Out of curiosity what’s the weather like generally where you’re at? I’d like to make something similar but I’m concerned how a brass tube would hold up to prolonged extreme summers. Do you think it would start to warp in 100+F days?

I can't wait to see it when you're done. Yeah, the D-ring holders on the sides were very difficult. I had to remake them several times and wasted a lot of material before I got something I was happy with. The copper rivets do sound cool.So for the backpack straps, since mine are part of the convertible strap system I have the 6" neck pad in the middle. But if you are just going from the top of the bag to the strap buckle I didn't take any measurements before. I just made the bottom straps with the holes really long to begin with. I dyed, punched, and finished the straps probably a foot longer than i needed. Next I put on my largest coat (a big wintery one) and buckled the finished straps into the bottom of the bag. I put the "finished" bag on and tightened the strap…

Those are approximately 14" long. There was no rhyme or reason to that length. I attached them to the bottom first and trimmed them back a little once they went under the front straps.

The nice thing about the cup magnets is that most of the magnetic field is focused in one direction. When this is stored in my laptop bag i keep it pointed away from the computer. Even if the magnets were right up against my computer I wouldn't worry unless the hard drive was spinning as most of the damage would probably come from warping the small metal do-dads inside and possibly scratching the disk.

I can't wait to see pictures! The handle pieces are about 32" in length from end to end and they are 1.5" wide except for the bulge where it is 2.0". This extra was for the fold and sewing to make a more rigid handle. My advice would be to test assemble it a few times. Since I pre-punched my holes I just put a few stitches in to hold it all in place so I could test fit the handles which is how I found out they were going to be too long. But if you are going to sew it with a stitching awl you could use masking tape to hold it together for some measurements.
- Nick70587 commented on Nick70587's instructable Adventure Bag!
When i'm just using the handle/roll i detach the strap altogether and put it inside. The two handles over the top are all that gets wrapped up in that roll.
Yes, that's correct.
View Instructable »No worries. This was the most challenging for me too. I really wanted it to look nice. Unfortunately like most things I make I don't start or finish with a written plan so I never end up with a reusable template. I'm working on that character flaw with each project.

When its in backpack mode the padded sections on mine are 14" for the shoulder sections and 8" for that center piece. There is an additional 8" of the un-padded strap that connects to bottom D-rings on each side. So overall in this configuration the strap is about 52". I made the unpadded strap section so long because I wanted it to be long enough to work even if I were wearing a thick coat. Also I'm a little on the heavy side too. This does make the strap quite long when its in the shoulder-bag configuration so I have to adjust it to its shortest position when using it this way. The unpadded strap section only extends about 2" when adjusted like this so the whole shoulder strap is only about 40" in shoulder-bag mode.
The buckle straps are 1" wide, the handle straps are 1.5" wide and the padded shoulder straps are 2" wide. Hope that helps.

The last step briefly mentions it, but all it consists of is a pre-made steel bracket from Amazon. The legs are 4 x 4 and the header is a 4 x 6. The other end is bolted to the main structure.

Thank you. I appreciate the comment about the level of documentation. I worry that the process is not clear enough since that is exactly what I find helpful about other instructables that I read. I'd like to be able to take video some times but I'm just not that sophisticated. Maybe my kids can help with that.
Thank you! I was able to get a good portion of the green off but the brown dye stuck around for more than a week even after trying everything I had in the house to get it off.

I used to work at a stainless shop where in the showroom we had things like a 10' cheese grater (the big cowbell shaped kind), a 6' egg whisk, and a 7' spatula. They were all solid stainless steel polished up nice. This has them beat hands down. You of course need to make the accompanying phillips now.

No particular reason other than its what the inspiration piece was made of. There may be a little more durability with the plastic...we'll see. I would like to make a fancy hardwood version with brass fittings.

The magnets have a hole in the middle that fits a #10-24 machine screw. The screw is connected into the tee-nut which was inserted into the plastic.
- Nick70587 commented on Nick70587's instructable Magnetic Laptop Mount
Yes, it is intended for vertical surfaces. I stick it to Air Handlers on the roof more than anything. I stuck it to a steel door in a building the other day and scratched the paint so I won't do that anymore. I tried adding a thin piece of felt to the magnets but even that small gap drastically reduced the effectiveness of the magnets. It still held, but I was less confident every time i started typing.
View Instructable »Agreed. Both on the minimal danger to my data and the banging around the laptop. Our technician's laptops have about a two year shelf life due to the environment which is a benefit of this device. It helps keep me from having to set the laptop down on dirty, wet surfaces, or worse...the ground.

They are cup magnets so the strongest part of the magnetic field is directed away from the computer. When its in my bag, i just make sure the magnets face away from my computer.

While working on this I tried making it out of acrylic sheets but I just didn't have the experience or ability to do it. I think with some 1/4" to 1/2" acrylic sheets you may be able to make a hollow one but I just don't have the know-how for it. I also found some similarly shaped decanters for sale if that might help.

I would expect a professional to charge $300 - $400. The leather is not that expensive but i'd figure $25/hr for about 10 hours work or so. I haven't been able to do much leather work lately due to my real job otherwise I would offer to work something out with you.
