Distance a 12g CO2 cartridge can launch a...?

What would you say the maximum distance a 12g CO2 cartridge could launch a ~12oz cylinder? The cylinder can be adjusted be top/bottom heavy or have its weight increased all around. The design of the barrel would (VERY) roughly look like the image at the bottom.  The cartridge would be in a housing unit at the butt of the launcher.  It would be set it off in a to-be-determined way, shooting out the cylinder(2 2/5inch diameter, 8 inches long, ~12 oz) that would be resting in front of it.

Opinion: in a postapocalyptic scenario, what kind of crazy weapon would you build?

Sketches would be quite handy.  I am planning on using your ideas as weapons for characters in a film project. Thanks in advance

What should I build?

At the moment, I don't have many good and innovative ideas to put into a K'nex gun. Can you give me some concepts and ideas of what I should build? Please don't give suggestions about making models of real guns. Also, if possible, please try to include a sketch of your concept.

Modular Furniture Parts (or Legos for Adults)

I've been considering building more flat pack furniture (I'm sick of moving around awkward cheap crap made of MDF or particle board) and I've been thinking of maybe making some kind of modular parts that could be configured in different ways to become different pieces of furniture. Does anyone know if such a thing already exists? Also one of my sketches involved building frames out of posts and cross pieces with some surfaces built from strips of wood suspended on metal rods. I was wondering about the feasibility of making something like that. I realize I'm sort of babbling here so I'm attaching an image from my sketches. Does this make any sense? What could these supports be made of? Originally I liked the idea of using metal for the contrast in materials, but I don't have a metal shop and I think getting them fabricated would be expensive. If anyone has any input, let me know. It would be cool to have an open source modular furniture system (well I think so).

How Do You Design Your Knex Guns?

There are lots of innovative Knex guns out there. But how did you come up with the idea? Please share your story and methods! -Did you try endlessly to make something work or purely by accident did you come up with a great idea? -Do you draw diagrams or sketches before design, or do you just rip out your tub and start building Knex ? -Any particularly interesting stories behind a gun design? Please share!

Doors and WIndows Automation

Hello, I am trying to automate the windows and doors in our barn using NEMA  stepper motor and Lead screw and would like to exert around 20 Kg force for opening or closing. The windows are fairly old and made of wrought Iron. I am wondering if somebody can advise and help me selecting the motor (based on torque) and the appropriate diameter of the Lead screw for this instance.  The idea being that when the lead screw rotates, the ball nut flange moves left or right and pushes the connecting rod out or in thus opening or closing the window I have attached a rough sketch what I had in mind and please pardon me for any mistakes. Many Thanks Ash

K'nex Concepts 13

Spiral Drum Mag: Drum mag with two rods that rotate in one direction to push rounds to the outside of the spiral and into a firing chamber. -by Oblivitus Layered Drum Mag: A drum mag with multiple layers that fill the entire space within the drum which both rotates with an elastic and is pushed up by an elastic. When the outer layer is emptied of rounds, the drum moves up and the next layer begins emptying. This layer changing would be achieved by making the rounds press upward against a flat surface on the gun. -by Oblivitus These concepts have also been posted to: https://www.instructables.com/id/Knex-Concepts/

Want to feel *really* small and insignificant?

Maybe you have heard of the "Tree of Life"? It's an old idea, with the first version being sketched by Darwin. There's a new (ish) one out.  I saw rough copies last year, but the reference pages of Dawkin's latest book led me to this web page. The image of the Tree there is, officially, "simplified", but still contains 3000 species, so it has a convenient "you are here" marker (second image, plus PDF file). Apparently, to see it properly, you have to print it out at a size of four and a half feet or more... The tattoo is on the back of Clare D'Alberto, who is working on her Ph.D. in biology at the University of Melbourne, but I'd love to see what the Makers here could do with the original image?

Children's Bed from PVC

Hello out there, I'm thinking of building a bed from PVC pipe for my 2 1/2 year old so I can move his one year old sister into his crib.  I'm doing some rough sketches of how i want it to look (and I don't have a scanner or the skills to do it in Sketchup) and I was wondering if the community could help me figure out a few things.  If it doesn't have the the following criteria helping me out my wife may not let me know do it.   First is it has to be weight bearing enough to hold at least one adult on the bed with him if we lay down with him.  Two strong enough for him to jump on.  Third; cost effective!  With all the connections it can add up really quickly and I'm wondering if I should just bite the bullet and buy him a bed and skip the hero dad bit. Thoughts?

SEEKING: I need a safe way/fx rig to explode a watermelon on a tv show...? Answered

Hi gang, I'm working on a show and I need to make a live audience believe that their 'telepathic psychic powers' have made a watermelon explode. I can build a booth with a lexan/plexiglass window so that watermelon doesn't spray the audience, this will also allow me to hide special fx rigs in it. I've done a somewhat similar rig before where I made the watermelon fall unnoticed through a trap door while a nozzle simultaneously sprayed watermelon guts against the plexi (so it looked like it exploded but didn't really). This time I'd really like to make it blow up.  I have a pyrotech license and have access to some basic explosives, but I think I would prefer to explore compressed air-based explosions. Anyway, any ideas would be appreciated. Please find a rough sketch attached. Many thanks! DAZU

How to make a 5 channel Vu meter (equalizer)

Hey guys, I'm planning on building a sound equalizer display aka Vu Meter, with 10 segment LED. My idea is to make a central sound system with analog I/O for 5.1, with three stereo amps DIY kits, each one for Front (LR), Back (LR) and Sub/Central. I've been using a 2.1 Logitech since my Samsung 5.1 home theater died, and its not enough.  At first, I though about buying a new 5.1 system, but my budget is not enough right now, and as I always loved to build myself, I though, why not? In resume, its a central with volume control, LED to indicate volume output, and 5 rows of 10-segment LED for graphic equalizer. I'll attach an image with the sketch of the frontal look. Its not final, but it may be enough. Now the problem: My knowledge about this sound frequency area is pretty poor. I can't figure out how to make each LED Segment for an specific hertz. I'd like to divide it into 60Hz, 230Hz, 910Hz, 3kHz and 14kHz. For material, I'm planning on using laser cutted MDF for the box and glass for the front panel, to give it a "pro" look. I may change it for acrylic in the end.  The tools I own right now are:  1x Arduino Uno R3, which I intend to use it for the prototype and tests. 1x Arduino Mini, I'd rather use this one instead of an non-writtable CI for final project, as I may want to change codes and add stuff to it later. 5x 10-Segment LED Bar 5x Lm3914 I'd like to get to know how to divide and convert the frequencies of the sound into graphic, tips about the code for arduino and material list and mounting guide for each segment... Thanks a lot, I'm sorry for the long text, but I could not figure out how to explain it in other way. And again, thanks!
