Thanks! I love using old comics and such as well, but I never seem to have enough paper for those weirdly shaped or large things. I've been carrying around this busted music book for four years (I have a materials collection problem) so I was super excited to think of a way to use it AND solve my weird/large gift conundrum. I hope it's helpful for you too!

Thanks! I felt pretty smart after I did this. I've already used it to wrap a few gifts and it works perfectly. I finally have a use for all of those torn out atlas pages I've been carrying around for decades!

Hi! I don't have any written up instructions on how to project, but to do so you'd need to put the phone inside the box and lean it up against the vellum screen (or a piece of similarly sized cardboard...something sturdier might be better) with whatever image you want facing forward toward the lens. You'll need to lock the screen orientation and make sure your image is upside down on the screen (it will project right side up). Then, and this is the trick part, you'll need to find the focal length for the lens you're using. I recommend leaving the phone/vellum screen toward the back of the box and moving the whole thing closer and farther from the wall rather than trying to adjust the phone. Make sure the room you're projecting in is REALLY DARK and your phone brightness is at maximum. Hav…

Hi there! So sorry to take so long to reply. You want the name of the constellation on the coast on the file? Or you want someone to make a set for you? I can help you out with the first one and upload another file that has the constellation names on the coaster itself rather than below, but unfortunately I no longer have access to a laser cutter (pandemic and all that) so couldn't engrave them for you. Let me know if you need the file, I'd be happy to oblige.

Hi! I made the pattern myself using images I found online and illustrator. I'm not sure how your cutter works, but if you don't want the loops to fall through you could change them to be raster rather than vector lines. I hope that helps, if not let me know and I'll try again. :)

Hi! Totally not a silly question. When I'm laser cutting I buy from Inventables here: https://www.inventables.com/technologies/baltic-birch-plywood--2. I hope that helps!

Always happy to help a fellow maker! Your project is super cool by the way. Edge light acrylic is really cool for this kind of thing as well!

Whoops! And here I thought I was being helpful. Sorry! Maybe one day soon you can get a glowforge!
View Instructable »There are several makerspaces/hackerspaces/fab labs in Maine. I'm sure one of them has a laser cutter! I found my first Makerspace on Meetup and they do regular open Make activities to teach people new tools. Worth checking out if you have the time. In addition to the two links in the intro there's also this list of directories for hackerspaces and makerspaces. I hope you're able to find something that works for you!

If you're using/have access to Adobe Illustrator you can take a black and white image and live paint/live trace and turn it into an engravable image.

An atlas costume would be so cool though...I feel like you could combine this paper sewing with your costume dream. There's potential here...
