M.J.J.,That was actually my intention when building this (to add a board with hinges to create and open and close bench) but somehow the wood piece got cut to the wrong size at Home Depot so that is a project for another day :)I think it would be sturdy enough to sit and put shoes on. Just make sure you have a thick enough wood board so it doesn’t dip or bend when you sit on it.Thanks!Claire
