Very beautiful and great instructions. I thought I was the only person under 90 years of age who did this. When I talk about tatting people look for my body art. Thank you you for showing this.
If you enlarge the pictures you can see where I add the end of the needle that came off the tree to the last 1/4 of the needles on the basket to work in new needles. This way there is a smoother transition. Using different colors of needles gives more design to the basket. I used all one color so this is a basic, basic, basic example. Also using long needles is much easier.
No. These needles were very dry. As you pick the needles you can check for sap (or in my case spiders, leaves and dirt). Any sap can be removed with alcohol or if you want water proofing leave it in. It is mess to work with though.
The sky is the limit. Very large baskets can be made and be very strong because you sew each set of needles separately so they build on each other.

I have been told that the allergens are in the saliva of the cat so when it licks itself those allergens are transferred to the fur. I also was told if you wash the cat and dry it, then use the fur the allergens are removed. After you are released from the hospital and are healed let us know how this worked out. But seriously, if you are allergic it might not be a good idea to "tempt fate" and have a reaction that might be a bad one.

How to Write an Instructable
Needle breakage is a big problem. I used Schmetz Universal needles for Jeans/Denim and also Topstitching needles. Needles were my biggest expense and occurred when I expected the sewing machine to stitch too thick of layers or if I hit metal with the needle.
