:-)The smoke allarm was probably because they almost burn there way in - especially when worn.Btw. See also: shown a homemade 'tubular cutter' ;-)
Cork borer set, (what I would try) https://www.amazon.com/Cork-Borer-Nickel-Plated-Br...I can't find a picture of the industrial 'hole punch' for paper, though I have used one ...
Drilling holes in paper may be better with a tubular cutter, simalar to one for making holes in corks. That is what machines for making holes in a ream of paper use...
Video of a machin similar in concept to what I have used.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UtBE3N34Qc4
A double check of the assembly instructions suggests that the linked kit is tuned by resistor. ( RV2 Step12)https://www.velleman.eu/downloads/0/minikits/manuals/manual_mk118.pdf
Maybe one of the Vellerman FM radio kits could be used, which might mitigate some of your 'lessons learned' challrnges.https://www.velleman.eu/products/view/?id=348222
10 or more years ago I had an earlier version of this Vellerman kit which was tuned with a Varicap,& variable resistor, I had changed the multi turn resistor for a slide - linea - variable. If one could get a similar version, then the variable resistor could be changed for fixed ( possibly switchable) resistors
I am very concerned that the orange precipitate is a chrome salt (from the stainless wire) if it was a copper salt I would expect green or blue colour.chromes salts are hidiously poisonous, and long term pollutants. Please use another material for your negative electrode - Iron, (steel) copper or carbon for example.
Amazing!Really clever idea, (and exicution)
