Have you tried to program it "in circuit" rather than using the ZIF socket?
I had exactly the same problem. Found that I had the IC in the programming socket wrong. I was off by one row. Check the attached picture carefully. Good luck!

Had a lot of fun with my first Hackerbox. I was curious what RPM gave the best "picture" of the graphics. So, I mounted the spinner on an Arduino speed controlled computer fan and measured the RPM using a laser, photocell, Arduino and some code. I thought the best "picture" of the I Love You graphic occurred at about 850 RPM. Anybody have an idea what the graphic is on picture #3?
