Originally Mod Squad was born out of the idea to use donated toys to create prosthetic arms because there is an over abundance of them in the US, they are fairly low cost, they provide a variety of materials, and children would enjoy the way they look as opposed to more industrial materials. However a big concern is their durability. Share your thoughts/findings/suggestions about using toys. Are there other existing materials that are easy to access and would be good to re-use but would also make something that a child would like?

Serious request... my Parrot (African Grey) loves music. I would like to buy/build 'Parrot-proof' musical 'instrument/s' device/s that he can play, perhaps triggered by either percussive impulses from his beak and/or his vocal range. This would help him remain stimulated when I am out. All genuine replies welcome... :) The closest thing available is this, but it isn't very versatile (only pre set sounds) + not very musical http://www.petsathome.com/shop/en/pets/bird-toys/jm-bird-babble-ball?pageSize=45&orderBy=1#

I am trying to find a toy that my brother had as a kid. What it is was a battery powered base that you put a spinning blade like object it was all made of plastic, on top of the blade was a plastic shield like object to hold the blade on, the two motor bases where connected together with string that came out the side of the robot and connected to a plastic anchor point of the other. When you turned on the two bases it caused the blades to spin and the tether lines slowly retracted causing the blades to come into contact which then knocked the shields and blades off each other. The person who still had their blade and or shield on at the end won. Does anyone know what these toys where called?

So, i opened up some of my old toys just out of curiosity, and i noted that there were some empty places for components such as capacitors. What would happen if i added a capacitor there and why do they lack them in the first place?

Disney had this line of single pictures viewmasters back in the day http://disneyatdisleelandiablog.blogspot.com/2011/11/disneylands-40th-anniversary.html My girlfriend is a huge fan of Lion King and I wanted to replace the picture inside with one of us. I was curious if anyone else had attempted a similar project and could offer advice. Thanks in advance

There are constant reports of high lead levels in many toys, as well as new findings that lead is an even more dangerous neurotoxin than previously believed. Does anyone have the chemical background to devise a simple home test for lead levels in toys? My thoughts are that a number of toys would be place in a bathtub, and a leeching agent would be added which would dissolve some of any lead present. The dilute solution in the tub would then be tested by a standard home water supply lead test. This could possibly be a great service... Thanks!

Hey Folks, i ordered this frog at dealextreme. com.Its called a "Digitally Recordable Motion Activated Visitor Welcoming Door Chime Frog". Originally it is a toy that says "Hello" when someone passes by. You can use your own sample, simply by pressing a button to record it to the frog. Nice toy for circuit bending i thought. Here's what i made today. I added loop, pitch control, input and output jack and a button to start the sample manually. Okay it has still a few bugs, but it works. Hope you enjoy the video:

Hey guys! This is my long awaited first forum topic on my first 2 k'nex creations that I've been wanting to get a topic posted about them for quite a while, but never booked in any free time to get one posted. So today, I've had nothing to do,so I decided to go ahead and post a topic. The guns themselves are quite explanatory. One comes from a traditional firing pin system that's been on the site for ages now. The other gun is also a pin gun, but also has a slingshot mechanism integrated into it. Basically, it's a pin gun that has the ability to be given an unlimited amount of increased power as well as the ability to control pin friction. I give special thanks to Fred the penguin for the original idea. Go look it up if don't know what I'm talking about. That was one concept I used, the other one is really awesome and comes from the mighty 182515. Basically it allows a gun(whatever gun it may be) to be broken down into as many parts as possible, while also allowing a front portion of the barrel to be removable and interchangeable. Both of my guns have this concept. Anyway, enough chit-chat, onto pro's and con's for these weapons: assault rifle- Pro's: -very powerful, breaks oodammo from about 40 or 50 ft, puts holes in drywall, and leaves some very nasty dents in steel doors with certain front ends. -very high range. I can easily shoot a finned tan rod 275 ft. with 3 strong unused #64's and with the tr-18 mounted on it. -extremely versatile. can have multiple uses. - trigger requires no rubber bands and blocks the pins progress every time. -reliable -Doesn't use many pieces, but it uses enough though. Con's: - Gun may be a little hard to fire due to the trigger setup. -uses broken parts. logic bow- Pro's: -extremely powerful. I shot and killed a possum with it using sharpened fin ammo and 20#64's and actually puts holes in steel doors. 'nuff said. -extremely high range. Shoots a finned black rod up to 600 ft. with a tr. And goes up to about 700 with the nar.(Only w/ latex surgical tubing or elastic bungee cord) -extremely versatile. Does the same thing as the rifle. -no pin friction due to the ratchet holding all of the pins bands. -very reliable. -unlimited power. -Like the rifle, the trigger mechanism now operates on no rubber bands. -Trigger guard Con's: - Piece consuming - A little heavy, but nothing too serious. -uses broken parts. Well, that about wraps it up. THESE WILL BE POSTED. I'm just not sure when yet. Below are some pictures for you to drool at. **UPDATE**: I have changed these guns up some after this was published. The rifle pretty much stayed the same, I only did most of the major changes to the logic bow. It now features: A trigger that requires no rubber bands, better body design, bow limb reinforcements, handle moved up to the middle of gun, sear system type trigger or trigger that blocks behind the handle and moves only in one direction, and all the other bells and whistles. I also attached generic/basic stock butts to both guns(lol, that joke is getting old XD). I will upload the new pictures in a few days. Check for updates from me often by the way. I think we're done here. **UPDATE** 10/25/12- I have uploaded the new pictures. The last picture is of a recycled steel can getting pwned by the logic bow. Enjoy. :)

In a few weeks my nephew will be 2 years old and I want to make a toy for him because I don't like the toys I see at stores. I'm thinking of something that doesn't involve complex electronics or digital displays because I want him to develop his imagination. It would be great if the toy had an educational purpose. Any ideas??

