    I imagine that 20,000 years ago humans frequently fasted for 2-10 days at a time between killing animals for food (agriculture started about 10,000 years ago).For your body to truly switch into ketosis mode (where it starts digesting your own fat), it takes 2-3 days of continuous fasting. This crazy idea that you can fast for 2/3rds of a day and eat for 1/3rds of a day is just ... bunk. Dr. Mark Fuhrmann has some great books on how to get your body into Ketosis. He's an USA ex-olympian (Skating) who solved some of his medical problems by using a prolonged fast.
