Thanks for the info, I would imagine my sister (PhD Biology) picked up on this and was far too polite to tell her brother (industrial engineer)!

Hi, thanks for looking at my instructable. I found the depth varies greatly depending on the size and type of metal. If you spend some time tuning it it detects aluminium up to about 400mm in air. It varies a great deal in sand or soil. I’m going to replace the ne555 timers with cmos versions as they are meant to be more stable and you can tune the detector to have a better signal to noise ratio

Thanks for the comment I will correct this ASAP.
View Instructable »I agree with you about BASIC, I made a Colour Maximitte kit computer that is a 32bit machine running MMBASIC. It is a really good version of BASIC and I've written games for it in BASIC, with decent graphics, and it is smooth and fast.

I made this on a Saturday afternoon with my 9 year old Son, took about 2-3 hours and we built it on perf board. It works very well indeed. Thanks for posting.

Great project I've leaned loads from this! I'm building an electric kart for my kids and blogging on it as I go. I'll get an instructable together when I'm done. http://iceni-design.co.uk/electric-go-kart-blog.ht...
Nice build!
