Cataloging School Papers

I spontaneously decided to catalogue every paper I get/do in school this year. I've run some tests with tesseract, a OCR program, and its decent. Except... I don't have a scanner... I'm thinking of giving it up, unless someone else would like to also try it out. If so, I'll put effort into procuring a scanner, or figuring a way to emulate one with a camera. Any random thoughts on this?

School Video Tips

In my reading/gifted/advanced class, we are supposed to make a documentary showing some of our community's problems. We also have to show how we plan to fix them, too. (I'm working alone)In language arts, we were put into groups to come up with some advertisement for a fictional business or project. It cannot be an existing product or business, either. We have 5 people in our group, and have chosen to use a clothing store as a thing to advertise. So that is two videos, a commercial, and a documentary (we are studying persuasive techniques). I wanted to do a good job on these, so does anyone have any tips? Any tips would do, from lighting to tips on acting. I like making movies, and below are some of my quick videos I made, for Youtube. This one took me about 15 minutes, so it is kinda crappy: Hope you liked them!

Religion discrimination in my school...

Hey guys, what's up? Let me get straight to the point. There's a really beautiful and nice transfer student in my school, but everybody picks on her 'cause she's a Buddhist. The majority of the kids in my school are Muslims, and they hate indifference. At first, they just picked on the Buddhist girl, but they started to diss Christians, Catholics and agnostics. I really hate religion discrimination, so I want to do something about it. The problem is, in my school, if you want to be one of the cool kids, you have to go with the flow, and if I just tell random bullies off they will mark me as one of the very few uncool outcasts. So yeah, I need advice. Thanks in advance.

Do you think this is fair?

So I have 2 friends who got in a fight about a week ago, after school, and off campus.  Someone videoed it, and put it on their facebook account.  One of the fighters got suspended for school for a week for the fight, despite it being after school, and not on campus. Do you personally think this is an unreasonable punishment, or is it?  What do you think of this situation? I want to hear your opinions here, and encourage a good discussion.

How many times have you changed your major?

Or, if you're out of school, how many times did you change it during school? At first, I thought maybe I'll do biology. Then it was CIS. Then I thought hmmm... English. Then Psychology. I've finally ended up in the Health field and I love it. I was going to do Public Education... but it seems quite unattainable now and I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed. I don't think it's something I can do while working full time. Plus... I'm really not getting along with my epidemiology classes. So now I'm leaning towards being a physical education teacher or a personal trainer. (Exercise science.) And yet I would still rather spend my time building things. :P

Any suggestions for colleges to help me advance a career in film/editing?

This is more about my decisions later down the road in life than it is my current interest in editing and filming.  I've been doing some research in colleges that will help me get a major in film and video production and I've narrowed my choices to a few.  I'm not going to list them here, since I want some community input on this and I don't want the response to be biased based on my list.  What colleges do you think will give me the best, most hands-on, most fun education in this subject, as well as be the best for when it comes to getting a job in the industry?  I can do as much research on this as I need to, but what I think matters to me the most at this point is other people's opinions.  I'm more likely to try or consider something if friends recommend it, and you guys are always a thoughtful community.  Thanks in advance!

How to Survive School: A Never-ending thread of tips, tricks and (coff coff) comments

We all went to school sometime, right? I bet more than half of you are still in school. School School Schooooooooool. We all hate it. We all know it. And yet, we still go there. It's like death, but without dying right? Yeah. Actually, no. I went a bit over the top, but it's bad. I'd rather be here, making and sharing instructables than there, doing algebra. So, what I'm trying to say is: SCHOOL IS UNAVOIDABLE BUT IT CAN BE EASIER! That's our motto here and we're STICKIN' to it! (Unless someone comes up with a better one. >.>) So, thanks guys! I'll be posting the rules, guidelines and how to become a "School Basher". I'll let you know EVERYTHING. Thanks.

Gifts for teachers

It's that time of year again, end of the Summer term, and for a lot of kids it's their last few days in school. #2 Son's teacher runs the school's gardening club, so we bought her a trowel.  He wrote a message on the blade, and I dremelled it through to the bare metal*. What are you (or your kids) making for their teachers? Post a picture here, if you don't mind looking like a teacher's pet... *We also wiped over the bare metal with 3-in-1 oil to slow down the rust, since we'd exposed the metal.

My idiotic dad doesn't think my grades are good or at least above average. What do you think?

So yeah, I got expelled from school on the last week, but the school decided to be nice and give me my report card. I personally think I did OK, some of my friends and teachers even praised me for it, but my perfectionist father lashed his anger at me to no end. Check these out:(Note: The passing is 2 out of 6, my school's standards aren't really that high)English: 5 out of 6Math: 4 out of 6Science: 4.5 out of 6Indonesian: 6 out of 6Physical Education: 6 out of 6Technology: 5 out of 6Social Studies: 4.5 out of 6So yeah, I know right, WTF. I even got an award for 6th best 7th grader overall (there are 34 7th graders in my school) on the award ceremony the week before I got expelled. As I said before, my friends and teachers praised me for this, but my dad insists that its very average. I tried telling my dad that this is actually pretty good and I'm one of the best off and that more than 5 kids went to summer school because they failed more than two subjects. But he wouldn't listen and used that stupid don't compare yourself to them excuse to screw out my arguments. So yeah, tell me what you think & any advice on how to lower my dad's perfectionist standards would be greatly appreciated.

