Question by xadevox
I built a parabolic microphone using spare parts. (One stainless steel wok, one dowel rod, one lapel microphone, one snair drum stand, and some scrap metle. Along with some shrink tubing and an old broke toy now blocking the back end of the microphone. I grabbled an as seen on TV 'Listen Up' personal amp. I removed the microphone built in and replaced it with a 1/8 jack. When I connect it to the parabolic microphone instead of amping the sound it picks up RF radio stations. An easy listening R&B; station to be exact. How do I fix that or can it be fixed?

Hello, This question is aimed at anyone who has used a gopro near guns. . . . If I make a chest or head mount for a gopro hero, to use on a shooting range does anyone know if the gunshots are likely to damage the microphone ? If not, is the recording likely to sound like a gun shot or will it be just a clipped phut. Thanks

Ok, so I have a portable phone and would like to create some sort of hands-free speaker/mic for it. I'm not sure how to go about doing it and I'm not very internal-electronic-savvy (i.e. chipsets, soldering etc). Ideally, I would assume it should be connectible via the 2.5mm headphone jack. I have an old 2.5mm headset. It's got an ear bud and flexible arm microphone and connects via 2.5mm jack. I should also have some old computer speakers lying around somewhere. I assume that's all I should need. I would like the microphone to be part of the device and be functional, but not sure if it will pick up my voice from a far distance. I'm not too concerned about looks/style, but would be a nice addition. Functionality is my first concern right now, although I do have a few old Fossil watch containers that I could put the speaker(s) in and some sort of dock or rest for the portable phone would be nice as well. If soldering is involved, I will need very detailed instructions. Thanks again! I hope someone can help me. If someone knows of a fairly inexpensive product, I would be willing to buy (since I'm not very soldering-savvy as I said above), but I think this would be an interesting project to build.

I'm trying to make it very cheap, loud enough, and self-contained, meaning the batteries, speaker, etc. would fit in the body of the guitar. Best I can think of is a battery-powered karaoke machine. I also looked into a voice changer toy (too low quality sound) and a bullhorn (too expensive). Frankly, My dream version would involve uploading virtual amp effects to a PSP and plugging a mic into it. That would be worth the price. What I'll settle for, though, is a loud enough guitar (with a body made of cardboard and wood).

I'm wanting to build these microphone props for a play , but this Instructable is really vague, only providing a loose list of components and no sizes. The one thing I can't figure out for myself, however, is what the outer circle is made of. I figured those curved bits were PVC, but a search through Lowes didn't turn up anything that looked like that. What are those things?

I'm just curious about the people out there who are interested in ambient/experimental music and creating their own. What programs/microphones do you use? What things do you find yourself often recording? Do you manipulate the way your recordings sound to achieve a certain sound? I've just started recording with Bi-Naural Mics. When I want to do field recordings, I use I mini disc recorder. I offer all of my works free to listen to on Jamendo (maybe I should make an instructable on that site)!

I would like to use a Turtle Beach HPA2 headset for my Xbox 360 for true 5.1 sound. However, it is configured for PC usage and needs some extra stuff to work with a console. I have everything sourced except for a way to hook up the microphone. You can purchase a SteelCity Xbox Headset Connector but that seems like a waste of money if a cheap adapter will do. It seems like you can use the existing HPA2 microphone cord with 3.5mm TRS/mini-stereo jack (I'm assuming it's mono, but it could be stereo), attach it to a 2.5mm reducer, and then plug it into the Xbox controller. The existing Microsoft headset has a stereo jack, but that's because it has headphones as well and needs a separate channel for that. I'm not sure how the two (mono) or three (stereo) conductors are situated on both the Xbox socket and the HPA2 plug. I would assume the HPA2 microphone plug would be standard, but I'm thinking that the Xbox headset is unusual/proprietary as both the sound output and sound input are transmitted through one cord/plug as opposed to two for most PC headsets. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TRS_connector https://www.instructables.com/id/Use-your-awesome-PC-Gaming-Headset-with-an-X-Box/

My friend, Sue, has a voice pedal that has hundreds of voices you can use to spice the songs you sing. Her brother used it once to do 'Alvin and chipmunks' just to have a little fun. While I was sitting there listening to her I was trying to figure out how that works. Her brother doesn't have a high pitch voice, it's actually pretty deep. It's not like he put a cloth over the microphone to muffle the sound or use a different voice.

I've always loved recording my music onto computers or cassettes and it's always been a little dream of mine to put one or two of them onto a homemade vinyl record. Obviously this would be very lo-fi but it seems like it'd still be a fun project. Anyone know if this is possible or if they've done something similar? Way I would think it could be done is to reverse the wiring in side a record player into a microphone of some sort and replace the needle with a razor blade with a blank sheet of the certain type of vinyl?

Design wouldI am sorry for how disorganised my ideas are but please bear in mind that it was at about 1:35 a.m that I typed this. I have an idea for a hahandledame system that would use sd memory cards as cartridges and would use two screens one would be a touch screen while the other would be a normal screen. For inter system communication I think that an ad-hock wireless web could be used like ninintendoid for the DS system. It would of course have onboard speakers but it would also have an onboard microphone for audio input, It would also have the apappropriateacks for external speakers and microphones on it. The handhandledld also have a mini usb port for charging and communications purppurposeswell as a female usb port for similar reasons though It would also be used as an input for external gamepads and usb flash drives. for the internal memory it would use compact flash memory cards to hold it's operating system and inernainternalare like a chat system and a simple non tabed web browser. for the operating system I thought that it could use linux since it is such a small compact operating system and doesn't need a whole lot to run. Now as far as external design goes I was thinking that a clamshell clamshellld probably be best for it. please tell me if any of this sounds improbable or downright impossible but please keep it clean.

