I swat flies with my hand and NEVER MISS. Use a paper towel UNDER your hand and the fly won’t have room to escape. Also a facial tissue or face towel can be used. Here's a Youtube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwiDxZd-70I

I caught
many using a small pickle jar, in which I put 1 inch of apple cider vinegar
and a few drops of dish-washing liquid. But i tried this lately and works better for me http://bit.ly/1Gy10TX

I find the best bait for the common housefly (Musca domestica) is rotting meat or carrion, like a dead mouse. Sweet sugary things like honey, jam etc only tend to attract fruit flies and wasps.

ahh yea, It is missing a small step. You must pierce the cap of the bottle a little. A small drill bit about the size of pea or just smaller would be good.

this is a little confusing, if u turned the bottle top upside down and tape it closed, how does the fly get in? Did u cut a hole in the cap or something? Am I wrong or is there a step missing here?

I have a question. What if you mix eveything for bees, wasp and flys. It will be like a bug ore gi. My idea is mix honey, oranges, milk and pheromone will it work? I will give it a try and get back to everyone. If i can get one of each imagine the possiblities.

Just use a 2 liter bottle. Cut the top off, the flip it and insert it into the bottom. No tape needed.

We had a batch of flies hatch and were overrun with them throughout the entire house one morning... yuck. I went looking for a fly strip recipe and came upon this. I knew about it but had forgotten it. My cousin had one set out and it got so full... she never dumped it...again yuck. I made some of these and hung them with string on all the windows where they like to congregate... like someone said they 'go toward the light' :) I use anything sweet like flavored coffee syrup, chocolate syrup, honey, beer. The clearer liquids let you see them drowning better... am I cruel or what? :) I don't know if they get back out because I don't sit there and watch them, but it does clear them out of the house without having to play the game of 'swat the flies'. Actually it is great aerobic exercise if you do it really fast... gets me into a sweat really fast :) That's the up side of it.

does this catch bigger flies or just fruit flies?

Are you sure it cannot come out mate? I'm wondering

As others have mentioned, YES, the flies CAN fly out the opening at the bottom of the "funnel" in the center of the bottle, BUT... IT IS HIGHLY UNLIKElY due to the fact that flies fly "to the light" and thus to the outside walls of the bottle, and do not "FIND" the relatively small opening in the center of the bottle. Again, they "can" fly out, but more than 90% of the time they DO NOT find the ouly opening, and ths, DO NOT fly out of the bottle.
