    How to Buy an Ex-Ambulance

As a former fireman/EMT and Fire service mechanic, I can tell you that buying an ambulance for business or pleasure is an excellent investment. Until recently they were required to be built to excellent standards. Such as sustain a 5g roll with out flying apart internally, able to have 3 fully equipped units stacked one on top of the other, strong electrical standards and of course the best Blood Born Pathogen standards. Now that NFPA has taken over the standards, NFPA 1917, the standards are getting tougher. In buying a used ambulance, mileage is actually nothing and everything. The patient compartment or box was made to be removed from one cab and chassis and installed upon a new one . If you retain the unit as is then look for low miles. Take it to a certified mechanic and be sure to get the maintenance records from Day One. The body of the ambulances come in different lengths, 10' to 16'. Longer is better. Diesel engines are better. The transmission is the weak point of most vehicles regardless the brand. Look at the radiator and coolant. Healthy coolant typically shows a good cared for engine. I would stay away from ambulances with kneelers, and 4x4. Also freeway rigs. RECOMMENDED AFTER PURCHASE, REPLACE THE FLOOR IN THE BOX AND WALL PANELS. These are fairly easy to replace, the floor being 1" marine plywood and the panels are available at the manufacturer. The new materials are going to have the newest BBP resistant covering.
