I've made these, about a year ago, and to answer the question that doesn't seem to be quite answered in this thread: They are incredibly stiff and crack wherever they bend. They do NOT hold up through bending. But they are way cool....

Nicely done! One option that might save you time and ensure perfect alignment is to apply the design before laser cutting. If you are worried about charring (more likely with 1/4" than 1/8"), you can then apply low tack transfer tape and remove the transfer tape afterwards or apply a light coat of clear gloss sealer and then mild charring wipes away. You may want to apply sealer anyway so your gorgeous images don't get damaged over time.

As a friendly note, if you put blue painters tape on your wood before you engrave over it (so you are engraving right on and through the tape into the woods) you can then remove the tape at the end and not have the stray smoke be a problem. But, you do have to then remove the tape (first peel, then try a credit card for any remaining bits).

This is gorgeous! I had hoped to do something similar with flooring. Question - is there a reason to black the frame after putting it on rather than before (when there would be no fear of getting the ink on the planking that you so carefully masked out)? I'm nervous about not being as careful as you.
