Hi rizzocow,Thank you so very much, I'm glad you enjoyed it!Regarding the battery, I chose the LiPo architecture to avoid the safety circuitry as some times the Li-Ion protection circuitry will shut down the battery under quick / high current pulses. The LiPo battery I used is rated at 50C which allows it to delivery a much higher current short pulse than the battery is rated. The problem with using a LiPo battery is low voltage concerns. If you decide to try the battery you chose, please let me know your results! Thanks again!Greg
Thanks paulsfo!I believe that would be possible, quite an interesting thought!Greg

View Instructable »Hi Kdemon,Thank you very much, I'm glad you enjoyed it!I sold my company and retired 16 years ago (primarily to assist in taking care of my father suffering from advanced dementia). During my working years of designing flight control systems and software for aircraft (commercial, corporate and military) I had the wonderful opportunity to work with mechanical engineers and machinists who amazed me with their skills in designing and machining the gears, linkages, etc. required to deflect the flight control surfaces. So basically I learned by observation (such as in the conceptual models from Arglin Kampling [Third Gen] and thang010146 of a mechanical pick and place system I had seen years ago), asking questions, and making a lot of mistakes!Greg

Yes, the grandkids love drawing various tracks and trying them out! They draw them in different colors and add scenery.Greg

Hi wannabemadsci,You are very welcome, and thank you so much for your kind words! With the counter rotating front wheels, it will traverse the circle in either direction or follow a straight line. The area in which I video tape my models is quite small, thus the small circular track which, I might add, I was surprised the model would continuously follow! Thanks again, and you're welcome!Greg

View Instructable »Hi GustavoV43,I retired at the age of 50 after selling my company. Over the years I designed 37 video games for Tandy, Electronic Arts, Activision, and countless others, along with using my graphics engine in flight control systems for numerous commercial, corporate and military applications. All during that time I worked with mechanical engineers and machinists and truly admired their skills. This model, and most of my other designs, is a result of my admiration of their work and appreciation for how truly difficult it is.Thank you very much!Greg

Hi L.D.T.,You're welcome! I believe this profile showed up in the 4.0 release of Ultimaker Cura, and it has remained ever since. I do use it almost exclusively as the accuracy of the parts is quite high.Greg

Hi Again Goepez,No, I have not. The simple method would be to place wires on a non-conductive track connected to a coil and power supply. The wires should be positioned at a location that will push the magnetic ball away from the coil.Hope this helps!Greg
- gzumwalt commented on gzumwalt's instructable Marblevator, Perpetual?
Hi LeftPawn,The motors I'm using are the same ones I used in my wifi propeller boat model and are rated at 25,000 rpm at 12vdc. I'm running the motor in this model at 3vdc.Greg
View Instructable »Hi goepez,Yes, this mechanism uses magnetic ball and coils to accelerate the ball. There are a couple of control mechanisms I have seen for this; one being simple wire contacts at strategic points on the track, and another being magnetic sensors. Either way energizes the coils at the precise moment to accelerate the ball.Greg

Hi Art,Thank you very much, I'm glad you enjoyed it!At an average current draw of 50ma, the 800ma battery should run 16 hours before requiring a charge. However, being a LiPo with no low voltage protection, I charge mine after 8 hours using a LiPo balance charger available at hobby stores and online.Greg
