I don't generally calculate, for midrange cabs usually 1 1/2 yards is enough. More tends to get work hardened and unless it's a very small stone, or you're making very large loops, less than 1 yard is pushing it. Experiment with cheap wire and see what works for you.
Depends what you like. Something silvery would be more discreet where you'd see the wire in the back through the translucent stone, but copper would make a more dramatic contrast if you want to show off the netting.

Yay! It looks like a great shape for this style, hope she enjoys it :)
Wow, that's pretty awesome, did you do wrapped loops for the chain?
Go for it, let me know how it works, I've never worked with stainless steel.
Those are awesome, first time I've had the urge to work with concrete!

Absolutely, I wanted to keep the daguerreotype look (despite the fact that it takes me several tries to get the word spelled right!) You could also decoupage 4 different ones over a square glass candle holder and rotate sides.
Go for it! You could also size it up and put it in a proper frame at that point.

The fact that it's a ring that doesn't close, just bend the ends to curve against one another, so if you make an approximate size, it will gap to fit over swollen knuckles and open a little more if you slide it on a larger finger than you originally made it for.
Thank you :)

Awesome, let me know if you give it a shot! But beware wire wrapping can really start eating up your time and funds. Though you can fudge all three of my current projects a little, one spool of 20 ga and one spool of 26 ga isn't ideal, but as a let's try and not invest too much would work for all :)

Love it! I think I have some scrap from my old class, maybe I can scrounge the materials for this. It's very much less minimalist than yours, but I kind of want to hybridize this with my spiral-y prong wire wrap now.
Setting a Stone With Cold Connections
Generally internet and gem shows, look around to see if your local mineral societies have shows. But periodically check out Michaels, I know some of my students got chips at theirs. You might need to enlarge the frame a bit to fit the larger chips, but they got it to work :)
You're absolutely right, I love working with fossils!
Please don't do an exact copy. I'm sure you understand as a jewelry seller, since I do sell these, including some as charity fundraisers. Please this as a bouncing off point and do some tweaks to make it more your own first. (Especially since I do my own fantasy inspired trees!)
They're hard when you're trying to figure it out on your own, which is probably why there are so many great variations. I have a friend who makes the tree first and then adds stones, then attaches to the frame. We tried each other's ways and it didn't go so well!
They look great, nice color choices too!
