable is for this, because I can't find one.

Headphone idea

I have a pair of headphones as seen by the freaky looking girl below (I got it off the site, that sure as hell ain't me). These are exactly the same model as what's in the link, but theres a couple things I wanna do to better suite me. First off, I think these are intended for kids? They don't sit on my head normally because the head strap is a little short (any ideas?) but they sit with the headband hanging off the back of my head just as good. They may seem fairly "crappy" and the speakers they included with them are shitty, just normal headphone speakers, maybe a little larger than average but nothing special. I wanted to up-grade the speakers with something maybe a little bigger (the ones in here sound pretty okay tho). I tried to see if these small surround sound speakers I had would fit, and the magnet is about 1cm too deep so that's out of the question unless I want to remove a whole lotta plastic with my dremel. So I had a second idea, what about using pager/cell phone motors (would ps2 controller motors work? I have lots of those) and either having them receive the signal directly which I'm sure wouldn't do much unless it was a small pager motor with a small voltage requirement. But, what about a simple circuit, kind of like this mod which uses the sound output of a PSP to drive a circuit that uses "seperate" voltage (ie battery pack) to drive the motor to the sound. My general idea is to have a pair of headphones that feel like you have a giant subwoofer strapped to your head. I know it can be done, I know the circuit isn't that complicated, but probably has enough parts, can someone help me get a jump start on this? I'm sure modifications to a pair of headphones is fairly straightforward. Also any suggestions on a new type of speaker that I could install would be appreciated.

Old headphones made into speakers

Hey guys. If you want to cur the crap skip to the third paragraph. So I found this speaker in a voice recorded message greetings card thing and it's pretty loud for it's size, so I decided to put it in place of a headphone on my old iPod headphones. I Took apart the right bud and soldered the + - wires to the speaker, and it worked first time. My problem is now that some songs have say guitar coming through the right speaker and bass through the left. I decided to try and mount the speaker below the split. The thing is, I'm not sure which are the + and - wires. I know that speakers work by changing between + and - to make the diaphragm move, but when I mounted the speaker where the ear bud was, it was easy as there were 2 wires. Below the split there are 4. So my question is. Does it matter what 2 wires I pair together to solder at one port? The colours are Blue, Red, Green, and Red/Green intwined.

Audio Spectrum Analyzer Headphones

Hi, I was wanting to try to make some custom headphones. The headphones themselves wouldn't really be anything special but what is on the sides is what i'm wanting. On the sides I was wanting LEDs in a circular fashion working as a spectrum analyzers to what ever music I play. A visual idea of what i'm wanting is the GIF below, the way the analyzer is working in the background is how id want it on the headphones except in the opposite direction where the bars go outward.I also would like to have it to where it had a switch where i could turn the analyzer off but still listen to music without it running. I don't care on how it works i just want it to not be too expensive and i want it to where it could look a little professional and clean

Broken Headphones Oh Noes

Hey, what's up everyone, I'm new.  Hopefully I'm not breaking any rules. So I'm sure you've gotten tons of these already, but, I have a pair of broken earphones.  Two pairs actually.  On both, the right side is broken (as in, no sound). I took them apart and found that on one of them the coating of the wire seems to have melted or something (there was sticky black stuff all over the inside), and on the other the diaphragm thingy is detached. So at first I thought there were frayed wires somewhere, but the electromagnets on both still work (I tested them with a piece of metal, the attraction was still really strong), so I figured that there must be something wrong with the diaphragm (what are those things called?  the plastic cone thingies?). My question is:  Is there a way to test the diaphragm thing, and if that's the problem, is it fixable? Thanks very much in advance.

DIY Headphone/Speaker switcher

Hi. I want a box where I can select whether I was the signal to go to either my headphones or my desktop speakers. I know I can just get a 3.5mm splitter cable, but I'd prefer to be able to switch of either one when it's not being used. To get around having to use several switches, I thought of this. If you think (like me) that it'll work, could you please let me know. Thanks, wbr

Any headphones that are durable, cheap-ish, and have good sound quality? Answered

So I like listening to music on end, for hours at a time.  However, the problem with that is that the headphones break down.  I buy noise-cancelling headphones from walmart for anywhere between 15-25 dollars, but they break within a few months after I buy them.  The apple headphones that have come with my iPod nano have lasted me for 2 and a half years without breaking, but the sound quality is not as good. If it helps, both of the noise cancelling headphones I bought have a problem with the wire (I sometimes can squeeze sound out of them if I turn the wire the right way, otherwise no sound comes out) So is there a specific brand that you would recommend that lasts longer than a few months, has good sound quality, and can cancel noise at around 20-30 dollars? EDIT- It seems I must include the question of Availability with my purchase.  I can not buy online, and the only local stores I can buy from are Target, WalMart, Office Depot (maybe) and Best Buy.

How can I fix broken headphones? Answered

Ok, so I have 2 headphones, both of them can only play through one of the 2 earbuds, but while the ipod earbuds can play through the right headphones, the noise canceling ones can play through the left. I know its a problem with the wires, because i can still squeeze sound out of the dead earbud if I adjust the wire right. How can I fix without buying a new pair?

How do I convert a pair of aeroplane headphones to be used with a normal 3.5mm jack? Answered

The pair of headphones are from QANTAS business class. They have 3 prongs: 2 x 3.5mm and one 2.5mm The two 3.5mm prongs are for left and right sound but the 2.5mm is (i think) for power for the headphones and the noise cancelling ability. I'm not sure how to incorporate the 2.5mm prong into a normal jack or whether it's even possible. I want to use these on an mp3 player or if the power needed is too big then on a laptop. Rewiring a boombox headphone output to be an Ipod input?

I'm rewiring an old boombox to be able to play music from an ipod. Since it doesn't have an input anywhere on it, I've decided to rewire the headphone output to act as an input for my ipod. I've already gutted the tape player. The headphone out is attached to a circuit board which then connects to the main board, which sends the music to the speakers. I will change the old headphone input wiring to go to the old tape input(same wires). The only problem I can forsee is the circuit board which connects the headphone jack to the wires. Will it keep trying to send music out, or will it let the Ipod's music pass back into the main board? Connection diagram: Ipod -> Double-male audio cable -> Headphone jack -> Circuit Board -> 6 Black wires -> Main board's tape player input -> Speaker
