Why do you use 2 stepper motors for this axis and not just one with a longer shaft to drive both gears, or an I missing something?

Nice plan! The UV protection should be good then and you can prevent leaks 😀

This is genius! Simplicity squared. How many times did I have to do the mark, measure, mark, measure process just to mess it up along the way in any case?

If you have an idea to puzzle a non flat item, i am willing to test it out for you and can then share advice on how to do it for other entities. Mixing different colours into the builds can further create great creative opportunities..

I used NX to do exactly that since I have access to it at work. NX can work on STL geometry as if it is native geometry (it then calls it convergent bodies). I often use it to fix defects from STL files I find on the web to print. It's just a pity that NX is probably the most expensive CAD tool available - and don't even think of finding a cracked version - SIEMENS trace those and then find and sue the users for the full value of the software.I am not aware of any other products than can work on STL files like that.

Awesome thanks, especially how to dispose of the chemicals. Very responsible.

I had the same -127 error and tried all the suggestions posted here but in the end it was my signal wire that was not connected to the arduino (I used a development board pin which I though was connected. My suggestion: test all wires with a mulitmeter for connectivity from the sensor to the arduino pins.

Wow! Only a woodworker can have so much dedication and will power. Would have loved to see it in real life. Looking forward to the dining table!

Wow, great idea and very well executed. I didn't notice the pattern until you mentioned it and then realised how well it frames the shelves, why it made me look into this project in the first place

This is so awesome! I started with the same idea in mind but yours are Soooo much better, I will have to re think my plan. You talk a lot in your video about running out of time...so you had some deadline. I suggest a modular approach where the dashboard can simply by added to, so instead of starting with the end in mind, finish each section one at a time. That way it can get bigger and bigger over time. Your kids and grand kids will always think your the coolest! I bet no ToysRus product will ever get more love and attention than your space ship. I could only dream as a kid of such a cool dash.

I now found many projects how to make a simple projector using a light and magnifying glass. You can use the image of a phone or tablet too but that is very dim. I think the option to print or draw on transparency and then project it with a light source will be the simplest of you don't have a data projector.

This is a great project that I would like to pursue. What would the next steps be to make it possible to trace the lines of an SVG file? I want to trace the outline of something like this http://theultralinx.com/2015/07/20-awesome-optical-illusions-typography/ with the laser from a certain position and then mark the trace on the walls to paint (fill in) after I am done. The laser don't need to move fast (just as fast as I can follow) but it would need to be quite smooth for curved lines. How would one do that?

This is really awesome and I love the whole projector topic and now also had to go find your country on a map (I am from South Africa and before Nelson Mandela, also no one new where "South" "Africa" was :-)

I want to do this too but I assume you have to spend a lot of time moving your tape around while monitoring the end result on the phone. For a quicker and more precise way, when a projector is not at hand or not practical, isn't there some cool way to build a quick moving pen laser which "paints" the outlines for you to paint on? It would offcourse be much more work than using a projector but it allows for much greater distances to be covered (where a projector light will be too dim).

I am worried about the life expectancy of the panel since I've seen that those sign boards don't last long outside in the sun (it is afterall made as cheap and light as possible and not made to last). Wouldn't the inner bits of plastic break down quickly as well? I suppose the paint coating should help that the UV don't break it down, from outside at least. I have a can of heat resistant black paint in the garage left and was wondering if that would be even better than normal paint?
Another simple and accurate force measure is to pour water in a hanging bottle or bucket and then measuring it's weight with a kitchen scale or the volume with a beaker. 1L = 1kg = 9.81N