I'd like to develop a kids toy whereby a small motor is triggered by movement in the room. it should: fit inside a plant pot be battery operated use very little or no power when inactive cost less than £10 / $15 in parts Is this possible? Would anyone be willling to help me develop this toy? thanks. Julius (London, UK)

My son has one of those multi-pin impression toys where you press your hand on one side and the pins move and you see your hand impression on the pins on the other side. He loves it. I've seen some large ones at Childrens Museums but it seems like there needs to be an instructable on how to make your own, preferably a giant one. I've found some steel sheets online that would make good holders but couldn't come up with possible items for the 'pins'. What are your ideas? Mazelady

My Disney Store Buzz Lightyear's laser wires disconnected in the upper arm (both red and black) and one in the chest (black wire). The wires look too short on certain parts. Is it possible to make wires longer? I'm having trouble and I don't have a soldering iron. Is there an easy method for soldering without having to buy a soldering iron?

I was in Italy, and I saw a few street vendors selling these little paper figures in the form of Disney cartoon characters that would dance when music was played. They had little strings for legs, and they seemed to hover magically in the air and bounce around in time to the music. When the vendor turned down the volume, the little thing stopped dancing. I looked at the back of it, and all I saw was a little strip that looked magnetic. I am mystified. Does anyone what these things are called or how they work?
Question by jessejwk | last reply
I'm looking to make a gun, probably out of paper tubes, that would be able to use party poppers as ammunition. It needs to be able to pull the string of the popper, and preferably be easy to reload, as this would be used at some party-type thing. I was thinking along the lines of wrapping paper (cardboard) tubes, but i don't know how the mechanism would work to pull the string. I think the best type of weapon to relate to this would be the shotgun because of the shape of the ammo.

My Dog only likes to play fetch with Tin cans, but they sometimes cut his lips. Firstly, I was wondering if anyone had a Idea of how to cover the can with a rubber or plastic that could withstand the heavy play and bites of a large dog . Secondly, I want it to look cool so how would you make it two toned. I'm looking for this to last a while, thats why I want it to look cool. Its bad enough when I have to take Tin cans to the park. Also I'm not that experienced in plastics/Rubber. My skills are more inclined to carpentry. So please be specific. Thanks I hope someone can Help.

Oh how I cried when I realised that I would never catch a Pikachu. I should probably collect my used Pokeballs... Anyway, I was out in the woods looking for wild Pokemon, when I had a eurika moment, (I had actualy fallen down a rabbite hole full of moss), for some strange reason I thought of those auto pumping whoppie cushions (probably the spongy moss) and then realised: If I could create a fabric Pikachu or buy an inflatable , I could fill it with foam then scrunch it up as small as possible, and put it inside a Pokeball! I think it might work, so I'll give it a try!

I like how this particular model retracts all the way into the hilt, but the blade is very short, and in conjunction with my stature it seems even shorter. Holding the toy up to the light I can see that there is a lot of plastic that is behind the other pieces. Is there a way to utilize this and make the blade longer?

I found this adorable rubber dragon in the bargain bin of my local toystore and would like to paint it to give it a costumized look. Unfortunately the toy is made from a material i'm not to familiar with. it's very stretch and it seems to me like it is made from supple rubber. It's sort of reminds me of a dog toy. so now I'm trying to find out what type of paint I can and can't use as I don't want it to start flaking. I'don't mind if the toy becomes stiff. I'd will be more of a display item anyway. Could I use spray paint? should I prime it? should i strip the current paint, and which solvent would be best that wouldn' destroy the toy. Any help will be very much appreciated.

Mostly for circuit bent music - I've got toy guitars like the One Man Jam, Tyco Hot Lixx, Tyco Hot Keys, etc. and mini casio and yamaha keyboards with new knobs and switches sticking all over the place. I'm afraid that some of the plastic parts may be broken (plastic whammy bars, knobs, etc.) may be broken if I just chuck them in a cardboard box or gig bag, but I don't have lots of money for a fleet of custom ATA road cases.

Okay everyone, I have been trying to remember what these toys were called for the last couple of years. They were in the 80's or 90's and could change from a vehicle into a base/battle station. I know I had a few of them. The two that I remember are a tank that changed into a large base and a three-wheeled vehicle that changed into a gun turret thing (if memory serves me correctly). There was normally a switch or button to press and you would hear a loud gear/spring noise when they changed. I know it was not a Transformer or GI Joe toy. They had small scaled human figures that were tan in color and a little larger than the figures that came with Technozoids (if anyone remembers those). The figures were in the same "seated position" (for lack of a better way to describe it) as the Technozoid ones. As I said in the title, there will be a 1 year pro membership to whoever figures this out first!