Just HOW contraversial is this really? (Also: The Dunkis's Flat knex pistol review.)

I know this subject has been brought up before, but I'm the first one to actually have video documentation on this topic to my knowledge:  While I'm at it I might as well review TD's Flat knex pistol because I don't feel like making a separate topic for that: Design- 7/10.  It succeeds at being compact and flat but this results in some tradeoffs, such as a tiny handle.  Bullet lock does not work too well, the ammo falls off given a good shaking. Range- 6/10.  About 25 feet with oodammo, with 2 #64's.  Any more bands, and I have problems pulling the trigger.  I'm gonna go easy on this rating because it's a compact gun for showing off. Comfort- 7/10.  Sure the handle is flat, but it's also tiny and pretty hard to grip if you have larger hands.  Also the pin tends to hit my hand a bit if I'm not careful due to this. Innovation- 8/10. It's the first truly flat knex gun, but it also sacrifices functionality. Trigger- 8/10.  It blocks near the back of the barrel, but the part you pull breaks easily with more than 2 bands.  It's comfortable though and the spacers don't fall off. Overall- 7/10.  It's a novelty show-off but nothing too powerful.  Great for stealth if you ever needed to hide it.

I think Florida is ruled by a mad king.

I just heard a story on the news that one of the local school districts will be ending summer vacation two weeks early. When school starts is codified by law and the only way for a school to receive an exemption to open early is to be an "academically high achieving school". Does this make sense to anyone? Schools that are doing good (as defined by a remarkably stupid standardized test) get more time to teach, whereas schools that perform poorly get less time. I can't really understand that reasoning. I've worked in public education, and I'll never understand the reasoning behind anything they do.and as an aside.Florida, come to play ball at the beach, stay because you've been imprisoned for playing ball at the beach. ~sigh~Wanted to add one more thing, The brevard county transit system is names "Space Coast Area Transit" AKA "The SCAT" and their website is ridescat.com. If you have no idea why I'm mentioning this, consider yourself lucky.

My student loans got screwed up! It should be fixed now, but won't know for ten days (at the most, they said), scary, what with bills and tuition to pay too. Add to that two exams (Kinematics and ceramic materials) and a presentation and a senior design report all in that time period. And my wife's so upset about the loans she's refusing to speak to me. I HATE group work.

HATE HATE HATE!It is really the one thing I dread about school. More than anything. It makes me want to pull my hair out. It is a requirement in Kentucky schools that you have a group assignment in each class and it makes my life a living hell.I always end up doing all the work and I really don't like other people getting the same grade as me for doing nothing! For example - I am in a group with five other people right now, 3 of which are athletes. They can never do anything. They constantly say they're busy. They decided that we should do our outside work tomorrow, right before I have to go into work. And as if that's not stressful enough, none of them actually mentioned doing the work we need to do before we go out and do assessments. The pre-assessment work is very involved - we have to do six physical activity assessments on elementary school kids, with 3 criteria that should be met for each assessment, as well as making up data collection sheets for each assessment. We also need to get our assessments OK'd by the teacher before we go. So now I'm sitting here stressing out wishing that I could just do this project myself and ease the pain. I emailed the teacher and let him know what was going on, and none of my group mates have emailed me back yet.I think I'm going to go make grumpy faces in the other room and get off the computer. :P

Anyone else in midterm slump mode?

If so, let's whine about it together. :D I'm ready for the semester to be over. I think I have a little too much on my plate this year. I have to go to a big conference next Friday, and I have so many papers and presentations coming up that I want to scream. The only class I really care about is A & P - and that's making me suffer in my other classes because I'm not studying for them as much. But of course, I'll be procrastinating instead of doing something right now to combat my anxiety. Sort of like this five page statistics midterm that I'm working on right now... which I've had a week to do. It's due at 4:30. :P

How to start a High School Radio Station?

With some friends at high school we have started a radio club. We are currently just streaming over the internet. I'm interested to know how complicated it actually is to broadcast over the FM radio. I know its possibly to receive a low power broadcast much easier but I still don't know how expensive that would be and difficult to acquire. I'm sure its a bit out of reach but i do know other high schools broadcast.

IMPORTANCE OF FORESTRY AND GARDENING FOR AFRICAN SCHOOL CHILDREN

In The Gambia all schools can participate in a tree nursery competition.  As the children are learning how to grow saplings for reforestation or for having fruit trees in the village, this is a very important activity in their education.  A class in Sambel Kunda village was introduced to the way a tree nursery can be set up, using seeds of the nearby baobab trees, planting them in cans, cups or poly pots.  This is one of the different aid projects contributing to the sustainable development of their village.