I am a musician, so I've been talking about guitar amplifiers, tubes, microphones and all kinds of gear for over 20 years. I've never really gotten that much into PA's, so I know nothing about speakers, heads, mixers, power amplifiers, etc. Now, I'd like to build my own powered PA speaker. I have zero experience with building anything that involves electronics. I'm not a dummy. I know Ohm's law, and I believe I can handle the physics of electronics, no problem. I just do not know where to start. Schematics for power audio amplifiers? Where does one find them, and how do you read schematics. These are the things I need to know. Let me preface this by saying... I do not expect to build a top-of-the-line PA speaker. I don't even expect to build something that would be considered crappy. I just want to know the theory, and where to start. Anyone got any help? Thanks!

I've worked with LEDs and things before, using Instructables, but don't know how to use formulas related to that. But now I want to do a large scaled project, by leaping off the bridge, and having no clue what I'm doing. I'd like to build a robotic human head, a women, that uses a webcam for face recognition, a microphone for speech recognition, and a robotic jaw, to move to the speech. SO, first, what programs can I use for the face recognition, and how can I use my computer for this, with out needing to use my computer as a permanent piece (A.K.A: A plug in, so I can use her when I feel like.) Two, how can I use the webcam for face recognition, programs. And three, not entirely needed, is a moving jaw, to match the rhythm of speech, if possible. BUT, I really DON'T want to spend money on those programs. A lot to ask, but can someone answer with a detailed explanation. Please don't show me this link: https://www.instructables.com/id/Making-an-Android-For-less-than-30/ No offence to the author, but I couldn't understand how it works, because it lacked detail on programs, and ect.

Hey all! I recently started a gaming show on my Youtube channel after being inspired by the likes of Jontron, PBG, Egoraptor, Game Theory and a few others. I want these to be as good as they can, and are made to a professional standard (in my opinion), with HD footage from both games and live action shots (courtesy of a camera I won in an instructables competition!), and the commentaries themselves are recorded with a professional studio microphone with a pop shield. Anyway, there are 2 episodes out so far, and I would love to hear your feedback on them! The sonic one was the first one released, and I got a lot of feedback on that which I tried implementing in to second one (Animal Crossing). TL;DR I'd love your feedback for this new series I'm attempting, and I hope you enjoy the videos! :-) LATEST EPISODE: EPISODE ONE (sonic the hedgehog for the Sega Genesis/Megadrive) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYTz0XOIhE4

Hi there! I recently found two old sony headphone speakers, but i can't seem to get any sound out of them. It's a standard L/R speaker set that was enclosed into each ear piece. The odd thing is though that there are 8 solder points on the speaker pieces. One which is black blobbed and two that are white blobbed (i'm assuming it's to prevent shorts). Two wires are connected to two of the solder points (they don't seem insulated though...) I've tried various connection methods to make them produce any kind of sound, but nothing happens. I'm assuming they still work because they look intact, but...well any ideas? I don't have any expertice with audio equipment, but i do have basic electronics experience... I know it's kind of an odd question, but i'd really like to use these speakers and i wanted to make sure i wasn't doing anything wrong. Basically i've been trying to connect various music players to a mini jack port using a microphone mini jack cable (seems to work for all other purposes) and then tried to connect the speaker wires to the jack port solder points (in various ways).I'm probably going to feel really stupid as the answer is probably really simple x3 I hope it makes sense!i should probably specify that the main problem is that i can't get any audio output from them, aka. they're silent no matter what i hook them up to

Hi, I'm attempting to put together something that is conceptually simple -- making a splitter for the 3.5 mm 4 pole audio jack so that one end supports a mic and the other a pair of headphones. I'm doing this because I want to hook up a better quality mic than found in the store-bought iphone headsets. However, after putting it all together, I just can't get it to work with my ipod. I've followed these pinouts (where 1 is the tip and 4 is the base): 4-pole jack 1. Left Audio 2. Right Audio 3. Ground 4. Microphone 3-pole jack 1. Left Audio 2. Right Audio 3. Ground Ive verified that all the connections are good using a multimeter. But when it comes down to actually recording with my ipod, I can't get the line in to work. Has anyone does anything like this before? Any ideas what might be going wrong? Is is it possible that measurements on the 4 pole jack isn't standardized and that the one I have doesn't actually fit the ipod correctly? Perhaps I'm completely wrong about how to connect the wires. So just in case, this is what I did: Line-in: Pinout (P/O) 1 and P/O 2 ---> P/O 4 (on 4-pole) P/O 3 --> P/O 3 on 4-pole (on 4-pole) Line-out: P/O 1 --> P/O 1 (on 4-pole) P/O 2 --> P/O 2 (on 4-pole) P/O 3 --> P/O 3 (on 4-pole) So yep, that's it. Any help is much appreciated : )
