    Excellent, excellent, excellent!!Well written, and (even if not necessarily what people were wanting to hear) truthful, and informative.We all have our vices, and eating whatever you want, whenever you want has got to be one of the most common. Something I didn't hear is that after maintains for some period of time (years probably, I'm sad to say, after years of indulgence) it become easy, and you learn how to get rewards without constant overdoing the wrong stuff. It can even be with great food, in limited quantities. A dinner at a great restaurant is perfectly fine once in a while.The exercise component is really important. There are way too many people in this country that get almost none. Walking is very good, but something a bit more cardio intensive occasionally should be inc...

    This is good... Covers the basic necessities, but after doing some (a lot?) you find that getting the heat correct, as goldilocks said 'not too hoo, not too cold' is the key to it all. There's a lot to be said here... Direction of flame,different torches,rising heat (and yes large thermal masses, like a vice absorbing a lot of heat, etc.) but mostly you learn all that stuff with the flame burning, and the solder flowing (or not as the case may be). Flux is needed when at the lower temps.As a plumber, I always cleaned everything with sandcloth, then applied flux. Both remove oxides, which interferes w/ good solder flow, the flux removes it chemically instead of mechanically. Later, with refrigeration and high silver contents, the heat is high enough to drive off the oxides so the flu...

    Many outdoor lamps are metal halide, mercury vapor, low pressure sodium, etc., because they throw a lot of light with less power (still several hundred watts). They also need time to 'warm up' and fire to the on state from a very wimpy glow. We had a parking garage that presented a problem after a power failure because it went black for 30 to 45 (60?) seconds before the lights were back to burning bright. The time delay depends on the individual lamp... Age & condition.It's a good idea, but there is a lot to think about. On a freeway, you would want a light a half mile ahead to light the road, but if pedestrians might use the area, they would need to stay on, or at least sense differently. Freeways may have enough traffic to render them only semi used. Also, costs are high for ...

Freeways may have enough traffic to render them only semi used. Also, costs are high for 'control boards' supplied to maintenance people by wholesalers, and it introduces another way for the lighting to 'fail', and may keep a long stretch of road completely dark while it is out of service. Not insurmountable, but needs to be thought about... Should fail to an 'on' state if possible.

The centripetal force is required to 'bring it into' a circle instead of moving in a straight line at the velocity it is instantaneous traveling (tangentially).It's the force that gravity provides to orbiting bodies around a planet, be they spaceships or a moon. In the case of the above instructable the rope (and hanger) provides it.

    Humidity IS the key. I'm in New Mexico (USA) and swamp coolers work great because our relative humidity is usually less than 20%, but the just don't work with 65 or 70% humidity like The east coast or the south. The water won't evaporate (much) which is where the cooling comes from, just as sweating cools down your body. (Melting ice will, of course cool things down).Also, adding your evaporated water to a closed room raises the humidity, so the longer it runs, the less it cools. Our coolers are mounted outside and use all outside (dry) air as intake, and blow the cool, humidified air into the house. A 20 degree Fahrenheit drop in temperature (or so) is about all you can get out of them. The motors/fans do live in that high humidity, but do fairly well over time, but they do g...

    I agree with your concerns here completely!... But, I think the reason is this:Electrical installations (pre-existing ones) that are altered by amateurs are usually pretty well protected by a breaker or two on the way back to the mains, so any stupidity it encounters is safely dealt with. (this I a generalization, depending on the age of the installation and whether or not it was done correctly).A plumbing system doesn't have 'circuit breakers', but uncontrolled water flow can get mighty expensive to cope with, even if not immediately deadly, and more than one home plumber has seen this occur.I really caution anyone that isn't very (VERY) comfortable with both electrical theory, and both the National Electrical Code, and the local codes to get a local professional to at least (!) look...

    The problem is that in dry air these work great, and you can generally get a 20 degree (or more even) drop in temperature on the air in vs. air out AS LONG AS the humidity of the input air is low (preferably less than 30% - the lower the better). But, guess what?... The air coming out of your unit (which just evaporated the water to cool down) is high humidity air. It doesn't take too long to raise the humidity in a room to 50% or 60%, and if you live in the muggy south or east coast, just forget about it. It won't work at all, since your air starts at 60% or more.I live in New Mexico (our humidity measured 3% a few days ago!) where they work great!, but we don't use them 'inside' the house. They sit on the roof, drawing in dry air, which is cooled and humidified as it flows through ...

It seldom breaks 100 degrees here in Albuquerqe (at 5000+ ft.) so they work quite well. They are much cheaper to operate than refrigerated air.They are great units, but you need to understand how an why they work and apply them correctly.

The base problem is the number of people producing waste, and the fact that we developed from a point where it sort of 'disappeared' without thinking about it, hence the designs were not concerned with it. When John Krapper built his original water closet, it solved some serious sanitation/infection control problems, but it used the drinking water Tecwyn refers to. Now the drinking water is becoming too scarce to treat as waste (due to high population & lack of foresight) and the population is still growing (and will be for 50 or more years).We may well engineer our way out of it, but it may be kind of a mess before we get it under control.
