Standard solid 4 conductor 22 to 20 awg phone wire should be fine. I used that in my house with no issues. Each end has a on board regulator so you can supply 9 to 12V at one point in the system as as long as the voltage at the far end is greater than ~7V the regulator will take it down to 5V with no issues.
Would say this takes intermediate skill as soldering wires to small pads are involved. Yes there is a good risk of breaking things if you try and force something. In our case it was already broken so we had nothing to lose. Lucked out and was a simple fix and had a working laser when we were done.
